As I finish up this column, the temperature is climbing and it looks like a really warm day for this Tuesday. Personally, I prefer the cooler days, but as long as it doesn’t last too long, I guess I can tolerate it. I love the sudden warm showers, then sunshine and even some rainbows on occasion. It’s time to make hay though, guess I shouldn’t jinx the haymakers. Fourth of July is tomorrow (Friday), and hopefully many will be celebrating with family and friends. Please remember to take special pains with your pets and keep them safe. So many...

Last weekend, it seemed like all the old cars in the whole area were driving down SR 4. What a wonderful sight, seeing all the cars and bringing back lots of old memories for many of us. I hear that the Car Show in Skamokawa was once again a huge success. I was happy to finally get a chance to mow the lawn again after all the moisture we had been getting. It was almost time to decide whether to bring cows into the yard to graze or to make hay. Once it starts growing in the spring, there’s no stopping it. News from Naselle: Naselle high s...

It will be a short column this week as I am spending many hours in the hospital room of my husband. We had a pretty serious set back on Mother’s Day and I had to take him to emergency. He is suffering from pneumonia, blood clots in his lung and erratic heart beat. Hopefully this will be over and done with by the time the paper comes out. This weekend is an especially busy one here in our area, with lots going on. Saturday, you are invited to the annual Plant/Bake sale and Soup Luncheon fundraiser for the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson P...
After the nice few days, the weekend turned into another wet one. Our son, Carl and his girlfriend Dion were here for the weekend from Seattle as well as other son, Shane. They had hoped to get some dry hiking in but that didn’t pan out, so they took the dogs for a damp one. It’s always so good to have kids home, and especially when they can do a few things around the place. Mom even got an oil change on the car. Thanks boys. And it was wonderful to see Dion again, such a delightful young lady. Good weekend, even if it did rain. News from Nas...
Happy May Day everyone! Does anyone remember the little crepe paper May baskets we made as kids, filled them with odds and ends and candies and hung them on door knobs. I wish I could remember how to fold the paper to cut them out. Anyone remember? My grandfather always got molasses chips in his basket because he was very special and they were his favorite candies. Spring is definitely in the air with the smell of cherry blossoms, fresh mown grass, and many of the wildflowers beginning to bloom. The dogs are shedding their winter coats, and if you brush them outside and leave the fur, the birds are in a mad rush to pick it up and carry it off. A few butterflies are even appearing, and the hummingbird feeder needs to be refilled frequently. Nature sure has a beautiful way of beginning new life in the spring. News from Naselle Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams: Thursday (today), track at North...

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had found my first trillium. Well, on my walk with the dogs yesterday, I hit the jackpot. There must have been 300 trilliums in one little area of our woods. They were just beautiful, and I had never seen so many, so I picked my first bouquet to enjoy in the house. The hummingbirds are back in full force and they sure are hungry little devils. They are so much fun to watch, and their colors so brilliant. Country life is the only way to go, and welcome to Spring. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for...

I hope everyone kept their feet dry last weekend after the amount of rain and wind we ended up with. Our son and his girlfriend were here for the weekend but made an early exit on Saturday night in order to get out before we were flooded in. It didn’t last very long but was sure fast coming in. Looks like more silt building up in the pastures, and more pot holes to fill. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week include: Tuesday, the 18th-fast pitch and baseball at Ocosta at 4 p.m., Thursday, the 20th-fast p...
Spring seems to be almost here, frogs singing, hummingbirds are back, daffodils are blooming and the buds are causing the trees to turn a different color. I haven’t been able to find any trilliums yet, though. At least our weather seems to have been much milder than that of the rest of the country, so I guess we really can’t complain. Just when you think the worst is over as far as storms are concerned, here comes another one with lots of rain. This time it has filled our field to the brim and Lake Fred is back, great for the ducks but not for driving in or out the driveway. Looks like we are in for a couple of days. The dogs are happy campers, as they like to hunt the mice that climb the trees. It’s almost like picking apples off the tree. Unfortunately they come in with wet and muddy feet. Oh well, I guess that’s why we live in the country, and I wouldn’t trade it for a...
Since I didn’t have to go anywhere during the snowy days we have had, I took the opportunity to enjoy what little accumulation we had. It was a beautiful sight with the snow causing the tree branches to hang almost to the ground, heavy with the white stuff. We were the lucky ones though, I think. All around us it was pretty scary, especially if you had to drive. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the coming week for the Comet teams: Friday, the 14th-middle school boys basketball with South Bend in Naselle at 5:45 p.m. Go Comets! Last F...
