NOT SO NICE--Wouldn't you know, the sun is shining as this work week begins but it sure would have been nice to have sun during the Bald Eagle Day festivities! At least by fireworks time, it was dry enough for folks to get out and enjoy them. Right now, it's steamy outside as all this moisture is just cooking up out of the ground by this sun and making us feel quite uncomfortable. They say we're in for a so-so week with nicer, more summer-like temperatures come Sunday--we'll see! NOT OUR HEIDI--You may have heard that a Heidi Lynn Knowles was...
THE END--Here we are at the end of yet another month and this day marks the half way point in the year. Holy smokes, where did the first half of 2011 go? I have yet to start on all those New Year resolutions I made! Before you know it, I'll be making them again, as it seems time is marching at a lightning pace and I'm getting further and further behind. I wonder what that means? ANOTHER ENDING--This weekend marked the end of the fourth annual Smoky Water Follies put on by the Skamokawa Grange. If you missed the show, you missed some great talen...
DO NOT USE--To all Eagle readers, please do not send anything to my email address that had been in this newspaper as gremlins got into that account recently and told everybody I was in Madrid, Spain and needed some money. Well, obviously, that is not true! My apologies for the bogus e-mails you got and the best way to eliminate those is to take that e-mail address out of your address book and block all notices from it. If you have news, please just call me directly. DRIPPY START--As this week began, it was sort of drippy, cloudy and cool on...
WET AND MUGGY--As this week began, we were back to raindrops off and on but some sun breaks made things steamy at times and it was pretty muggy on Monday really. Of course, anybody who has been fighting to get their lawn mowed between showers, knows that this is just the kind of weather that makes the ole grass grow before your eyes. They say we're going to get some summer like weather, and with summer officially starting next Tuesday, I'm sure we're all hoping that's true! It's almost impossible to get much done with only a day and a half of...
FANTASTIC--While we were all stressing out about the rain and the wind that had been going on most of last week, come Saturday, the Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod Run met with clear skies, sunshine and just fantastic weather all day long and of course, brought with it a wonderful turn out of cars once again. For the past six years we have had to stress out about the weather, as everyone knows that miserable weather means disaster when it comes to car shows, but the lucky streak has continued! The only thing you could say negative...
DECENT--As this three day Memorial weekend comes to an end, the sun is shining and it's turning out pretty nice; it's just too bad it wasn't like this the entire weekend. I hear tell that we're going to warm up and be very sunny and nice for the weekend and it couldn't come at a better time because the car show is coming! THIS IS IT--This weekend is a big one in Skamokawa and all the sturgeon fishermen are hoping for some good catches and all the car show folks are hoping the sun shows up, as the annual Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod...
DAMP BEGINNING--As this work week begins, it's a bit on the damp side, but considering we had several nice, dry days last week, I guess we can't complain. With the calendar still saying Spring, showers are to be expected and they dampen those gardens, so that's a good thing. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 26 to June 1 are Keil C. Parker, Tim Rushing, Katherine York, Don Anderson, Mike Johnson, Nancy Corbin, Penny Bonds, Wesley McClain, Serene Snow-Carroll, Jeanne Paulsen, Benjamin McClain, Amy Knowles, Stephanie Prestegard,...
WET START--As this week began, it was a very wet and nasty Sunday, so everyone who had been out working like crazy on Friday and Saturday, got to take a rest on Sunday, as it was not fit for man nor beast out there. Some of us even took this great opportunity to head to the Fair Foundation's chicken and dumpling dinner prepared by Janet Bryan. We not only got a rest from working in the yard but from cooking as well! Monday wound up being super nice after a cloudy beginning, and the folks trying to take advantage of the nice weather were working...
NICE--Once again we had half of a nice weekend, as Saturday saw some sun but there were also rain showers here and there. However, sunshine prevailed all day Sunday. I’m sure it was lawn mowing time for most, as the threat of rain was looming for Monday. We did indeed have some showers and breezy conditions return as the work week began. It felt great to have the windows open and feel some warmth from that sunshine for a change, so we’ll be asking for more of that in the days ahead, please. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating bir...
DIFFERENT DAYS--As the week began, it was absolutely miserable in West Valley, with rain coming down so hard on Sunday night that I wondered if I should be building an ark! However, it was great to see the work week begin with sunshine, as Monday was great, albeit windy, but that's okay, as at least we were able to let things dry out a little bit and the wind sometimes helps that happen a little faster. With a couple of nice days to follow, we are all quite pleased as the grass seems to grow faster than we can get the lawn mower filled up, so...
GRAY START--As this week begins, it's gray but dry and I woke to temperatures in the 30s. This is Spring? They say we're going to get lots of rain and by the end of the week it will be below freezing, so obviously Old Man Winter has not let go of his cold and miserable grip on us just yet. On Saturday we were even dodging heavy hail storms, between some sun breaks, so we had a bit of everything. SPECIAL DAYS--It seems I looked at the wrong month and got some dates mixed up last week so if you see a repeat of names this week, you'll understand...
SAME THING--I think saying "it's raining...again...still" is getting pretty monotonous, as we seem to start a lot of our weeks that way and end them like that as well--all wet! However, they say by the time you read this we'll have had some sunshine and warmth and it couldn't come any too soon to suit most of us. For the folks who have been to Hawaii lately, I can't tell you how jealous I am to see all those great sunny, blue sky pictures and hear about all those wonderful days on the beach. It's got to be my turn pretty soon! SPECIAL...
NOT BAD--I was expecting a wet weekend, but thankfully, we got a pretty nice couple of days, which is always a nice surprise. With one forecaster saying dry one day and wet the next and others saying showers off and on both days, it was nice to see that they were both wrong! In the last part of the week, they had even said no sun on one day, as the sun was streaming through my window, so hey, I was enjoying every bit of their incorrect forecast! Sunday night saw temperatures dive below freezing, which I hadn't heard was going to happen, but...
