As reported in The Eagle, the construction of the new arena was dealt a financial blow last week when the remaining budget was reduced to $11,000. In order to ensure our fair proceeds as planned, the fair board and I are brainstorming alternative solutions, so that we are not solely reliant on the construction being completed. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit this makes organizing the fair a challenge but over the years our little fair has bounced back from much worse, and looking at the bigger picture we must concentrate on ensuring the future o...
Within the role of fair manager I’ve had the pleasure to work with a wide range of community based groups. I’m delighted to confirm that this year we’ve partnered with the Wahkiakum Community Network. A long time supporter of the fair, the Community Network has graciously agreed to sponsor a mechanical bull ride! Fun for any age, the mechanical bull ride will be available Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. each day. Both boards are excited to start a new tradition, focusing on working together to support our community. Are you looki...
It’s been an exciting week down at the fairgrounds, with many projects moving forward. Pacific Tech has started excavating the construction site in preparation for pouring the new foundations for the main arena. The rumors are true, the 2009 premium book is here! Grab your copy today and start organizing your entries as fair is just around the corner. Please remember to double c...
Get ready, as the 2009 Premium Book will be distributed next week! That’s right, the wait is finally over and the new and improved premium book will soon be coming your way. After months of planning I am delighted to confirm that the fair board has agreed to proceed with construction of the new arena. Due to the tight time line the fair board considered postponing construction until after our 101st fair, but Pacific Tech has pulled out all the stops, ensuring we will be up and ready come August 20. I really appreciate all of our loyal vendors' patience as I understand there are other venues on offer. The last few weeks have been a challenge but the fair board and I are committed to Wahkiakum and look forward to bre...
The Wahkiakum County fair has been part of our community for over 100 years, showcasing the best and brightest of our beautiful county. Each year we face new challenges, but with the help and continued support of the community, we have gone from strength to strength. With a brand new facility on the horizon, the fairgrounds will finally be able to offer a unique venue, competitive with the surrounding areas. Next year the fair will receive no county funding, so we must pull together to raise funds. The fair board and I are committed and plan...
The fair board and I are delighted to congratulate Pacific Tech for winning the bid to design and build the new fairgrounds arena! This marks a new era for the fairgrounds, a fresh start, helping our community continue in one of its century old traditions. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate one of our fair volunteers. For many years Deb Gribskov has been active in the community, volunteering her time as a 4-H leader and fair superintendent for poultry. As well as her volunteer work, Deb is also a Math and Science...

The fair board and I invite you to attend a public meeting next Monday from 7 p.m. at the River Street Meeting Room in Cathlamet, to discuss the rebuilding of the main fairground structure. This will be your chance to express an opinion on what you think is the best solution. The new building provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the fairgrounds and open up possibilities of new revenue. As our 101st fair is a short six months away it’s important that we work together to ensure the fairgrounds future. If you want to give your two c...

It’s been a cold and wet week but that hasn’t stopped us pushing forward with the fair clean up. This week we saw some dramatic changes as the remains of the Commercial Building and Horse Arena were cleared away. Not only has the Horse Barn roof been replaced but also the guttering on the T Building and 4-H Barn. The clean up crew has been working hard, cleaning, painting and organizing the fairgrounds from top to bottom. They even discovered some lost treasures from previous fairs including pictures and newspapers from over the last dec...
This week the cleanup crew has made great progress, painting the Grange Food Booth from floor to ceiling. Our power washer has been winning the battle with most paths mud free. The park area has seen a great improvement as we start to utilize the new space created by volunteers Ray Badger and John Luthi last year. With Donaldson Construction working on the Horse Barn roof repairs and the Commercial Building work starting on Friday, we are right on schedule. Don’t forget to buy your tickets for the annual Valentine Diamond Dinner happening n...
It’s been a productive week for the cleanup crew, working together to remove the flood debris. The team has been working hard restoring the Cow Barn and Grange to their former glory and are determined to make the fairgrounds shine. I must admit frozen water pipes make cleaning a challenge but the team has been very resourceful. Plans are in full swing for the annual Valentine Diamond Dinner happening on February 14 at the Grange Hall in Skamokawa. The fair board has been working flat out to create a unique evening of wonderful food and f...

There is a long road ahead but the fair board and I are committed to ensuring we have a 101st fair. If you’re looking for something to do this Valen...

Our Haunted House fundraiser was a lot of fun, with screams of terror as well as delight, as families came together to enjoy the 4-H bake sale, carnival games and haunted house. The hot apple cider flowed as we laughed, screamed and worked together to raise money for next year’s fair. I wish to thank all of the fantastic kids who volunteered; you did a great job and really made the night fun. We had students from all over the county including Naselle, Skamokawa, and Cathlamet.
