Members of the Wahkiakum High School golf team were among the injured in a five-vehicle traffic accident at 1:25 p.m. last Thursday. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, the team was in a 2005 Ford Excursion, fourth in a line of eastbound vehicles stopped for highway maintenance work near milepost 44, about two miles west of County Line Park. A woman has died after walking off the bow of the ferry Oscar B. while the vessel was crossing the Columbia River Friday night. The ferry crew witnessed the incident and notified the US Coast Guard about 9:30 p.m. The crew began searching for the woman, who has been identified as Barbara Cole, age 51, from the Goldendale area. A Coast Guard helicopter crew arrived on the scene at 10 p.m. and helped recover the woman. The helicopter crew flew her to a Clatsop County hospital, but she did not survive. Slowly but surely, the Wahkiakum Conservation District is working to rebuild the health of the streams in the Skamokawa Creek basin. The district has been working with landowners in Middle Valley to stabilize stream beds and improve fish habitat.
