CHILLY OUT--Last week ended quite wet and a bit chilly, and for some areas to the north of us, as well as in the mountains, the "white stuff" was falling! Classmate, Greg Lloyd, said it was snowing pretty good up there in Everett and others said it was getting quite white out, to which I responded with a "Keep it up there please" request! I hope you used that extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning to snuggle down under the covers and stay warm! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Nov. 9-15 are Jordyn Kattari, Jonnie Knowles, Pat...
MIX OF WEATHER--We have had some gorgeous fall days, and we've had some "so-so" ones like this past Sunday, which was cloudy and gloomy and dampish, but it wasn't pouring down rain at least. Monday was awesome but then our temperatures are going to get colder and wetter I hear, so it's just that time of year I guess, so the warm days are probably a thing of the past from now on. SET CLOCKS BACK--Don't forget, this is the weekend to set your clocks back one hour, so before you go to bed Saturday night, be sure to do that, or you'll wind up...
WILD ONE!--We sure had ourselves a nasty, wet and windy begining to the weekend, as Saturday was just horrible and by the evening, even worse. Many people lost power, which in our case, was caused by a big tree that came down and took out the overhead lines. Then more rain fell later on, after we had already recorded our 6-plus inches that day, so by morning, there was water over West Valley Road once again. For those of us who have lived here awhile, it's pretty normal but for others, it was a bit of a surprise! There was high water in all...
NIPPY--Last weekend was sunny and nice during the daytime but those late night temperatures were below freezing out here in West Valley, so we were definitely feeling the "nip" in the air. Unfortunately, the sunshine will be replaced with more rain and maybe even some strong winds by the time you read this, so let's hope it doesn't last too long and we catch another break in systems, as most of us are really not ready for weeks of cold and rain! The change in weather does remind us however, that we need to be ready for "anything" and so it's...
GOT DAMP--We ended last week with a bit of rain and started the weekend that way too, which of course, was not ideal for those with outdoor plans, but the moisture was certainly needed. The week started with some cool temperatures and quite a bit of fog in the early morning hours on Sunday and Monday, which left everything dripping wet here in West Valley, but then the sun came out and it was real nice. However, as of Tuesday, it looks like our week may be damper and cooler with mountain snow mid-week, but hopefully things will get a little...
NOT TOO BAD--We had a couple of very warm days last week, as it was up in the mid-80s, which isn't too shabby for the end of September, but as of last weekend, it looked like we were back into a little more fall-like weather, with sun one minute and rain the next. We started this work week with lots of fog and temperatures in the 40's, so things are definitely cooling down. This week's forecast isn't looking too bad, so here's to a decent weekend so that all the people holding big events, and those attending them, can enjoy their events...
JUST PERFECT--We couldn't have asked for a better day to hold the First Annual Skamokawa Vista Park Kite Festival this past Saturday, as it was just right I thought! Early in the morning, the winds were pretty calm, but then the afternoon winds showed up on cue and the big, colorful, playful and awesome kites filled the skies to the delight of a park full of kite lovers! The t-shirt weather made the Ship Channel Espresso trailer a big hit, as I saw smoothies and floats and Italian sodas pouring...
WET, WET--As this week began, we had quite a bit of rain and wind too! With all the dry forests around us and the fires raging in so many parts of the PNW, it was really a welcome relief, and it beat the snow that Montana got, as I'm not quite ready for that yet! By the end of the week, we are supposed to have some drier weather return so that will be a relief to all those with outdoor plans for the weekend. In the meantime, I'm listening to the roar of some thunder and hearing there are water spouts along the coast; wild Monday for sure!...
DAMPNESS--It was great to have a little bit of moisture this past weekend, although I'm not sure everyone agreed as there were a lot of things going on, like people camping and fancy cars and trucks headed to car shows, that would rather have had it dry. The beginning of this week was due to be dry and warm, while a cool down and maybe even a few more showers may be falling upon us by the time you read this. However, as we all know, the weather is subject to change from one day to the next. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept....
HOT!--I don't know about you, but if the rain shows up during the latter part of this week like they are forecasting, I will be very relieved, as these high temperatures have just been miserable for a lot of folks without AC and it makes working outside just about impossible. Of course, as seen by the fact that there are fires burning all over our PNW, some rain would be welcomed for those as well, and the cooler/damper weather conditions would certainly be welcomed for all those firefighters who have been battling blazes all over Washington,...
TOASTY--If you like the hot weather, you have obviously been enjoying this latest band of heat that has shown up this week! With temperatures in the upper 90s, this summer weather is not ending and it has led to a real dry one for sure. Fire danger is high and with multiple wildfires still burning out of control, officials are warning us to continue to honor the burn ban and be very vigilant with any hot items, which have the potential to cause/start a fire. As always, make sure you and your animals are getting plenty of water, shade and...
NICE--This past weekend's weather was great, and other than a chance of sprinkles one day this week, we are still going to be basking in the sunshine they say, so I hope you're all enjoying this string of sunny weather. However, there are a few folks who aren't thrilled with all this drynes, as those running low on water or who are already out around here, are probably hoping for some rain! With fire danger extremely high, I'm guessing fire fighters are wishing for some as well. As always, be...
COOLED DOWN--Lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed the cloudier, cooler mornings before the sun came out in the afternoon as that meant things did not get so hot here as they have been inland, and that's fine by me. The heavy marine layer even gave us some damp roads a couple of days from the dew dripping off the trees and beings it's been so dry, even that amount of moisture was welcomed. However, by Saturday evening we were listening to real rain in West Valley and I was totally happy about that. As a matter of fact, I think I even heard my yard...
