  • Photography exhibit to open Sunday

SOGGY--As this week begins, it's a very soggy Sunday indeed. Saturday saw some breaks in the rain at least, but if you ask me, Sunday was just a good day to hunker down and stay put inside where it was nice and dry! The week looks to be fairly soggy until we possibly get a dry day on Friday, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that we can shed the rain gear and boots and soak in some sun rays as this third month of the year comes to an end; it's flying by! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 30-April 5 are Leif Carroll, Linda...

HALF AND HALF--Last Thursday was totally awesome, and that sunshine sure perked everybody up for awhile. It also meant it was time for me to get out there and get at those flower beds, which I truly felt the next day! Friday was a different story as it really rained at times. This past weekend we wound up having a wet beginning to things on Saturday, but then it got dry and very cold, as it was actually at freezing at my house, so I was so happy I hadn't purchased and planted any new plants just yet! Needless to say, we really enjoyed the...

NASTY START--This past weekend began with a miserable start, as it rained and then blew some, and rained again. Luckily, we had a real nice break on Sunday, and it was terrific to see the sun shining, the river glistening, and out here in West Valley, we even had some eagles flying around. Unfortunately, the rains returned all too soon and were to last all week, so I can hardly wait for our next sunny day, or preferably, days! IN OUR THOUGHTS--Former resident, Brittney Robbins Haddix is living in New York now and it's been bitter cold in her...

  • Lots of events set for this weekend

COLD SHOT--This past weekend we had another little cold spell, and yes, we did indeed see some snow falling but it didn't last too long down here. Beaver Creek had four new inches of snow by Sunday morning, so I was glad it was up there and not down here! However, I evidently gloated a little too soon, as we woke up to plenty of the white stuff on Monday morning down here in the lowlands, and it took turns between getting cold and coming down heavily and then warming up and doing nothing. There was widespread snow, from the coast and inland, so...

  • Lady Mules on great winning streak

MIXED BAG--As February came to an end, we've had some sun, some rain, some hail, some snow and some very cold temperatures, so we've had it all it seems! The snow we got last Thursday was a little more than many of us expected, but thankfully, it had stopped and was mostly gone by that night or next day. The nippy temperatures of Saturday morning made for icy puddles and slick conditions but the sun that was shining was certainly a welcome sight. That snow that fell in the very early hours of Sunday morning, which left us back in our winter won...

  • We may still see some winter weather events

CHANGES--I think all of us in this area could agree that last Friday, Feb. 17, was just a gorgeous day! It was a "get outside, take a walk, hoorah for the sunshine" kind of day; very nice! Of course, then came Saturday, and the clouds and drippy weather returned, but even that day looked good compared to Sunday, which was a real soaker! I am hearing that we are going to get cold again, which means more snow in the mountains and below freezing temperatures here, so I do hope you didn't plant too many things outside just yet, or they may not enjo...

MUCH DIFFERENT--This past weekend we saw some sunshine and much more pleasant conditions than the last one. No white stuff, yeah! It was nice to catch a break after all the snow and rain, which led to road closures and tons of trees coming down, so a huge relief there. Many parts of the county still have plenty of water standing around however, so I'm pretty sure they are not looking for the rains to return, which should be by the time you read this. Let's hope it's not much. As this work week begins however, it's clear skies and sunshine, but...

  • Redmen Hall to reopen March 4

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 9, 2017

NOT NICE--The weekend began with lots of rain and temps in the 40s, so when I went to bed on Saturday night to pouring rain and 45 degree temps, I didn't think much of it, other than I knew I'd wake up to a "lake" Sunday morning. Well, I did wake up to a "lake" in our field, but it was also surrounded by a whole lot of snow; yikes! The late night forecast said that snow would not be arriving until later Sunday, so that was off just a wee bit. With some folks getting three inches and others up to six, or even close to a foot, we were certainly h...

