NOT ALL THAT GREAT--If you lived out in West Valley, you would have found a good deal of your holiday weekend cloudy and drizzly and not quite what we hoped for or expected. While some were enjoying drier conditions and temps in the 60s, my thermometer was reading about 10 degrees cooler, so it was definitely jacket time here on Friday and Saturday. Luckily, it cleared up a little bit more on Monday, and temperatures were mild, so the whole weekend wasn't totally nasty but certainly not the best either. Considering the flooding and tornadoes...
ALL MIXED UP--We had some sunshine, some showers and some wind last week and weekend, so it really depended on where you were as to what you were dealing with. At least we weren't dealing with the wild weather that parts of Oregon got, as it hailed and rained so hard and so much and so fast, that heavy manhole covers were coming up in mid-street; that was a pretty wild sight! It's hard to believe but we'll be having another big holiday weekend coming up. Forecasters are saying the weather for the Memorial Day holiday looks promising but as...
GREAT DAYS--We had a great batch of sunny, dry days for Mother's Day weekend and from all the pictures I saw and things I read, it looked like everyone was enjoying them fully. Who would have guessed that we would be sitting in 80 degree weather in early May? This week we're seeing some raindrops but if all goes well, we'll be seeing a decent weekend. Around here, the forecast can change in a heartbeat, so who knows? Considering the tornadoes, snow, flash flooding and earthquakes in other areas, we have no reason to be complaining. Our thoughts...
BEEN SUPER--I think most of us would agree that it was a terrific weekend weather-wise and with so many things to do beginning with several "grand openings" last week, it was nice to enjoy them in the sunshine. Looks like we'll have a little damp weather earlier in the week, but by the time you read this we're supposed to be drying out and have another great weekend, so I'm sure we're all looking forward to that as we'd like the sun to be shining for the special weekend coming up. MOTHER'S DAY--As I said above, there's a special weekend coming...
MIX OF WEATHER--One thing about last weekend's weather, if you didn't like it one minute, it seemed to change the next, at least down this way! It was pouring in West Valley when I left our house on Saturday, but just two miles east, it was sunny and warm and I felt sort of silly in my coat and hat! It was cloudy all day Sunday here, with showers coming and going, so while it wasn't super nice, it was pretty good weather to work in as it certainly kept you from working up a sweat! However, by late afternoon, it was just plain wet, so it was...
BEEN NICE--I hope you were able to take advantage of the nice weather we had last weekend as it was prime time for traveling to the beach or working in the yard. It seems there were tractors and mowers running everywhere, so I know many folks were extremely busy. With the warmer weather comes the reminder about not leaving animals or children in your vehicles as even 70 to 75 degree temperatures can be lethal for them. We also need to remind ourselves to start slathering on the sun screen. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April...
MIXED WEATHER--Last weekend was a mixture of sun, rain, wind and even some hail thrown in. Some got more sun than others so I guess it depended on where you were. By the time you read this we're supposed to all be basking in a string of sunny days and warm temperatures. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 16-22 are Logan Britt, Dan Keilwitz, Brock Cothren, Max Schmitz, Lori Smith, Reggie Bonny, Leota Souvenir, Mike Brown, Jack Burdick, Darci Francis, Nancy Granger, Jeri Pierce, Rochelle Stensland, Eric Bergseng, Cleave Hedman,...
A VARIETY--This week began with Easter Sunday and I trust you had a good one. We began the day with temperatures at freezing and a whole lot of fog, but it wound up super nice during the day, which lent itself to sitting on the patio and enjoying the sun. By late afternoon, early evening, the weather took a dramatic shift and it soon began to blow and then the dark clouds moved in and the rains began to pelt down in wild fury, so it was a real mixed bag of weather all in one day! It looks like we'll have some rain and some sun this week as well...
ONCE AGAIN--It seems like I just said we were heading into March but here I am, saying we're already into April; hard to believe! The last weekend in March started out a bit wet but thankfully the sun arrived and made all the raindrops sparkle on the lawn, which we fortunately got cut on one of the dry days we had last week! We started this work week with some low clouds but also some sunshine by noon, so it didn't begin too badly, but by the time you read this, I hear we're going to be back to umbrella weather, so all those pretty Easter...
OFF AND ON--The first day of Spring saw the skies "springing a leak" after several wonderfully warm days. The weekend started out with pounding rains which made the TV signal go out at times, so it was not a nice start to the day. However, it did wind up improving as the day went by. It was back to the wind and rain on Sunday morning, but once again, it turned out decent so folks were still out in their flower beds and staying busy. I hear we'll be basking in a couple of full days of sunshine by the time you read this, so let's hope the...
NICE/NASTY/NICE--At the end of last week we had a couple of really nice summer-like days and folks were out in shorts and tank tops and mowing their lawns and really soaking up the nice weather. Then the weekend showed up, along with the "Pineapple Express" and we had some heavy rains and breezy condtions, but a quick trip to Longview on Sunday had us sitting in sunshine, while the trip home became darker and darker the further west we came and we got back into the wind and the rain. While thousands were without power in other nearby areas on...
GORGEOUS--Wow, has this past week been great or what? The days were full of sunshine and the temperatures were up in the mid-60's and even got to 70 one day, so it has been wonderful, except for the fact that it made us start our spring chores a little sooner than I was hoping. No time to relax when there's things to do, like yard work! By the time you read this we are supposed to be back to some rainy days, so maybe I'll get to kick back and read that book I'd planned on reading during the "dreary winter days," which we just haven't had many...
