GOT SUMMER--Everyone was happy to see the sun come out last week. It almost got a bit warm for me, but hey, it was nice to have dry for a change. Sunday morning saw us with some cloud cover though, so while it was dry, we didn't have that sunshine to perk us up first thing in the morning but at least it showed up by noon and we enjoyed another beautiful day. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 12-18 are Samantha McClain, Justin Perkins, Megan Miller, Marietta Montgomery, Jerry Ledtke, Sharrel Mooers, Jamie Kincaid, Cameron...

SHORT--The boss has asked me to make this column brief, so a run-down on this past week's Smoky Water Follies that took place at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, will occur next week, but suffice it to say, it was a great success and we thank everyone for volunteering their time to make it happen and to all of you for showing up to support it! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from are Irene Martin, Justin Hoven, Steve Hart, David Shrum, Debbie Kuller, David West, Cameron Cothren, Dean Takko, Mallory Bosch, Brad Towery,...

SUMMER?--The first true day of Summer wasn't too bad, nor was the next, but then came the weekend and a front moved in with lots of wind beginning on Thursday afternoon, with some rain nailing us on Saturday morning. By evening, the sky had cleared and it wasn't too bad, so while it wasn't perfect, it was certainly better than we expected. Several days have begun wet and then turned out decent, which has caused a muggy effect, but that beats some of the other weather issues that parts of our country are dealing with that are far worse, like...

GREAT ENDING--Last Friday was nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures. It was so nice, it was almost a shock to the system. With sunshine for a few days, it was time to get that outside work done as they said it wasn't going to last too long. I hope you beat the rain showers late Saturday, and made sure dad got to rest on Father's Day, although it was making any outdoor BBQ plans a little dismal. Hopefully all you dads had a great day anyway! While it is warm outside, remember your four-legged friend is wearing a heavy winter coat, so...

BRIEFLY WARMER--As this week began, we'd warmed up a bit from the wet and windy spell we had at the end of last week, so that's been nice. But by Tuesday morning, all was soaking wet again. This is pretty typical Spring weather with it springing a leak quite often! Let's hope for some drier days more events are happening which would really benefit from some dry weather conditions. COMING RIGHT UP--One of those events that would benefit from drier weather would be the second softball game between the Guns and Hoses teams this weekend at the high...

WET--As I begin this column on Monday, it's a bit soggy out here, making me glad we got the lawn mowed yesterday. It seems to be growing before our eyes and I'm sure it will need it again by the time we get another nice day. The forecast is a mix of clouds, showers and some drying periods, which some might interpret to mean, they don't know and have covered all their bases! NOT BAD--The Seventh Annual Rods and Reels Rod Run didn't have as many cars show up as in the past, but was still a great turnout in spite of the occasional drizzle. By the...

  • Big weekend here in Skamokawa

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 31, 2012

SO-SO--The big Memorial weekend has come to an end and while it wasn't a total bust for weather, it could have been better. While some were enjoying sunshine on Saturday, most of us here in Skamokawa were stuck in sea fog and windy conditions, which meant it was a bit nippy, especially for those on the beach. On Sunday things were a little warmer but still mostly cloudy, while Monday morning saw us with wet roads at first, but then it dried out enough to mow the lawn. Last week we had an unusual day with quite a bit of thunder, and it really...

BIG CHANGE--Just as we were getting used to those sunny, dry days, the rains came back and have really put a damper on all those outdoor projects. By the time we get back to the dry weather, the flower beds will need weeding again. On the bright side, if you had an aching back from all that yard work, the rain gave you a break and saved you from having to water all those plants and bushes you just planted! Don't forget to check out Skamokawa Gardens Nursery on Steamboat Slough Road for all your new plants! ALMOST HERE--We hope the weather...

