PRETTY NICE--Last weekend was Mother's Day weekend and while Sunday wasn't as warm and toasty as Saturday, it was still pretty nice later on in the day as the winds blew the cloudiness away and we saw the sun again in the afternoon. I have to admit, the air was much nippier by late afternoon, but hey, it wasn't pouring down rain, so that was a blessing. Mid-week we are to see some pretty toasty temperatures but it looks like we may have to bring out the umbrellas for the weekend. Sadly, our neighbors to the north in Alberta, Canada are dealing...
WONDERFUL WEEKEND--We certainly had a gorgeous weekend with lots of sunshine and warmth, which was perfect to bring in another new month, so I hope you had a wonderful May Day on Sunday. Hopefully you got a nice flower surprise in there as well! As I begin this, it's a great day as the work week begins, but some showers are in the forecast for mid-week. The weekend looks to be nice again, so it'll be another great opportunity to either travel and enjoy the beach areas, or if you're like me, finish up some yardwork, which is really impossible as...
BIG CHANGE--Last weekend we saw clouds, rain, wind, hail and a dash of sun, so there was a little bit of everything! Oh well, you know what they say about April showers! I have to admit, many of my "May flowers" that had already bloomed and were in the last stages of showing off their flashy colors, were definitely done in after a heavy hail storm came through late Sunday afternoon and just pounded the blooms off my camelia, rhododendren and azalea bushes. HOT CAR WARNING--It was sunnier in some places last week than here and once again, we...
GREAT START--As this week began last Sunday, it was super nice, as were the couple of days prior to that. It was definitely great weather for heading to the beach and having fun in the sun, but I found doing yard work was just a bit much for me, as once it gets up there in those 80 degree marks, I'm hiding in the basement! The first couple of days this week were super toasty and in many places, records for those days were broken, and we were even warmer than Portland on Sunday evening. While we basked in the sunshine, other places like...
SUPER NICE--Last Thursday was certainly a toasty one as temperatures here hit the mid-80's which is pretty rare for us this time of year! While I'm sure the sun and heat lovers liked it, it was a bit too warm for me to be outside for very long, but if you were one of those who loved it, I hope you wore sun screen! By the time the weekend was over, it was back to some clouds and a brief amount of mist in certain places, so it was more my kind of weather. I know it was much better to do yardwork in, as it was much cooler and the sun wasn't...
GORGEOUS--Wow, have we had some great weather or what? I know we had some rain come down later in the day on Sunday and some on Monday, but prior to that and even after that, it was great! With temperatures due to reach up into the high 70s, and maybe even 80 by the time you read this, we'll be thinking it's more like summer than spring. Once again, we are enjoying wonderful weather while back in the northeast, they've been dealing with snow and wind and record cold, so we really feel for all those adversely affected in those areas; some of whi...
HALF NICE--Easter weekend may not have been completely nice, but most of Saturday was, so the Lions Club Easter Egg hunt didn't happen in the pouring down rain. Actually, it didn't start getting wet until evening time here, so it was a pretty good day, and with so many events taking place, it was great to not have to wear boots and slosh around through the puddles. Easter Sunday saw some sunshine too, but it was quickly wiped out by heavy rains and hail, at least here in West Valley, so it was one of those mixed up days! The upcoming weather...
SPRING HAS BEGUN--There were a couple of very nice days last week with plenty of sunshine to make us "drowned rats" feel a lot better and of course, give those avid lawn lovers a chance to head into their yards as it was perfect weather for mowing the lawn. Our actual first full day of Spring, which was last Sunday started out pretty wet though so I'm hoping that the weather forecast for a drier weekend actually winds up being true. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 24-30 are Sharyl Iblings, Makenzie Anderson, Vance Miller...
WILD BEGINNING--Last Sunday was forecast as a wet and windy one and by golly, early that morning, we started getting some pretty good gusts out here. I had hoped that our first day of losing an hour of sleep due to Daylight Savings Time would be relatively calm but no such luck, as my flying garbage can gave me an early wake up call! Rarely do we get wind that impacts our backyard area, so that took me by surprise. Later in the afternoon, we lost power, like most of the valleys in Skamokawa, which was due to a fallen tree out East Valley but af...
MIXED BAG--I no sooner turned in my news last week and the weather took a turn for the worse and got pretty wet and pretty windy and some areas wound up losing power, while others had trees coming down, but it really depended on where you were as to how bad it was. Some of the days that were forecast for being miserable, were actually half-way decent, meaning part of the day was dry and sunny, while the rains poured down later on, but that beat a whole day of nastiness, so that was fine with us. Considering the flooding going on in other parts...
NEW MONTH--Here we are in the third month of the year already; amazing! We had some mixed weather to end February as a couple of days last week were just gorgeous, with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures, while the last couple of days of the month were a bit wet and windy. I do hope you got to enjoy the nice part as it's not often that things are that great in February. With parts of the midwest and eastern states reeling from super cold temps and lots of snow, as well as some tornados in the southern states, we will count our blessings...
HALF NICE--Last weekend was one of those where you got one nice day to get all your outdoor chores done, and then when Sunday rolled around, it was time to be inside, as it really rained, at least here in West Valley. This was almost surprising as we were down to 28 degrees on Saturday night, so I was afraid we'd wake up to snow if the moisture fell then, but luckily it warmed up rather rapidly and it was just rain that hit about 9 a.m. Astoria however, was basking in much more sunshine than we were. Go figure! By the time you read this, we're...