NICE START--As this third month of the new year started, it was pretty doggone nice last Sunday, after a nice day on Saturday to end February as well, so we had a nice weekend after a pretty drippy day on Friday. However, as the skies cleared and the stars came out Saturday night, the temperature gauge dropped below freezing once again, so it was a nippy evening. They say we may have a pretty decent week so we hope that's true as there's a lot of folks out there with the itch to take on some yard projects, etc., so we hope you've got your lawn...
WASN'T BAD--While the middle of last week got a bit cloudy and a little damp, it wasn't too bad and the weekend wound up turning out quite nice, so there were lawn mowers going and people showing pictures of flowers blooming and walking on the beach, etc., and I even managed to do a little weeding, so we were still enjoying much nicer weather than a lot of the rest of the country. As this work week began, the sun was still shining but that was after we thawed out, as temps were down in the 20's out this way so it was a frosty white world for...
GORGEOUS--Wow, have we had some nice "winter" weather or what? Last weekend was great and from what I hear, we should still be seeing sunshine by the time you read this, so we have been very fortunate. To top off those nice days, we've had some gorgeous sunsets as well; totally breathtaking! For those of us out here in West Valley, we have been having night time and morning temperatures below freezing. But compared to the 7-8 feet of snow that has accumulated back east in the last three weeks, and temperatures down to 20 below zero, I will cert...
WET ENOUGH?--The end of last week was certainly a drenching and as this work week begins, it's pretty doggone wet too, but the break on Sunday at least allowed for some of the "lakes" to recede a bit, thankfully! For us, it's supposed to be all cleared up by the time you read this and they say we'll be in for a week or more of sunshine, with temperatures close to 60 degrees, so that sounds mighty good to me! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Feb. 12-18 are Vickie Reid, Chuck Parker, Derek Phipps, Connie Shrum, Dale Strueby, James...
DRY ENDING/WET BEGINNING/SB--As January came to an end, the sun was shining and it made for a perfect ending to the month. It was also perfect for those who stood in line waiting for the doors to open of Rosburg Hall where the folks who were hungry for crab and oysters were treated to another delicious feast. The oysters were just the right size and for the most part, were easy to open, and when you topped off the meal with a little dessert, well, it was a fantastic meal! Kudos to those who put the meal on and worked the event as well. It's alw...
NICE BEGINNING--As the week begins, our Sunday morning was nothing but socked in fog for quite some time, but by lunch time, we had some nice sunshine, so that was quite enjoyable. I understand many parts of the area had sunshine on Saturday as well, but out here in West Valley, we didn't see any of it as it was gray and gloomy all day, so those who were elsewhere were quite lucky. After a brief rainy period, forecasters say we'll be in for more dry weather as the first month of this new year comes to an end. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating bir...
NOT BAD--As this work week began, at least for some folks, it wasn't too bad, as the morning showers gave way to sunshine and my "lake" started to shrink after a weekend of heavy rains and nastiness at times. Several days of this week look to be dry, albeit with some heavy fog in the morning hours, so be sure to get those lights on and slow down a bit. I'll enjoy the dry days, but for those who are wishing to use that new ski gear or snowboards that they got for Christmas, I am sure that they are wishing that it would cool down and snow. I'm...
ANOTHER WEEK--By the looks of it, this year is going to fly by like the last one. We have spent this past week in a virtual fog as both evenings and mornings were thick with the stuff, at least down this way. Our soggy fields seem to "grow" the fog and there were only hours between the morning fog and the evening fog, as most of the time, the evening fog was showing up in the late afternoon, so we were "in a fog" most of the time. The dangerous part of that was that the deer and elk seemed to be using it as a time to cross the roadways, which...
END/BEGINNING--Here we are on the last day of 2014; New Year's Eve; can you believe it?! This winds up being my last column in 2014 and my first in 2015, so we're ending a speedy year and I'm hoping we're beginning a slower one, as time seems to be passing by all too fast these days. We've got a cold snap coming our way, so I hope you're all prepared and are extra careful while out driving. I hope we come through this latest deep freeze unscathed. Don't forget your outside critters as well. When it's super cold, they need shelter and extra...
WET ENOUGHT?--I'm thinking that most of us got our fill of rain last weekend, as rivers and creeks rose and some of us were facing water over our roads or driveways under water, so it's one of those times which, if we only have a car, we find ourselves house-bound for a short period of time. There were even some areas that a truck didn't matter, you just weren't going through that deep of water. Luckily, it doesn't usually last that long, although high tides did hinder that a bit this time. At any rate, we were inconvenienced but high and dry...
CALMER--After last week ended with such windy, wild weather, we can only hope that this week is a bit quieter and calmer, as falling trees and power outages are not something we want to endure again. Many of us were lucky and kept our power on in spite of several power "bumps" but others on Puget Island or in the Cathlamet or west of here, endured some outages. The road to Longview was littered with limbs and one can see the extensive damage to the guardrails as large trees came down and blocked the road and got the guardrails on both sides of...
CHANGES--We've gone from freezing temperatures to warmer ones, but with that comes the rain. As we begin this week, it wasn't too bad but they say in the next few days we're going to get quite a bit of it, so by the time you read this, you'll be sure to have the umbrellas out and the boots on. The tides have been very high so I hope that doesn't mean we'll be dealing with some flooding issues in our area, but with heavy rains due, it wouldn't hurt to be vigilant if you're in a low-lying area. SPECIAL DAYS--Those having birthdays from Dec. 11-17...
CLEAR AND CRISP--I hope you're all weathering the freezing temperatures that we've been having lately, as it's definitely been crispy out there! If you're out here in the sticks like we are, I hope you've been able to keep your water running and haven't frozen up, as the sun can fool a person into thinking it's warmer out there than it really is; not to mention, some shady parts where water systems are often located, never get thawed out at all, so it's easy to forget to leave the water running and then, oops, you're froze! With temperatures in...
