NICE HOLIDAY--I hope you had a nice Fourth of July holiday as we certainly had some good weather for it. As I begin this week's column, it sounds like we'll have been in a bit of a "heat wave" this week, so I hope you've been using sunscreen and limiting your time in the sun so you don't start out your summer with a nasty burn. It goes without saying that you need to stay hydrated and if you're one of those people with a four legged friend with you, do be careful about keeping them out in the sun too long and making sure they get cooled down...
GETTING BETTER-- As I began this column, the weather wasn't so great but by the evening hours, it dried up and it wasn't too bad. However, the forecasters are predicting some very nice weather for this week, with a real toasty day on Tuesday, but nice throughout the week, so by the time the Fourth of July rolls around it should be just right for barbecues, fireworks and all the holiday doings. T'WAS GREAT--I hope you enjoyed the first weekend of Summer, as most people gave it an A-plus. It was sunny and beautiful and was everything most folks hope for in the way of Summer weather! NOT SO GREAT--As this work week begins, it's a little bit wet out there, and at times, it really pours. At least there were a few breaks in the weather, but they were pretty short lived. They say drier weather is coming, so by the time you read this, you may be enjoying a very nice, dry day again. Let's hope so! Another thing that is not so great, is the fact that the internet was down all over the place. It's amazing how dependent we get on our computers for gathering information and sending communications, so when it's out, it's a huge mess....
GREAT WEATHER--We certainly can’t complain about the weather this past week as it's been nothing but gorgeous. SO SO--If you were one of those folks who went camping this Memorial holiday, I do hope you didn't get too soaked, as often times it was just a little bit on the wet side around here. Of course, while we were having rain, it was sunny and dry in Portland, so maybe you got lucky and went to an area where it was a little bit drier than we were, as it seemed to differ every 10 or 20 miles. GETTING BETTER--Our weekend saw us getting pretty soaked from time to time but during the afternoon hours, we had some pretty decent dry spells, so it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. This past Sunday, the Wahkiakum High School basketball coaches held their annual banquet to honor the various team players and to say goodbye to the senior players who were just outstanding this year. Coach Bill Olsen and Assistant Coach Todd Souvenir agreed that these young men were just the easiest group of players to coach and were proud of each of them. OFF AND ON--As this work week begins, it's been an off and on day for rain and sunshine, as it depends on where you were and at what time of the day you were there as to whether or not you were steaming in your car or pulling the hood up on your coat to keep from getting wet. MIXED WEATHER--Folks went to bed last Wednesday night with a little standing water but by Thursday morning, it was overflowing everywhere with some driveways underwater and the high streams running a mucky brown color. MIXED BAG--Last Friday was an absolutely gorgeous day which brought out the lawn mowers, the tank tops and flip flops and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. NICE START--As this work week begins, it is simply gorgeous outside. NICE BEGINNING--I was a bit surprised to see a sunny day last Sunday, as the forecast had looked pretty wet, so after a super soggy Saturday, the blue sky and sunshine was truly welcomed. SOGGY BEGINNING--As this week begins, it's pretty doggone wet once again. We did have a couple of dry days last week though, so those were nice and we even got the lawn mowed, while some got their new plants planted, along with a few other outdoor chores. With forecasters disagreeing on just how wet we're going to be this week, I'm hoping that the one who says we're going to dry out for the weekend, is the right one! WET AND WILD--We sure had a couple of days last week that were opposite of each other, as Friday was gorgeous and we were running around in shirt sleeves, while it was nothing but rain and wind on Saturday. By Sunday morning, the water was just going over the edges of West Valley road, so we're glad it let up when it did. As of this writing, many "lakes" are still visible as the ground is so saturated that it's not going anywhere too fast, so we'll hope for clearer skies this coming week as promised so that we get to see our "green" again!...
STORMY--It sure depended on where you were as to how good or bad it was last week. Last Friday was gorgeous here while Portland was dealing with a lot of rain. Those in the eastern part of the Columbia Gorge felt a winter blast with horrific thick, icy road conditions, while just west of Multnomah Falls, it was just wet. Last Monday it was blowing and raining here in West Valley, while it was sunny and warm in Longview, so if you travelled less than an hour in just about any direction, you were likely to find a different batch of weather....
NOT BAD--Well, after a couple of freezing nights, we're back to a drippy kind of week, which isn't too bad, as once again, we're better off than a lot of other places in the states, so we'll count our blessings. DINNER UPDATE-- Last Saturday night, the Wahkiakum Fair Board had perfect weather in which to hold their belated Valentine Diamond Dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, so with no snow, no rain and no wind, grill masters, Blair Brady and Bill Coons once again served up some terrific steaks and portabella mushrooms for the diners. MIXED BAG--It's been a week of this and that for weather, as one day it's pretty dry and the next it's blowing sideways and coming down in buckets. Needless to say, when you saw the sun peek out for a few minutes, you used that opportunity to fix the leaky gutter, take out the trash or anything else that needed to be done outside, so you didn't get soaked when the "switch got flipped," as when it came down, it was nasty out there! IT'S SNOW TIME!--This past week brought us a whole lot of extremely cold weather and "white" around our area as well. The snow amounts were not nearly as bad as places in Oregon, but there was enough that it certainly did mess up a lot of plans, so a lot of scheduled events had to be cancelled. From school closures to sports events, to pie socials, to Bingo and the Wahkiakum Fair Board's big Valentine Dinner and more, it was a weekend of cancellations and huge disappointments by those that work so hard to plan, clean and shop and get ready for...
CRISPY--Monday morning of this week saw a few snow flakes falling around our house but it didn't stick around long, but on Tuesday morning, the frost is so thick that it looks like it snowed, and I was told a few flakes actually showed up in a couple of places. At any rate, it looks like our arctic blast has arrived and by the time you read this, we'll supposedly have plummeted into the teens, so I do hope you've all taken the necessary precautions so as not to freeze up, as the high temperatures during the day weren't supposed to get above...
BRR--I know I shouldn't complain about the cold mornings considering the eastern half of the United States is being hammered with snow and ice and minus temperatures, but hey, it's still cold, which is definitely reflected in the ole power bill! Of course, once the ole sunshine comes out, it's half-way decent out there, especially Friday, as it was almost balmy for January! The bad part about all of this, is that it is so dry, we are officially in a drought which certainly is rare for us this time of year. I guess this rain we're having now...
