    National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, is held annually to acknowledge the contributions of individuals and organizations. It began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Every president since has signed a proclamation promoting volunteering. A Gallup survey for the Independent Sector found that 44 percent of adult Americans volunteer an average of 3.6 hours per week.     This week, October 4-10 is National 4-H Week, a week-long celebration of 4-H across the country. Today’s 4-H is a community of more than six million young people who participate in projects that enhance their leadership, citizenship and life skills, 540,000 volunteers and 3,500 professionals. 4-H is the youth education program of Washington State University Extension.     4-H Camp Morehead will be held on the Long Beach Peninsula at Nahcotta July 19-24. It is open to 4-H members who are in the 3rd grade and eight years old.     The Lambing Management School on April 17-18 was well attended including several youth participants. Dr. Scott Lubers and Patrick McKay-Beach worked with participants during lambing on the McKay-Beach farm on Puget Island. The first in a series of Family Movie Nights was held on April 25 with the After School 4-H Media Club showing the videos they have produced and the new movie release “Bedtime Stories” courtesy of the Video Store in Cathlamet.     Last Saturday, eight members of the Intro to Media Workforce Prep Class toured KLTV in Longview. Producer Joe Creppell spoke to the youth about community access television. They learned about the type of editing software used, toured the production studio and learned about the use of a “green screen,” they also got to view a production by another youth team.     We are well into the first of our series of Workforce Prep Classes for middle and high school students. The class on Media Intro has 12 middle school members who are learning about making videos and posting them to the 4-H Blog at: http://wahki-4hnews.blogspot.com.     Yes, WSU Extension is still alive and well in Wahkiakum County. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30-4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The office will also be open on Fridays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. depending upon volunteer availability. The WSU Extension office is located at 25 River Street, Suite E next to the PUD building in Cathlamet.
