  • Columnist had busy Christmas week

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 3, 2013

My apologies to the readers for not having a column in last week. Thank you to those who called to see if everything was okay with us. We are fine, but it was a very busy time for me, so unfortunately I didn’t get a column written. I hope everyone had as wonderful Christmas and New Year celebration as we did. Our daughter and son-in-law from Redmond, Oregon, our son from Ellensburg, our son, his wife and two grandsons from Cathlamet, our grandson from Eugene and my sister joined us for Christmas Eve dinner and enjoyed a little family time a...

  • Christmas is coming; best wishes to all

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 20, 2012

It’s nearly Christmas and Mother Nature is doing her best to give us a white one. We have seen a little of everything in the last few days, from sunshine to hail to snow and as usual, lots of rain with some wind thrown in. Now the weatherman is calling for more low elevation snow, KM Mountain has already claimed a few fender benders, I’m told. Here’s hoping you are all ready for the big guy in the red suit to make his visit to your house. It looks like we will welcome some of our kids for Christmas Eve dinner for the first time since our house...

  • Movie night, bazaar, Tour of Homes ahead

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

I hope everyone had as wonderful a Thanksgiving as we did. This year was the first time I cooked the Thanksgiving meal for several years. We enjoyed the company of my uncle, David Hammonds, my sister, Diane Gray and our son, Shane Cruz, his wife Delena and their two beautiful sons, Emmett and Wyatt. It was a quiet day, but we have so much to be thankful for and enjoyed the day thoroughly, even though we all ate too much. News from Naselle: Sports scheduled for the Naselle teams for the coming week include: junior varsity boys basketball at...

  • Bazaars, home tours on holiday schedule

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 22, 2012

Well, folks, we are now sitting on waterfront property once again. We could conceivably row straight across the field to the Covered Bridge but the current is such that it probably wouldn’t be such a good idea. Water is over the driveway to the tune of probably six feet and will go higher with the continuing rain, so we are in for a few days. The dogs love to go for walks in this weather as they pick the small critters out of the low branches of the trees, just like candy. The wind is especially unnerving today, and likely there will be some p...

  • Holiday bazaar this Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 8, 2012

Winter is here, it looks like. The leaves seem to be more colorful this year for some reason. Maybe because we haven’t had much frost. Hunting season is definitely in full swing. Lots of hunters out and about so don’t forget to keep an eye on your pets, especially if they don’t like gunshots. I understand that quite a few animals have already been taken. We had a great weekend as we took a quick trip to Redmond. Ore. for the opening of Smith Rock Brewing Company, the new brew pub and restaurant owned and run by our daughter Danielle, her husba...

  • Lots to do in coming weeks in the Westend

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 1, 2012

My deepest condolences to Lori, Kaelee and the rest of the Dearmore family on the sad loss of Jon. He was a friend to all and his community service will never be outdone. He did much to get the Westend of our county recognized in a positive manner. May he rest in peace. I had hoped to start my column back up much sooner than this but I must say, it has taken some time to get back to any sense of normalcy since Del’s stroke. He is making progress daily with his right side movement in his leg and arm and is beginning to say a few words. This h...

  • Last Downriver column for a while

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 13, 2012

How does one adequately say thank you to a community and its people for all their prayers, love, hugs, and support when you need it? Well, here goes. Last Thursday morning, my husband suffered a stroke and lost his ability to speak and his right side is paralyzed. Thank you, Grays River EMS folks for your gentleness, kindness, speed and professionalism as well as your medical skills in getting him to Longview in a timely manner. As volunteers and friends, you are each one in a million, and I appreciate you so much. To everyone who has called,...

  • Haymakers taking advantage of weather

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 6, 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and enjoyed the nice weather we had as well. There were lots of things going on all over the area with yard sales, bake sales, Farmstock in Naselle, and barbecues with friends and family. Haymakers are still working on getting the bales made and stored away for the winter feedings. Derek Heitsch is making hay on one of our fields, and it seems to be taking forever with the moisture in the air during the nights. His cows will enjoy it later with all the nice clover from that field. News from Naselle:...

  • Church garage sale this Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 30, 2012

After nearly a month without rain, we drove in from Oregon on Sunday evening and looking to the west, sure enough, the rain was back. Not much though, just enough to irritate the farmers who are still making hay. News from Naselle: Before school begins for the 2012/13 year, many will be enjoying a last long weekend and finishing up their school shopping. Then back to the books. Here’s to a fantastic new school year. The first day of school will be on Tuesday. Check with the school office if you have questions about classes or bus schedules. S...

  • Good food and fun to be had at church BBQ

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

Thank you Mother Nature, we really are getting a summer. This weather is great, not too hot for too long and it even cools down at night. We had the pleasure of Steve and Linda Ramsay’s grandchildren coming over for a hot dog roast with s’mores and ice cream the other night after they went swimming in the Grays River near our house. Kids sure have a way of brightening the day. Thank you for the kid fix, Sarah, Skyler, Logan, Brandon and Brenton. Come back any time. Oh yes, glad to have Steve, Linda, Brandon and Amanda as well. News from Nas...

