  • Drive carefully while celebrating New Year

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 3, 2013

NEW YEAR--Here it is: My first column of a new year and onto my 19th year to boot. It seems like yesterday! What a year this has been and with never a dull moment. I guess that's why it went by so fast. Once again we had early deadlines this week, so I do hope your New Year's Eve was a fun one! As 2012 was coming to a close, we wound up having freezing weather and very thick fog out here in West Valley on Sunday and Monday mornings, so while I enjoyed the sunshine that showed up once the fog lifted, the nippy nighttime temperatures and snow in...

  • Enjoy family time this Christmas season

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 27, 2012

OFF AND ON--Our weather has been a combination of wet, dry, rainy, snowy, calm, windy and everything else this past week. Forecasters say we may even see a white Christmas. Now wouldn't that be something? Since we are turning our columns in extra early this week, I don't have any idea what showed up for the big holiday, nor was I able to gather any news about anyone's Christmas gatherings. That will all have to wait until next week. All I know is that it was slushy the other day and a few flakes even fell in West Valley before turning to rain,...

  • Enjoy family time this holiday season

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 20, 2012

NOT SO NICE--We had some cold, windy, nasty weather these last few days. It brought several inches of snow up on Beaver Creek and the surrounding hills and some thick rain down here on the valley floor, along with heavy hail to boot. On Sunday night, I could hear that freight train sound coming and that's usually not a good thing to hear! Sure enough, after the last whoosh went through at 2:04 a.m., there went the power! A tree had fallen on the power lines, Thankfully, a PUD crew came out and restored power to us by 3:45 a.m. Thanks for the...

  • Dinner at Grange rousing success

DAMP—It was pretty dreary out there with steady drizzle as this week began. Sunday was a good day to stay inside! It was foggy here Monday morning but at least we had some dry time and even a peek at sunshine. With winter closing in on us, I’m thankful for any days that it's not freezing, snowing, or flooding. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this week are Tom Bosch, Paul Stewart, Melainie Quigley, Angel Hall, John Lindsey, Erik Anderson, Riley Brown, Joyce Cothren, Sandy Bergseng, Dennis Emery, Tracie Souvenir, Abby B...

WET AND WILD--The last few days have been nothing but wet and at times, more like a monsoon weather rather than just plain old Skamokawa rain. It’s been horrific at times! New rivers have carved themselves into my driveway. My field is once again a lake, which only the ducks and geese seem to enjoy. With a rainy week forecast, I hope we stay afloat. Holiday crunch time is upon us, and we don't need any flooding! As I finish this up, it's blowing and nasty out. I hope we all keep our power as I'm pretty sure the ladies are in cookie making...

  • Many holiday happenings ahead

DECENT--It was nice to see some dry weather last weekend after the downpours we experienced previously. It seems our county had its share of flooding, rock slides and miserable conditions last week to deal with, so a spurt of sunshine and fair weather was a welcome relief. On Monday morning our temperatures in West Valley were down in the 20s and things were frosty white. It looks like winter is coming, so we can't be too fooled by the sunshine of the day. Of course, that's not supposed to last long with things warming up and rains returning....

  • Share the bounty this Thanksgiving

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 22, 2012

WET & BREEZY--The weather forecasters said we might get some nasty weather and by golly, it did get quite blustery wet, so it was a good weekend to sit by the fire for sure. I'm not sure if you had the thunder at your house, but in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it absolutely roared, crashed and banged out here in West Valley. It looks to be a soggy Thanksgiving holiday as well, so I hope all of you that are traveling the roadways are turning those lights on, slowing down in the rain and arriving at your destination all safe and sound! As a...

SOAKED--Well, I hope you enjoyed the first half of this past weekends' weather, as it sure was nice compared to what showed up on Sunday. It just poured and blew and by Monday morning, Chamberlain Lake has arrived yet once again. I understand that we have a dry day coming our way and I'm sure we'd all like to be taking advantage of that when it shows up, as with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up on us, we've got lots to do. BINGO TOMORROW NIGHT--Tomorrow night, (Friday) is Turkey Bingo time once again, as the Wahkiakum Fair Board hosts this...

IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED--This announcement is going out to the people who have yet to cash their fair premium checks: It is with utmost urgency that you cash them immediately or you will be unable to do so and you will forfeit your money. The amount of your uncashed check will then be returned to the fair coffers and your donation will be most appreciated. However, with the holidays coming up, I'm sure most of you would like a little extra spending money and so your well-deserved premium check might just help you out about now but if you don't...

REALLY WET--It seems like only yesterday we were talking about how long of a dry spell we'd had and how we could use a little rain to help dampen the forests to keep the guys in the woods working, or to keep the fire danger down and to get our lawns green again and our wells full, but holy cow, has that all changed! We've had gully washers coming down this past weekend and now our once parched fields are lakes again! Of course, we aren't experiencing anything like they are back East and so as hurricane Sandy hits the East coast, we are sending...

  • Get your costumes ready for Halloween

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 25, 2012

WET BEGINNING--Well, as this week began, it was pretty damp out there. Some places wound up with hail, while others had none, so it really depended on where you were as to whether you had gully washers at your house or you had sunshine! In the mountains, snow was falling and Monday's temperatures had everyone feeling the chill, so it seems our extended summer weather has finally come to an end. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating their birthdays from October 25-31 are: Valle Ledtke, Jennifer Hall, Hoby Thacker, Mike Wright, Christie Davis, Mel...

  • Spaghetti dinner to help local couple

WET AT LAST--Well, we wanted the rain, and we needed the rain and we got the rain, but we also got some winds with it, which we could have done without, but it's that time of year when we can expect these kinds of storms. Of course, this is not to say that we like them as after just a couple of days, I think we were missing all that sunshine we had. However, I think I could hear the field in front of my house going "glug, glug, glug" as it soaked up that rain and within just a couple of days, I had a nice fresh batch of green grass out there,...

  • Think of donating food this harvest time

STILL HOLDING--Well, as I begin to write this, our good weather is still holding on, although the night times out here in West Valley sure took a nose dive, as last Wednesday morning we woke up to a frozen world; hadn't thought it would get that cold! Since then other areas have felt the chill as well, so while our dry days are still here for now, it looks like cooler and wetter times are coming our way and with the clouds this Tuesday morning, it looks to be coming soon. While we need the rain, I'm hoping we don't get pounded right off the...

  • Nice weather is time to get winter ready

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 4, 2012

STILL NICE--It's hard to believe that we're into October already and we're still experiencing sunny skies and just gorgeous weather, rather than the rain that most of us expect this time of year. If you haven't gotten those outdoor chores done yet, well, you sure can't use the weather as an excuse except to say that you were too busy having fun in the sun to do all that winter prep work, and who could blame you? We don't often get long dry stretches like this during these Fall months, so it's hard to buckle down and think about nasty weather...

  • Fall means time for Country Days festival

END OF ANOTHER MONTH--Well, as you can see, we're in the countdown of yet another month with a new one beginning on Monday; seems impossible but yet, October is on its way. Can you feel the nip in the air? Well, we'd better be enjoying Fall as the next thing you know, it'll be Winter, so hustle with those chores and get yourself ready for some short days and long nights! SPECIAL DAYS--Celebrating their birthdays from September 27 through October 3 are Sue Kuller, Matthew Keilwitz, Stewart Moonen, Ginger Schmitz, Stevan Morgain, Marie West,...

TIME'S FLYING--Well, as you can see by the date, time is flying by super fast and we're already heading into our fourth week of the month. Where has the time gone and won't it please slow down? I think that ever since I was sick, I've been behind and cannot seem to get caught up on all the things I know that need doing before our rains come and don't leave. To top it all off, Autumn officially starts this Saturday, so say farewell to Summer. Let's hope for an Indian Summer and I'd say from the little heat wave of last weekend, we're headed in...

TRANSITION WEEKEND--Well, last week was pretty toasty around here as temperatures were up in the 90s last Friday. However, on the coast it was much cooler that day and we got some of their cloud cover the first half of Saturday. Then the wind picked up and we cleared off quite a bit by afternoon and saw the sunshine and it was nice again. However, by late afternoon it was another story, as that wind came back up and nothing but dark clouds covered us by early evening. Needless to say, the rain that I saw on Sunday morning was no surprise and...