WET START--As our big Valentine's Day arrived, so did the rain and boy, it didn't take long and all the fields around were "lakes" once again! Of course, between Saturday night at midnight and Sunday evening, we had two inches of rain out here, so it was no wonder we were seeing lakes materialize and grow before our eyes. Not only was it wet, but the fog-like clouds settled in real low and ship horns were blowing and visibilty was bad all over in the morning hours, so it wasn't nice. Throw in a mudslide on SR 4 between West Valley and...
DRIED UP--After a thunder storm last Friday night that brought pounding rain to our area, along with some breezy conditions, it was nice to have things start to dry up a bit, as I think we were all getting webbed feet from all the rain we've had. Here at our house, we had over 20 inches of rain for the month of January so it was definitely a wet beginning to our new year! This week began with lots of sunshine though and that meant getting outside and doing some of those chores before the next band of rain comes through, so I hope you managed th...
MIXTURE--At the end of last week, we saw wind, rain, heavier rain and hail, mixed up with dashes of sunshine and rainbows. It really depended on where you were at any given minute as to what you were experiencing, but it was enough to let us know that winter is still here so we should be ready for anything. I know one thing, we sure did enjoy the breaks of sunshine and the rainbows which accompanied that; the best! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Feb. 4-10 are Alyssa Montgomery, Bailey McKinley, KC Garrison, Kathy Tarabochia, Ed...
MIXTURE--While we had a mostly dry day last Friday, with only one fairly short burst of rain, it was definitely a drippy wet and gloomy Saturday morning around here. However, we saw quite a bit of sunshine Sunday and Monday, so that was quite nice. Considering there was a massive winter storm hitting the eastern part of the country, with record snowfall and blizzard conditions, we really couldn't complain much about our dampness at all. Besides the snow virtually closing down some cities and all public transportation, some areas along the coast...
WET--I hope you were able to stay in during all the wet weather we had recently. Of course, if you live or traveled just a little bit east of here, it was much drier at times, which always seems so strange to have such different weather within such a short distance. However, we had plenty of the wet stuff here in West Valley and the dampness it brings just makes it seem colder than it really is, so staying cozied up inside seemed like a great plan to me this past weekend. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Jan. 21-27 are Sharon...
CRISPY--As this week began, we were seeing sunshine along with very nippy temperatures as we're down in the 20's and it's white with frost which is sparkling in the sunshine, so while it's cool out, it's sure pretty. Of course, I talked to a few people who said they had the sunshine but no frost or freezing temperatures, but you know, I think we must be "special" out here in West Valley as we always seem to be colder than everybody else! By the time you read this, we're supposed to have warmed up and we might even see a good amount of rainfall,...
WHITE--We had a white Christmas in West Valley this past year, but that was only because it was foggy! Not just a little foggy, but it was super thick, white fog that greeted us that day and so that made it white. Then New Year's was white too, only this time it was due to a very heavy, thick frost that blanketed the area. Now as we enjoy the beginning of this week and the first Sunday of this new year 2016, we are seeing white once again, but this time, it's actually snow that is falling all around us and the roads, trees and grass are all...
THIS IS IT--Here we are, at the end of another year, and we will be saying goodbye to 2015 tonight! As I begin writing this column I can hardly believe this year is just about over! For those of you going out to celebrate the end of 2015 and welcome in 2016, we hope you have a fun time at your New Year's Eve celebration as well as a safe one! Forecasters, at this point in time, are predicting several nights of freezing temperatures so just in case they're right, be extra vigilant on these damp roadways, lest they be icy and super slick! Afteral...
WHITE OR NOT?--As this week began, we were enjoying a break from the miserable weather we'd been having, so we were all happy to see all the standing water begin to recede by Sunday evening. However, along came Monday and that enjoyment we had felt quickly subsided as a strong wind and rain event pounded many parts of our county and others. Trees were falling all over the place, from one county to the other, and that meant there were power outages and telephone outages as well. On Puget Island, one huge loss was the P.I. fire station which...
LESS INTENSE--As this work week begins, the weather is a little calmer than it has been, but then, it wouldn't take much considering last week was just totally wild! With flooded roads, a tornado in Battle Ground, local roads and highways closed from water or slides, plus major highways, like I-5 in Woodland closed due to a huge slide, and Hwy 12 closed indefinitely, plus many accidents that were water related, well, it was just a ridiculous, wild and crazy weather week. There were even sand bags used on Puget Island at some homes, so the...
WET ENOUGH?--I hope you are still afloat wherever you are, as we certainly have had some rain coming down, along with some blustery moments as well. I am thinking we should move the holiday season to summertime, as it seems we have to battle a ton of weather issues every year as we plan our gatherings, or cancel our gatherings, due to nasty weather events. Ok, I know that isn't going to happen, but as you travel to and fro to all the various family doings or community doings, be extra vigilante on the roadways, as standing water can yank your...
LAST MONTH--Here we are, the last month of the year, which seems impossible, but yet, here it is! Beings it's only 22 days until Christmas, I bet you're rushing around and getting that shopping done and getting all set for the big day. Of course, you savvy online shoppers just click a few buttons and have things delivered to your door, which certainly beats fighting all that traffic and long lines at the check out stands. But then, maybe you're like me and you like to browze around for that gift that's "just right" for that special person in...
COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Needless to say, this caused some extra angst just before the holiday weekend and made for some sleepless nights as we worked to keep water pipes from freezing and our homes nice and toasty!...