GORGEOUS--I hope all of you have been slathering on the sunscreen as we've really had a wonderful stretch of sunshine lately! Having this dry, warm weather means we often stay in the sun a little too long, so whether you are working or playing in it, I hope you're keeping safe, and taking precautions for yourself and children. Hats, umbrellas, sun screen and shade are great ways to ward off the bad part while still enjoying the wonderful sunshine and soaking up some great Vitamin D. As we all know, this wonderful weather can't last forever,...

  • Weekend packed full with events

GORGEOUS--Well, as this week began, there was nothing but blue sky all day long with perfect temperatures for working in the yard or just sitting outside and taking it all in. So nice! Of course, if you happened to have been downwind from any big trees, you would have had the unfortunate timing of a pollen bath, as it was coming off the trees in virtual waves. Sort of neat to witness, but if you're allergy prone, it was time to run and hide in the house! Did you see the "super moon" Saturday night? I only saw it briefly as it slipped between a...

SO-SO--Last weekend promised to bring some sunshine to our area but after a brief amount on Saturday morning, the clouds took over and it was rather gloomy all day. However, it was dry, so that was something. Sunday saw some brief sun breaks but by nightfall and Monday morning, it was nothing but rain, so if things clear up by the end of the week, I'm sure everyone will be happy. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 3-9 are Rosie Hicks, Maria Snow, Connor Emlen-Petterson, Tami Bosch, Lori Parke, Stephanie Moonen, Stan Thacker,...

MONTH'S END--This month is about to end; how is that possible? It seems it just started! I can't tell you how alarmed I am by the seemingly furious pace as to which the days are flying by. It won't be long and the kids will be out of school and summer will be in full swing! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 26-May 2 are Debbie McClain, Kelly McClain, Shannon McClain, Connie Luthi, Ricky Montgomery, Sweet Pea Snow, Robert Meyer, Anita Hoven, Wolfgang Hoven, Carol Danker, Jennifer Emery, Wally Wright, Stan Woody Jr., Marcia...

EVERYTHING--Last week was full of rain, hail, sleet, thunder, wind and sunshine and warmth; a typical spring mix! As long as the list doesn't include earthquakes and tsunamis, tornadoes or hurricanes, we'd better count our blessings! I received a picture of a funnel cloud near Wauna, from the wild weather we had last Thursday, but luckily it didn't build into anything serious! NICE WEEKEND--Easter weekend was certainly a nice one for all those traveling or enjoying the Easter egg hunts, although we did start Saturday morning in West Valley with a layer of thick, white frost and temps in the upper 20s. Thankfully, the sun was shining and it was soon much warmer and I think everyone's spirits perked right up as the day went along. I know the lawn mowers were kept busy. As this work week began, it was still warm, albeit cloudy, but while it was dry, we were scurrying around trying to get as much done outside as...

WET AND COLD--As the weekend ended, there was still plenty of rain falling and even some snow. A light layer of snow was visible on the hills towards East Valley. The work week began with a bit of a break and everyone was thoroughly enjoying that sunny, dry, although rather blustery Monday. However, it didn't last as Tuesday morning is nothing but raindrops. The forecasters say we'll have a few wet days and then our Easter weekend should be a nice one and temperatures could even reach the 70s. One can always hope! EASTER DOINGS--Speaking of...

NICE WEEKEND--I saw plenty of smiling faces and heard lots of lawn mowers as last weekend brought some much needed sun and warmth after cold temperatures and snowy conditions lingered here way too long! Let's hope we see more days like those as Spring blossoms, but I understand the outlook for most of this week is wet with some drying periods by the weekend, so we'll take what nice weather we can get I guess. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 29-April 4 are Aaliyah Montgomery, Leif Carroll, Mike Carroll, Linda McClain, Dana...

WHITE STUFF--As this week begins, and with Spring just a couple of days away, I am seeing white stuff in the sky as it lazily floats down and covers the hills with yet another layer of snow; oh, say it isn't so!! I hope this will be the last of such occurrences as I feel chilled to the bone and cannot soak in a warm tub of water forever, so here's to Spring and warmer weather! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 22 to 28 are Sharyl Hjaltalin, Sig Hjaltalin, Nova McNally, Makenzie Anderson, Emily Tanksley, Hans York, David Whitn...