  • Plans underway for 2016 reunion

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 6, 2012

NICE HOLIDAY--Well, if you didn't have a great Labor Day weekend/holiday, it certainly couldn't have been due to the weather as it was pretty doggone nice. We had some clouds, some sun, and some wind but no rain, so hey, that's a big plus for those who were out there camping or enjoying one of the many activities that went on this weekend, there was lots to do! From the looks of the traffic on SR 4, there seemed to be a whole lot of people who were headed west to enjoy their time at the coast and possibly take in one last fling before school...

  • Are you prepared for any emergency?

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 30, 2012

DAMP--As this week begins and the weekend ends, we're seeing some dampness out here in West Valley, which was definitely not in the forecast at least not for a couple more days. However, I'm sure all my plants and my poor dry lawn were happy to see the light misty stuff come down and give it a little drink. All of us on springs and wells were happy too, as every little bit helps after a long dry spell. On Monday morning the fog made for some heavy dew, but parts of my driveway were already dry by noon. This little spattering of rain isn't...

  • Good time had by all at the fair

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

CLOUDY START--As this work week begins, it's pretty doggone cloudy out here in West Valley this morning, but it's not all that cold, so it's just right for this non-sun lover! It's pleasant enough to be outside in, but not hot and the wind's not blowing, so it's not nippy, so one of my personally preferred, perfect days! According to the weather folk, it seems the cloudy morning, sunny afternoon routine will continue throughout the week and they say there is no rain in the forecast, although it is certainly very dark out there this Tuesday...

  • Lots of events this Fair weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

STILL HOT--Well, as this week begins and the weekend ends, it's still plenty toasty out there and I hope you are all being extremely careful about how much heat and sun you're taking in. Of course, it goes without saying that nobody should be left inside a car during these heat waves, as even with the windows down, there is no way a person or an animal can survive, so if you see someone's pet inside a vehicle or worse yet, a person, notify authorities immediately. If you have outdoor animals, make sure they have access to water and some shade...

  • All School reunion a huge success

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 9, 2012

HOT ONE--Holy cow, we finally had Summer show up with a real vengeance this past weekend and wouldn't you know, the hottest day just happened to be on Saturday when our all-school reunion took place, whew, it was hot! Rarely do we have a day that hot, let alone one with no wind to boot, so while those on the water were sailing along on a river that looked like a sheet of glass, the lack of a breeze just about cooked the rest of us. Sunday was much better with lower temps and a good breeze, so while it was still plenty sunny, it wasn't nearly as...

  • Mule Train All School Reunion finally here

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 2, 2012

SO-SO--Well, as this work week began, we've had some clouds and a bit of mist here and there, along with a few lighter clouds which gave us the warm and muggy feeling as well, but is just depended on where you were as to whether you were cloudy and cool, or cloudy and warm. Over the weekend we were just happy to have dry weather and it was pretty warm in spite of some clouds off and on. THIS IS IT--Yes indeed, the time has come for the first ever Mule Train All-School Reunion this Saturday. Now the event was advertised as noon to 5 p.m. but...

  • Head to Vista Park for Vendor's Market

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

WET--As this work week begins, it's a little more than damp outside in the morning hours, and not exactly the summer type weather we were wishing we'd have by this time of year. We do seem to be getting some breaks by afternoon though, so the day isn't totally a wash! On the bright side, we don't have to worry about forest fires like they do in other states and out here in the valleys, we know our water systems will keep chugging along, so that that's the good part about seeing some of this wet stuff. For hay makers, it's been tough as the...

  • Enjoy lots of events at Bald Eagle Days

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 19, 2012

MIXED BAG--Well, this past week we've had some great sunny days, with nice warm temperatures, but we've also had some cloudy, windy days along with showers that fell on Sunday morning. Not what hay makers were wanting to see for sure! The super warm day on Monday gave the hay makers some hope to get things done, but a cloudy Tuesday morning was making them uneasy once again. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 19-25 are Rick Benfit, Bev Moonen, Al McClain, Stuart Bosch, Randy Montgomery, Lesley Horman, Suzet Parker, Brian...