BEASTLY--I hope you all survived the record heat of last week and also the hazy, smoke-filled skies that descended around a lot of local areas, as it was pretty nasty out there for a bit. I was thankful for the wind on Friday, which not only caused some impressive white caps near Flandersville for the folks on their boards with sails, but best of all, it scoured out most of that smoke; yeah! I was thankful to see some clouds on Saturday morning so my parched plants had a short bit of reprieve from the sun, but it wasn't long and it was back to...
TOASTY--By the time you read this, we should have experienced some very hot temperatures and I hope you're faring okay during this first full week of August. Needless to say, it seems almost impossible that we are into yet another month, which is synonymous with the Wahkiakum County Fair, football practice and school shopping, as the buses will be rolling out before you know it! However, we've got this little heat wave to deal with first, so we hope you're doing all you can to keep yourself and your animals, cool and well hydrated! Sadly, I don...
NICE WEEKEND--Our heat wave has continued and once again we've had some pretty doggone nice weather with only a hint of dampness last Thursday morning, but by afternoon, the sun was up and shining again and it warmed right back up. The fact that we've had over 80 inches of rain this year, makes it hard to believe that our dry spell has already caused our lawns to turn brown! It has also meant a lot of fires in the Western state, with 70 percent of them being caused by man, so it's truly imperative to be careful with any fire or hot metals or...
BEEN WARM--By the time you read this, you may have experienced a little drizzle this morning, but forecasters weren't sure, and if it were to show up, it wouldn't be much. While some areas haven't had any sprinkles, we did manage a few last week when no one else did. Needless to say, the fire danger is high and it's important to take extra care to prevent a dangerous situation. One guy had a tail pipe come down and was dragging it along the freeway, and with sparks flying, was setting off small fires all along the freeway. Don't be that guy!...
DRY SPELL--Last Friday was the beginning of the burn ban for our area, and with all this dry weather we've been having, and blazes all over the western states, it's definitely not the time to be lighting a fire to burn any brush. As we head into another stretch of nice weather they say, here's hoping you've been paying attention and not gotten yourself a fine by burning when you shouldn't! Last Friday's cloudy morning and cooler temperatures were just right for working outside, although my back wouldn't really agree with it much, as it's...
PRETTY NICE--The first weekend in July was pretty doggone nice, as we had temperatures in the 70's and a nice breeze, so that was much more to my liking than those higher temps we had a short while ago. It was also looking dry for the big 4th of July celebrations that were going on, so that's always nice, as last year we were a little wet out here in West Valley. Here's hoping we keep that good weather for all our upcoming festivities around our area! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 6-12 are Irene Martin, Jaiden Mahitka, Pat...
HEAT WAS ON!--The forecasters were right when they said it was going to be a warm one this past weekend, as it was plenty hot out here in West Valley! The cloud cover and cooler temps on Monday made for a much more comfortable and welcomed relief from the heat. SLIGHT CORRECTION--If you read my column last week, you would see where the WCHS Museum in Cathlamet is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., but unfortunately, the "header" on my column said it was open on Friday and Saturday, which is not correct. Sorry for any confusion!...
NOT QUITE SO GOOD--The really warm, super nice, really good weekend that was supposed to have taken place over Father's Day weekend, didn't quite turn out the way they first predicted it would, at least not here. Go figure! However, after some rain on Saturday, and after some more clouds and drizzle on Sunday morning, we did have the sun come out in the afternoon and things got warm and steamy/muggy, which is what we get after the sun hits all the wetness around here. Supposedly this week is going to be dry and down right hot by the end of the...
SO-SO--It depended on where you were this past weekend as to what kind of weather you had. For some, it wasn't a bad day at all, while for others, it was a day of some sunshine accompanied by various rain showers. As we're only a week away from Summer, let's hope we have a bit of a dry stretch so we can put away those umbrellas! If we are to believe the forecast, it's supposed to be nice for this Father's Day weekend, so let's hope that's true. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 15-21 are Robert Montgomery, Jason Ledtke, Megan...
NOT TOO BAD--It wasn't blazing hot this weekend, but by golly, it was just about perfect for the car buffs that showed up as last year's scalding temperatures were replaced with much milder, and more comfortable ones for the annual Rods and Reels Rod Run that happened this past Saturday! Sunday was the same mix of clouds and sunshine moments, so it was a great time to be outside doing yardwork or just enjoying the dry time. Looks like we've got some more dry days ahead during the first part of this week, so the BBQ season may be in full swing,...
A MIX--We had some pretty warm days last weekend, but by the time you read this, it's supposed to have cooled down and maybe even rained, so we have really had some "yo-yo" weather around here lately! Umbrellas for shade one day and wearing flip-flops and the next thing you know, we're still using umbrellas but we've got boots on to wade through all the puddles! Let's just hope the weekend will be decent as there's a lot going on and we'd all rather see dry than wet! SPECIAL DAYS--The following people will celebrate their birthdays from June...
SUPER NICE--We certainly couldn't complain about the weekend weather, unless you don't like the sunshine and warmth that went with it! Temperatures were in the mid-70's on Saturday, so it wasn't totally miserable, but then they went up and they were in the mid-80's on Sunday. Monday morning the heat hit us early and it was 87 degrees at our house before noon with temperatures still rising! Most people that I talked to were really loving it and only a few, like me, really preferred the mid-70's better. I was just glad the AC was running and I...