COLD, WHITE, WET AND WINDY--Well, we found out this past week that winter is definitely still here and depending on where you were and what day it was in this past week, you were either freezing cold, or dealing with many inches of snow or you were looking at the oh so common rain drops coming down out of the sky, accompanied by a strong nippy wind, a mixed bag of weather for sure. While Kelso was getting blasted by snow, I was quite happy that we didn't get hit with their seven to eight inches of the white stuff. While there were certain...
COLD WEEKEND--I don't know how cold it was at your house on Sunday morning but it read 20 degrees at my house. By the time you read this, clouds will have moved in and snow could be falling...ugh! As the white hills around us can attest to, the snowfall has been very close. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from February 24-March 2 are Allyx McKinley, Wyatt Parker, Darrin Down, Whitney Kuller, Ursula Jorgesen, Judy Garrison, Becky Hoven, Felicitie Knight, Krystal Ellison, Sally Nollan, Judy Pedersen and 67'er: Kathy Bond Peek.Here's...
WILD ONE--Last Saturday was a wild one fr awhile, as the wind came up and was just wreaking havoc in several places. Some cars in the Costco parking lot were not overly impressed with the windy weather when a culvert from a neighboring construction site took flight and landed on their vehicles. Wow, that would have ruined your day wouldn't it? Around our neck of the woods, we just had a lot of limbs scattering the roadways and some patio furniture had to be rescued by some East Valley residents, but I hadn't heard of anything real bad. On Monda...
DRIPPY--As this week begins, it's a little wet but not too bad and of course, if you were inside watching the Super Bowl, it really didn't matter what the weather was doing! Hope you were a Packer's fan, or the damp weather went along with your dampened mood! It was the most watched TV program of all time with over 11 million viewers! STORMS--After I turned in my news last week, I heard from several folks who were dealing some serious weather issues. Former resident Cheryl Moore Stamper was dealing with some very icy conditions back in St....
GRAY BEGINNING--The first couple of days of this week have been gray and drizzly but the sun came up Tuesday morning while temperatures dropped below freezing. They say we're going to have some clear but colder temps, so I hope you are prepared for that. Despite the mild temperatures we had the last week in January, this is still winter. Remember when the water line to Puget Island froze and broke? I bet everyone on Puget Island does! Let's hope we don't get that kind of weather again, as it was registering zero degrees in West Valley that day...
NICE BREAK--After the torrential rains we had, it is nice to have a bit of a dry streak. It seems we can't get the dry without the cold, but that's okay, as those heavy rains wind up causing so much grief, that I'd much rather deal with the nip in the air than the flood waters. At least I'm not buried in snow right now. It's bad enough for those still dealing with flooding problems; we certainly don't need to add snow to the mix. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from January 27-February 2 are Becky Thacker, Brandon McClain, Gary York,...
DRYING OUT--Wow, was that a wild weekend or what? Just when you thought the rain would slow down, it started back up and boy, oh boy, it did not take long for the "lakes" to appear and spill over onto our roadways, which caused some of the usual road closures in our area. However, the big thing comes when the water starts to scour out from under the roadways as you never know when you go through the standing water, whether the pavement has any support under it. I'm not sure what the total amount of rain was, but in one 24 hour period, there was...
WEATHER--Can you say nippy? We started this week with a light layer of snow in West Valley and all the hills around me are quite white, so in spite of the warming trend we had with some rain showers that quickly melted the snow in my yard, it was still white in the hills. On Monday evening, it was a very brisk 24 degrees, so my water was dripping and I was thinking, "well, if it starts to snow, it will definitely stick--ugh!" Before sending this in on Tuesday morning, it has the "snow look" in the sky. The temperature has risen, and the wind...
STILL COLD--Wow, we've had some nippy nights in West Valley but we certainly love the clear, sunny days that have often accompanied them. Our first day of the new year was mostly cloudy and I was fearing snow, but thankfully we didn't get any of that. I'd like it to warm up a bit, but as long as we're not suffering any horrific damages to anything, the frosty mornings and blue skies are looking pretty good right now. However, it sounds like we may be in for some changes so let's hope we don't slip and slide on freezing rain or wind up with a...
NOT TOO BAD--Considering that we've spent the days leading up to Christmas where we were frozen solid, like last year, and like the year before, where we saw umpteen buildings collapse, including our fairground's arena, this year's Christmas weather was a piece of cake! Just some drizzle and clouds and a bit of a breeze now and then but for the most part, it was pretty doggone mild, with temperatures between 48 and 51. Of course, I heard we may get a slight bit of snow by the time this paper goes out but they say it's not supposed to be a lengt...
HERE COMES CHRISTMAS--ready or not! I know many of you were hoping for a white Christmas but truthfully, snow only causes accidents and delays, whether you are driving or flying, and causes moms like me to be more stressed out! I've already had my fill of holidays and snow. Thank you very much! It sounds like we're going to be quite wet around here with a bit of wind thrown in for good measure, so I'm hoping to keep the power on and all our Christmas Eve and Day dinners to be cooked without the help of the barbecue! As long as we don't have...
WET ENOUGH?--Holy cow, did we have some rain last weekend or what? Not to mention before and after the weekend! Then of course, there was the wind, which was howling enough through West Valley to wake me up and it sounded like a freight train was coming through the back of the house--not good! While my field is a lake, my road is above water, at least as I begin to write this, so that's a good thing. It sure beats being trapped at home due to two feet of water over the road, which has happened multiple times before. In Grays River, we saw...
