Rebecca Gourley, WNPA Olympa News Bureau|Mar 19, 2014

OLYMPIA — Some Washington drivers could see a new fee added to their vehicle-tab transactions starting next year. Both the Senate and House agreed on a bill that would add a $5 fee for vehicle-registration renewals and purchases and a $12 fee for title transactions through public offices. Unless the bill is vetoed by the governor, a rare occurrence, it will become law. The money generated by the new fees would pay for a third 144-car ferry. Currently, private businesses that offer these services already charge an administrative fee,...

OLYMPIA — No motorist enjoys waiting at a traffic light that won't turn green. But the problem is especially vexing for motorcyclists, who often encounter traffic signals with sensors that don’t recognize their bikes. A bill aimed at resolving the problem got the green light in the state Legislature and will become law if it’s not vetoed by the governor. First introduced during last year's legislative session, Senate Bill 5141 would make it legal for motorcyclists to go through a red traffic signal when the detection device fails to rec...

OLYMPIA — Emotions were high on the Senate floor earlier this month as legislators debated whether to pursue a proposal to study nuclear energy’s prospects in Washington. Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, says nuclear power safer and more efficient than in the past, and deserves a fresh look as a source for electricity. "Nuclear power will have a future in Washington state," he said during the Feb. 12 floor debate. Following the debate, a bill that would create a task force to study nuclear power as a replacement for fossil fuels passed w...

OLYMPIA—Riding a motorcycle around on a warm Northwest day is a relaxing pastime, unless you get stuck at a traffic light that just won't turn green. Traffic sensors are designed to help facilitate the flow of traffic by triggering a green light when a vehicle is detected at an intersection. Senate Bill 5141 would allow a motorcyclist to proceed through an intersection after waiting one full cycle — and "exercising due care" — If the sensors on a traffic signal fail to detect a motorcycle. The bill passed in the Senate on...

  • Discover Pass revenue continues to grow

Rebecca Gourley, WNPA Olympa News Bureau|Jan 29, 2014

OLYMPIA — Discover Pass revenue is going up, but not fast enough. With the general fund money gap, it’s hard to keep parks open. But they are managing by trying to promote the pass program and reduce staff. Three years after Washington’s Discover Pass program was implemented, revenue from sales of the pass continues to grow. The pass, which is a user fee for vehicle entry into public lands such as state parks and natural resource lands, brought in an average of $13 million a year during its first two years. But during the fiscal year end...