MILDER/THEN COLD?--We had a few days of warmer temperatures around here but still had some freezing mornings in West Valley, so it hasn't exactly been a heat wave! Still, it's certainly better than the massive flooding, snowfalls and freezing rain episodes that were happening in other parts of our country. I am hoping that my weather app is really wrong, as it says we could get a little more snow by the time you read this, but just in case it's right, take it easy out there! INTERNET WOES--It seems like whenever it's time to turn in my column,...

DAMP--This past weekend was a bit damp off and on and a little blustery too, but considering some areas were still dealing with snow and ice, and other parts of our nation suffered through a multitude of tornadoes and flooding, I'd say we fared pretty well. We cooled down Sunday night, so it was freezing here Monday morning, and it looks like we'll have those kind of tempertures just about every evening this week. However, I am enjoying this sunshine that showed up as the work week started, so I hope you did too. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...

FREEZING COLD/WET--From the sounds of it, many folks knew it was cold, as their power bills really took a leap this past month, and they were right as it's been down to 11 degrees here! After several nights of freezing tempertures, one just gets chilled to the bone! Of course, warming up also meant rain, and even that wasn't exactly warm, so one is still having to bring on the blankets, turn on the electric blankets and even break out the hot water bottles! However, considering what I've seen in other parts of the country, we are quite fortunat...

MISERABLE--It got mighty cold last week in our region and depending on where you live, you got an extreme cold, down to 11 degrees here, plus some snowy or some icy conditons, along with some bitter breezes, which made things even colder. Seeing just rain on Sunday morning was super welcoming, which seems hard to believe, but I was happy to hear the heater finally shut down for a bit as temperatures got up in the 40s; yeah! Of course, Monday morning had us back in a blanket of snow, and by the time you read this, they say we may be back to the...

  • Celebrate the new year responsibly

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 29, 2016

NOT BAD--If you were hanging around this area during Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the weather was quite co-operative, as it wasn't pouring, snowing, freezing or blowing, so I was pretty happy with the "just dreary looking" weather, as it wasn't a big factor in getting to "grandma's house" for dinner at least! Sure, it wasn't sunny and in the 70s like some of my classmates and friends were enjoying, but anytime I'm not dealing with snow or ice, well, then I think that's a real good deal! Now we just have to get through this next weekend,...

COLD ENOUGH?--By the time you read this, we are supposed to have warmed up a little bit; I sure hope so! With puddles staying frozen and the snow that fell turning into hard crunchy ice, and temps in the teens at night here in West Valley, I am more than ready for a warm up! Depending on what weather channel you watch, we can either have rain this week, or possibly more snow, which did show up on Monday, much to some's surprise! My app says more on Thursday but it's early yet, so I hope it changes! With multiple Christmas parties going on this...

  • More snow, ice may be coming our way

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 15, 2016

ROUND TWO--How did you make out during our little snow and freezing rain routine last week? I hope you weren't one of several who wound up in the ditch around here, as it only took about an hour of the white stuff coming down, and there was a call out, so let's hope you're slowing down and preparing yourself a little more for this second round of cold weather. By the time you read this, there is a possibility of more snow and/or icy conditions, so let's hope we slow down a little more, stay home if we don't have to be out and about, and then...

BRR--If you've been in our area, you will have noticed a ton of rain, and then, a big cool down and even some flakes of snow! Actually, enough snow to make it nice and white! I heard from a classmate who lives in Everett and he said it was snowing there on Sunday, so I was afraid we might get some when I saw those clouds rolling in on Sunday afternoon and the temperatures dropping lower and lower, so I guess it was no surprise. Still, more is predicted for the latter part of this week for several days with freezing temperatures to boot, so get...

  • November may set a rainfall record

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 1, 2016

GRAY & WET--As we ended November, I think we broke a record for being one of the wettest Thanksgivings here at our house ever, as we had 3.89 inches of rain that day! Although there were many areas who were seeing a soggy day, I don't think there were many who were seeing that kind of rainfall, lucky us! I am truly grateful that the power didn't go out and that we just dealt with the usual high water and field flooding but nothing that was extrodinarily bad. Curious as to our rainfall amount here for the year? Well, in our valley, we're up to...