BRRR--As I begin this column, we've got snow mixed with rain and temps in the 30s so it's definitely much colder than the end of last week. At least when we see snow falling, we know it's cold and don't get fooled into thinking it's nicer than it really is. As I wrap up this week's column, the snow is really coming down but with a little luck, by the time you read this, the snow will be over and done with for the year! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 15-21 are Connie Bassi, Lucy Bosch, Randy Hoven, Pat Kehrli, Carol...

NOT SO SUNNY--Well, as this week begins, I think everyone was looking forward to the forecasted nice day on Sunday, which we assumed meant some sunshine, but as I begin this column, so far we have only seen cloudy weather out here in West Valley and no hint of sunshine at all. Of course, it's not raining, so I guess dry will have to do. However, as I am adding to this on Monday evening, we're getting a light layer of snow coming down, so obviously winter is not going to be leaving before its time is due. Think Spring, which starts March 20! We...

PRETTY WET--As this calendar week began, Sunday was a nice dry day, but Monday was quite soggy. From the sounds of it, most of the week is due to be wet, so I hope you've kept the boots and umbrellas handy. We can only hope the forecasters are mistaken and things turn out drier than they think they are going to be, as that would be the kind of weather error we'd like! It sounds like snow levels are dropping as well, so if you're headed to the mountains or have to go over a pass, be sure to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. After the...

  • Jack’s Place brings back Puget Island memories

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 22, 2012

Thanks to Ralph Keyser, we've got another great picture and information on yet another gas station that was located on Puget Island: Jack's Place, or maybe you knew it as Jack Maughan's Place. Officially however, it was Jack's Place named after John William Maughan, who was known as Jack. This place was located along what is now SR 409 in the 650-660 address, which is just north of the State Road intersection. This was on the west side of the road and if you were around my age, you may know it as being south of where the Lawsons lived and...

NOT BAD--We haven't had a lot of sunshine this past week but I guess we should be thankful for the cloudy, drizzly days we have, it could be a lot worse! Our Valentine's Day is not only a little soggy, but there's also snow showing up off and on out here in West Valley--yikes! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from February 16-22 are Vickie Reid, Chuck Parker, Betty Brown, Brody Brown, Melody Brown, Selah Hoven, Christa Hoven, Tiffany Montgomery, Sara Buennagel, Jennifer Quigley, Kristan Quigley, Rebecca Castillo, Terry Everman, Stan...

  • Valentine Dinner this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 9, 2012

BEEN NICE--I think the last part of last week and the weekend were definitely mood boosters, as the sun was shining and the birds were chirping and some flowers, like my snowdrops were blooming and it was just great to see the sunshine for more than a day at a time, so it was most enjoyable for sure! I guess I could have done without the wind, which made things a little chillier, but hey, at least we weren't wading through flood waters or digging out of snowbanks like some of the rest of the country was doing. If you happened to be up late on...

ONCE AGAIN--It seems like only yesterday we were beginning the first month of a new year, but lo and behold, here we are in the second month already. So, how are you doing with those new year resolutions? I hope you're having better luck than me, as it seems the snow, the freezing, the rain and a bug have slowed me down and I've just been spinning my wheels when it comes to plans that need to be worked on, but hopefully I'll kick things in high gear this month or at least that's my newest resolution if I ever get to feeling better! While we...

DOMINATING WEATHER--Once again the weather has been the dominant source of conversation as the snow began to melt, the lowland areas began to flood and the wind began to howl, which meant trees were coming down, slides were happening here and there and power outages also happened. By the time our neighbors to the south got hammered with most of the rain, and our neighbors to the north were dealing with a batch of snow and freezing rain, we were actually sitting in a pretty good spot by comparison. I have to admit, I'm ready for winter to be...
