Beautiful weekend with lots of hugs from grandkids, Emmett who is now two and his baby brother, Wyatt who is four months. Thank you, Shane and Delena for the baby fix. It was wonderful. Well, Mother Nature was pretty nice to us for a few days but topped off the weekend with a nice deluge of 1.3 inches of rain and wind, according to our weather station. Everything smells so nice with all the flowers blooming and trees budding out. The birds are picking up the dog hair off our lawn that we brush from the dogs. They actually fight each other in the air for the soft tufts. Fun to watch. News from Naselle: Members of the Naselle Marimba Band spent part of their spring break at a world famous venue and did a mighty fine job of entertaining many while they were at Disneyland. This talented group is to be commended for their efforts in giving so much pleasure to those who hear them. It is pretty obvious when one sees and hears them that they are playing from the heart. Welcome to what really appears to be Spring. I have finally seen my first trilliums and a few of the other small wildflowers beginning to bloom. We’ve had just about everything imaginable this week, weather-wise. Lake Fred (our hayfield) is up, with ice around the edge and snow covering the rest of the field. The ducks are swimming around like it’s a normal routine for them. The smelt must be coming in to the Grays River just west of Duffy’s Tavern, as I have counted as many as 22 bald eagles in the trees overlooking the river. Just got an update from Derek Heitsch on his springtime news. He now has 23 new calves and two sets of twins. All are doing well. More to come though. Students will attend classes on February 28 and March 1, and be out of school on March 2. I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. She may have had to travel some distance to make it back home as she was quite emaciated, but is recovering nicely. I love to tell happy stories. Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. It looks like more is on the way, so guess I’d better do a little stocking up. My husband and I watched our dogs run down the hill from the house on Sunday and followed to see what they were after. We had a wonderful surprise visit from our daughter and son-in-law when they showed up on Saturday. I spent last Thursday afternoon at the birthing center in Astoria, and at 7:05 p.m., we welcomed our 11th grandchild, 8 pound 8 ounce Wyatt Lee Cruz to the world. He was 22 inches long. It didn’t look good for our trip to Oregon last week when we got up on Wednesday morning. Lake Fred (our hay field) had raised its ugly head and the driveway was flooded. Well, the temperatures have shown us that winter is just about here, along with the high winds last week and snow over the weekend. Our walnut tree still had all of its leaves on Saturday, but after the freeze Saturday night and the wind, it was completely bare of leaves by Sunday afternoon.