THIS IS IT--It's that time of year when the kitchen is really bustling, as things are being made ready for the big Thanksgiving feast! I hope you are joined by friends and family and just having a great time enjoying one another's company as Thanksgiving Day is here! I hope you've had your warm clothes handy, as the temperatures have dropped out here in West Valley, and I can't say I've enjoyed them much, as the 30-some degree temps seem to chill me to the bone! Here's hoping for a little bit of a warm-up as the holiday arrives. SPECIAL...

SOME OF BOTH--Once again, it depended on where you were and what time you were there, as to what kind of weather you had this past weekend. At times it was quite balmy and clear, while the next night or morning might be socked in with fog and other times, the clouds would come in and drizzle on us a bit, and one night it rained hard and blew pretty good, while others didn't feel a thing, so there was definitely a mixed bag of weather. This week shows rain and clouds and some drying periods as well, so it looks like we're just into typical Fall...

HALF AND HALF--We had quite a variety of weather at the end of last week, as it was absolutely gorgeous last Friday, with t-shirt type weather and absolutely horrible on Saturday, which brought out the boots and umbrellas! Sunday morning wound up being pretty dry and decent but by afternoon, it was back to clouds and drizzle, so it was one of those half and half days. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Nov. 10-16 are Ray Lindsey, Jonnie Knowles, Jeff Twiet, Jeff Hedges, Shannon Moore, Mark Helms, Ashley N. Helms, Pat Ohrberg, Ty...

NOT TOO BAD--I am so glad we were able to have a really nice couple of days at the end of last week, as Friday was gorgeous and a good deal of Saturday was nice as well. This gave a nice break from the rain, that we needed, and which had our lawns perking right up, so I wasn't surprised when I heard several lawn mowers running as everybody was trying to get a handle on those uneven lawns and get them looking nice and neat before it was time to put away that lawn mower for the winter. With rain returning by Sunday morning, it was almost a good...

NOT TOO BAD--Last weekend wasn't too bad, as while we had some rain, we also had some dry times, along with some sunshine, so it was certainly better than the weekend before! We even saw the "field lakes" going down at last, so that's always a welcome sight. However, by the time you read this, we are supposedly going back to a rainy streak, so I hope you enjoyed whatever dry time we had, as it looks like the Fall weather, which means, "falling rain," is here! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 27-Nov. 2 are Maury Mooers, Hoby...

PLENTY NASTY--While some folks were complaining about the fact that the "big one" didn't hit us this past Saturday, there were plenty of folks, like me, that felt like our prayers had been answered when another low formed to the west of the "big eye" and drew enough power from it, that those of us in our area and most up north, did not experience too much damage. There were exceptions of course, like down on the Oregon coast where a tornado hit a couple of towns, and were truly devastated, so that was pretty horrific. For all those folks along...

MIXED BAG--Last weekend was a mix of weather, as we had some heavy rain at times, then lighter showers and even some gloomy but yet, dry spells, so we hope you were able to get out during one of those dry times to do those outdoor chores which seem never ending, even during the Fall! The week ahead looks to be a mixture too, but then, afterall, it is October, so we can't expect it to be super nice all the time. As I write this however, the sun is out after a very foggy morning, so we'll enjoy the sun's rays while we can! HURRICANE--Hurricane...

WEEKEND--We ended last week with a gorgeous day on Friday, with temperatures just the way I like them, with a bit of crispness in the air but lots of sunshine. However, the rains did appear on Saturday and some on Sunday, which came with mixed reviews, as some were ready for the rain, the Fall foods, a roaring fire and the great book reading weather, while some of us would have liked just a little more sunshine in order to enjoy the first weekend in October and its activities. It looks like a mixed bag for the week, so keep those umbrellas...