  • Fund raising garage sale for Kenzie Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

Have you had a chance to watch any of the meteor showers this week? With the clear skies most evenings, we have been enjoying a few sightings while sitting in the hot tub. What a relaxing way to spend the evening. I hope you have also taken advantage of the beautiful, warm weather this past week, but it looks like another weather alert for today with extremely warm temps. Remember to make sure your animals have lots of opportunity to get out of the heat and have access to fresh water. News from Naselle: I had an opportunity to try out the new...

  • GRV Library makes plans for movie nights

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 2, 2012

News from Naselle: Looking for a good cup of java? It looks like a new addition at the corner of SR 4 and SR 401. Check out the new little drive through coffee shop Mochas & More that will be open soon. The cute little orange house turned into a coffee stop is the newest venture for Laura Rey of Naselle. Her husband is Glen Rey, manager of Okie’s Select Market in Naselle, and you may have noticed them doing a little painting and yard work around the area over the last week or so. I don’t have an opening date yet, but I’m told it will be withi...

  • Head to Johnson Park Saturday for a picnic

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 19, 2012

How did you enjoy the thunder and lightning show last Friday night? It was great until we were awakened by our dogs barking and growling and raising a loud commotion. When we got up, we found an extra dog in the living room on our couch and he wasn’t about to leave with all the noise outside. It turned out to be our neighbor’s, Al and Nancy George's dog Butch, the brother of our older male dog. He doesn’t like these noisy nights, so went looking for a place to hide. All ended well, after we had to wake up Al and Nancy to come take him home...

  • Head to the National Night Out August 7

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 12, 2012

I guess it’s time to get back to work and the real world after an absolutely wonderful week with family and folks we consider to be a part of our family. We had the pleasure of housing all six of our kids and their spouses or significant other, all of our grandchildren and a great-grandson. Altogether we had about 54 people and 12 dogs in our little tent city. The weather cleared up nicely after the first night of showers and the rest of the time it was beautiful. I hope everyone had even half as nice a holiday as we did. Now it is really quiet...

  • Johnson Park picnic set for July 21

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 28, 2012

Here’s hoping for good weather next week, as we are expecting a houseful, including all of our children, grandchildren, great grandson, and others who consider themselves part of our family, about 40-45 in all. The property will probably look like a tent city, so hopefully no rain. I will not be contributing a Down River Dispatches column in next week’s Eagle, but will resume in the following week’s paper. Thank you for understanding, family first. This column will also be abbreviated as I am in preparation mode and I finally have a kitch...

  • Busy times at Johnson Park

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 21, 2012

Where, oh where, is our summer? Rain, rain and more rain. I certainly hope it dries out soon so that the hay makers can get their fields mowed and baled. If the grass grows any higher we will be calling out the sheriff to go into the fields to find the tractors and their drivers. As least that’s how tall it is in our fields. We have seen elk and deer actually jumping up to see over the grass, to find their way, I assume. It is supposed to be summer now. News from Naselle: Don’t forget the second Annual Silent Auction sponsored by The Fri...

  • Silent auction begins today

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 14, 2012

News from Naselle: Even though school is out for the summer break, it doesn’t mean that plans aren’t being made for classes and events for next year. The Naselle School Board members will meet on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are public and community members are encouraged to attend. The Friends of the Naselle Library are holding their second Annual Silent Auction from June 14 through June 26. News from Naselle: The Naselle-Grays River Valley High School class of 2012 will bid farewell to one chapter of their lives on Saturday when they accept their diplomas, graduating from high school. The ceremony will take place in the gym at 4 p.m. This group of students will take their place in the new world of learning when they make their decisions on where to go from here. Many will head off to college, and some will make their way without a higher education. No matter what the choice, it will be difficult in the world as it is now. As a...

  • School gets ready for graduation

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 30, 2012

Is anyone else being swarmed with hummingbirds? I have never seen so many at the same time. My feeders have to be refilled daily and sometimes there are two birds eating at the same time on each of the little flowers for a total of six birds on each feeder. They are amazing little creatures. My cats are just about crazy looking at them through the window, especially when a bird will hover on the other side of the glass where the cat’s staring. News from Naselle: Less than two weeks left in the 2012 school year, with several important events com...

  • Support our American heroes this weekend

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 24, 2012

Rain, rain, rain is back again with a vengeance. Just as we get used to the sun and dry weather, we are brought back to reality. The plain facts of living in this beautiful part of the northwest. At least it isn’t cold and the gardens that have been planted will benefit. News from Naselle: The Naselle Comet track team will head to Cheny to compete in the state track meet on May 25 and 26. Good luck team! In honor of Memorial Day the students from the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will have May 28 off. Classes will resume on May 2...
