By Rick Nelson The Wahkiakum Mule football team begins the 2018 season with one of its largest rosters in years. Even with 31 players on the squad as of Monday, this year's team is a mixture of youth and experience. "We have 31 kids turning out of which 10 are upperclassmen," Mule Coach Erick Hansen said Monday. "Of those, eight are football players (two are foreign exchange students). There are 21 freshmen and sophomores. "I'm cautiously optimistic." The Mules had five seniors on last year's roster, including two exchange students just...

Town of Cathlamet officials reported progress on a variety of issues at the monthly town council meeting on Monday. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank said the town crew had found two large water leaks and repaired them. They were leaking 60,000 gallons or more per day, he said. Working with a consultant, they’ve found many other small leaks, probably caused by deteriorating band joints; Cruickshank called it “death by 1,000 cuts." Early in the summer, a major leak in a main running through the Birnie Creek channel almost drained the sys...
Commissioners of Port District 2 addressed infrastructures and staffing at their monthly meeting Tuesday at Skamokawa Vista Park. Commissioners authorized Manager Janet Bryan to obtain estimates for upgrading electric and water lines at Vista park. The electrical line serving camping loop run is no longer adequate for demand, commissioners said. The water line is also troublesome, Bryan said, and has had significant leaks. “It’s just a matter of time before the whole water line goes,” she said. With a new line, they could add additional faucets...

Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to send a revised version of an update of the county shoreline management plan to the county planning commission for review and recommendation. In 2017, the planning commission completed a multi-year effort to update the county’s aging original plan and recommended that the board of commissioners adopt it. However, land owners objected to the plan’s new provisions and said they feared the new plan would prohibit them from using land along streams and rivers for agriculture and other traditional uses....
Wahkiakum County is nearing the end of its two-year old effort to set up a 10-year permit for depositing dredged sand on four eroding shorelines, but county commissioners and residents learned Tuesday that there is sand for only one of the sites. US Army Corps of Engineers officials reported this past week that there is a need for Columbia River channel dredging only at Cape Horn, Public Works Director Chuck Beyer said Tuesday. Corps officials anticipate that dredging and beach nourishment will occur in early October. That means property...

The system is losing as much as 175,000 gallons per day, Public Works Superintendent Duncan Curickshank said this week. That's about half the water plant's daily production. Department staff have been searching for possible leaks, and a...
I’m not sure how everyone else is dealing with all the heat and dry weather for the past few weeks, but I’m ready for rain, lots of rain. My well is about dry and it’s quite nerve wracking. I don’t even dare to mow, as I am afraid hitting a rock will spark the dry grass and cause a huge fire. Be safe everyone. News from Naselle: FinnFest 2018 is now a part of history and what a great event for all to enjoy. With the food, flowers, music, dancing, all the displays and lectures, how could anyone find anything to criticize? It was amazing...

"Once they're down, they have to clean up the highway and get ready for the next...
Local officials are still waiting for a geotech report before deciding what to do about the closure of the Elochoman Valley Road. Wahkiakum County commissioners closed the road last winter after area residents observed a timbered hillside was sliding and threatening their homes. Hancock Forest Industries owns the sliding hillside and has commissioned the geotech report to determine the scope and structure of the slide. On Monday, County Engineer Paul Lacy met with Hancock representatives and viewed a preliminary draft of the report. The report...
The Wahkiakum County board of commissioners voted 3-0 Tuesday to approve a new contract with most employees and department heads and acted on other business at their meeting Tuesday. The contract, effective July 1, runs through the end of 2020, said Commissioner Blair Brady, who negotiated for the board. The raises included elected officials, non-elected employees and most union employees. It doesn't cover ferry workers, who have their own union contract, judges and the prosecuting attorney, whose salaries are set by a state board, and the...
