Following last week’s article in The Eagle discussing the proposed funding cuts for the fair I thought it would be best to clarify a couple key issues. Since taking on the role of fair manager I have strived to utilize the fairgrounds, hoping to create a secure financial future. When I first met with the commissioners in October of 2008 to discuss the next year’s budget, I had every intention of pushing forward with my plan for the fair to become self-reliant. After the December snow storm and the collapse of the commercial building, it bec...
It’s been an interesting and rewarding year for the fairgrounds, resulting in an amazing new arena. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs (no pun intended), with Mother Nature putting us through the ringer time and time again. Yet here we are 12 months down the road and the fairgrounds look better than ever. Working alongside Chuck Beyer and FEMA, I was able to purchase new freezers and refrigerators for the Grange kitchen, totally revamping the equipment, replacing items which hadn’t worked correctly for years. We also...
We’ve seen snow, sleet, hail and a little freezing rain but I’m delighted to confirm the fair grounds are still standing. Volunteer Paul Lawrence has been busy, working hard to ensure we’re tucked up nicely for the long winter ahead. With last year’s damage behind us and funding from the county in place, 2010 is looking very positive. I must admit that I am thrilled to confirm that the new fair board president for 2010 is Becky Ledtke of Skamokawa. Becky has been an active volunteer within the community for many years, including 10 years a...

It was a turkey bonanza at this year’s Turkey Bingo fund raiser, with lots of Wahkiakum families winning their Thanksgiving dinner. The Backmans outdid themselves, organizing the whole evening and donating the fantastic blu ray and Wii player raffle prizes. Martha and our fair volunteers did an outstanding job, raising over $1,600 for next year’s fair. The fair board and I wish to thank Martha and her family for all their hard work and continued support. Don’t miss our upcoming Christmas Bazaar happening December 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. withi...

This year the fairgrounds has faced many challenges, but I am proud to say that each challenge has only made the fair stronger and more determined to survive. Within my role as fair manger, I have tried to identify solutions and opportunities which can benefit the fair and am thrilled to confirm that we have just been awarded a grant for $15,521 to add heating to the historic T Building. The grant is a special assistance grant awarded by the Department of Agriculture available to county fairs within our state. The total money available was...

After 12 months of planning and preparation I must admit that I’m relieved but also sad that our 101st fair celebration has ended. It’s been a challenging year but we’ve worked hard and are proud to show off the new fairgrounds arena. Yes, having power and doors would have made things easier but life would be boring if everything always went to plan. Mother Nature’s been keeping us on our toes the last few years but we’ve managed to make the best out of every situation. Now is the time to look towards the future and how we can work together...

Well the wait is finally over. After months of planning and hard work, our 101st fair celebration has now begun! Grab your family and head on down as this year we’ve pulled out all the stops. The Model-T races are back for their second year and the competition is fierce. You won’t want to miss the final race on Saturday at noon. This year to help families get the most out of the fair I’ve included an insert in today’s Eagle, featuring the fair’s schedule of events. We have some old favorites such as COSMO the balloon wizard and Kristi Ne...
The countdown has begun! Only one week left until our 101st fair celebration. The fairgrounds are buzzing with activity as three new buildings are being constructed to help house this year’s animal exhibits. This includes a new barn for the exotics as well as two other structures thanks to a donation of a Quonset by Grays River Grange member Krist Novoselic. Thanks to Krist’s generosity, we are now able to build two separate structures which will fit in perfectly beside the small animal barn. Now what we need is some extra pairs of hands to...
There is an angel among us, she has faced some of life’s toughest challenges and yet continues to think of others and how she can lend a hand in support. Within my time as fair manager, she and her family have proven time and time again that they are a pillar of our great community. I am once again speaking of the great Donna Moody and her lovely family who have just donated a new fryer for the Grange kitchen! Earlier this year Donna and other Grays River Grange members purchased and donated an ice machine, improving the Grange Food booth b...
Last year it was brought to my attention that the poultry cages were becoming a hazard, with more than one child cutting their hand while tending to their animal. I’m delighted to announce that the fair has just received delivery of forty new poultry cages! Purchased via a grant through the Wahkiakum Community Foundation and the Bradwood Landing Fund, the new pens will make a huge difference for both the exhibitors and birds. Get your hands on this summer's bargain and buy your season pass today! A steal at $6, you can purchase a pass t...
