As I was growing up, my Dad used to tell me ‘your health is an investment that you give to your future self.’ It took me a while to understand what he meant, but I get it now. This day and age, the word ‘health’ encompasses a broad spectrum of facets in our lives- from potential improvements to complete life changing events, our health is always on the table. Even though most of us know that our best health directly affects our output, it can seem impossible to attain at times. Mental health, physical health and emotional health must often t...
Since time immemorial, salmon have shaped the lives of the people who live in this region. Their importance cannot be understated, and their viability is imperative. Wahkiakum Outdoors has a presentation coming up next month regarding the future of salmon in Washington. If you have yet to attend one of these presentations, I highly encourage you to make this your first; November 12 at 6:30 p.m., in the Hope Center. This discussion will investigate the future of, arguably, the most epic creature. The Community Center advisory committee will...
The Hope Center and the Community Center have a lot going on these next few weeks. There is much volunteering and outreach coming together, it’s a beautiful thing. I have been so moved by the comments left in the RAKs jar. If you aren’t a RAK’er yet, it’s time to join. Membership is free, you can participate at your own rate and the benefits are far reaching! Random Acts of Kindness never go out of style. The RAK jar is still living at Patty Cakes, so grab a coffee and take a moment to think about what has been done to you, or what you have do...
I feel like spring was just yesterday and tomorrow is Christmas. Anyone else experiencing a lovely dose of time these past few weeks? They came, they conquered. I’m still trying to catch my breath from the last rush of summer. The fair was such a good time, I was overwhelmed by a sincere and humbling gratitude towards this bucolic county. Most impressive by far, were the kids. I saw a lot of well behaved, well mannered, hardworking young folk. It was a pleasure to meet the fair queen Genevieve and the living embodiment of Victoria Birnie, b...
Whether you grew up here or you transplanted, there is something very connecting about the folks who hold space in this beautiful nook of the planet. Wahkiakum is a culmination of beauty, history and grit. We take care of each other out here. The natural allure of the waters and the hills is breathtaking, but what makes it unique are its people. A vein of ‘salt of the earth’ people with varied experiences, passions and backgrounds flow here. In this way, our county is so rich. “A nice family in town gave me a room to live in for two month...

Kelly, our kind and hard-working Community Outreach Specialist will hold down the booth on Thursday for Seniors Day....
The Wahkiakum Random Acts of Kindness jar has been overflowing! I am happy to announce that good deeds are not hard to come by in this diverse and spunky town. Next week I will publish a handful of the notes you have submitted. The RAKS jar is visiting Patty Cakes this week, so be sure to add to it. Speaking of kindness, we at the community center want to give a warm thank you to Mike Passmore. He continually helps create amazing presentations for Wahkiakum Outdoors, he creates helpful data for the CC, he is an avid mentor, a good friend and...

Opportunity can often be hidden deep inside of an obstacle. Sometimes, life pitches the proverbial curveball, catching you off guard. When that happens, in order to digest the obstacle, to find the juicy prospect, a simple perspective adjustment can be the saving grace. Use your mind as a tool for digging into an obstacle, rather than letting it hold you down in despair. Nothing is impossible, change is inevitable and you have the power to bend a setback into a future gift for yourself. The community center is excited for a new club starting...
The first cameras were quite cumbersome, it was a delicate process that involved mixing chemical potions just to develop a single print. Something is truly timeless about taking a photograph, but now-a-days cameras are everywhere. On your phone, in your car, on your TV. The lens has definitely gone through some transitions, but a picture can still say a thousand words. If you have interest in learning about cameras and photography, a new class will start on April 6, 10 a.m. to noon. It is open to the public and will be an ongoing class...
I am curious as to how many of you have a song that you can always turn to. Where, no matter what is going on in life, the first three seconds after clicking “play” change your cellular structure, a smile rips across your face and you can’t help but keep the beat? Music can be so many things. It can be warmth after a series of events that leave you feeling cold. Sometimes it is a light in the dark. Listening to music that resonates with your soul can be a game changer in the middle of a bad day. If you need someone to talk to because you are f...
Here comes the sun! The past week at the Community Center has been full of excitement. Gardeners, the Seed Exchange is this Saturday @ 10 a.m. Make it a part of your weekend to stop in and meet some local Master Gardeners and choose some seeds for your plot. Spring is fast approaching, so this event will help jump start you into a happy, healthy garden. A correction to last week’s paper, visits from the health care authority will be at the center on the first Wednesday of every month. If you missed out on going yesterday, and you need help w...
Lots to do these coming weeks here in town. Book Clubbers and ‘want to be’ book clubbers, you still have time to read “The 100 year old man who climbed out the window and disappeared” by Jonas Jonasson before Friday, March 8th. It’s about an old guy who is desperate to avoid his 100th birthday party. The book isn’t the least bit dull, packed with lots of history, a very enjoyable read. The group gets together every second Friday at 11, if you’d like to join in. Next Thursday, March 7th is the second meeting in regard to the School Summer...
As spring creeps closer, outside activities are inevitable. To me, one of the greatest joys in life, is to plant a seed, patiently trusting that in fact, it will grow. Whether it is a flower, a vegetable or an idea, all that is needed, is the initial will to follow through with the first step. Do you already have a garden? Do you enjoy canning foods? Are you interested in starting one, but don’t know where to begin? Perhaps you secretly long to eat more of your yard and less from the store. If you don’t already have it on your calendar, Saturda...
Despite the cold temperatures, Wahkiakum is staying busy. It’s a good time to focus on what you want for the year. How will you make each day count? What will you learn? What can you teach others? Before the hibernation is over, set your intentions. The community center is a great place to converge and share ideas. Our computers are available to you, maybe we can help you dust off your resume or perhaps you need some help finding services in town. Stop in and visit if it’s been a while. Coming up on Feb. 26 @ 6:30 p.m., Wahkiakum Outdoors pre...
As time often does, it seems to be flying by this week. Garden beds will be prepped, seeds will be planted, and crops will be shared throughout our community. The annual seed sharing event this year will be something everyone can enjoy. This will be a fun opportunity to meet your neighbors who are Master Gardeners, share some seeds and envision what you will grow this year. Tying...
