NICE OUT. Well, we were wanting some nice weather and we finally got it, so I hope you're enjoying it. I have to say that I was a bit overwhelmed by the beginning of this dry spell when we went from 36 degrees in the morning to 91 by late afternoon last Friday, that was unexpected and way too hot for me! It looks like temps are much more to my liking this week as there will be some clouds and sunshine but it will be dry and in the upper sixties, much better for yardwork and outdoor chores I think. LIGHTS. Did you get to see the Northern Lights...
ANOTHER WET BEGINNING. Once again I'm starting off this column with a whole lot of rain hitting my windows but the forecast is showing that we are in for a drying out and we'll be enjoying some wonderful dry, sunny days so I'm certainly hoping that forecast holds up, as it's been pretty soggy this past week. Here's to happy planting and beautiful gardens soon! SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from May 9 thru 15 are: Kerry Brown, Christeena Bassi, Bryce McClain, Ashleigh Montgomery, Don Nicholes, Ashlenn Coleman, David...
Spring weather has certainly been on the damp side around our neck of the woods lately and I'm eagerly awaiting a bit of a warm up as they say we may have a few dry days on the way....that would be great! Beings they say we are in a drought already, I hate to complain about the rain but on the other hand, it's hard to make things grow when it cold and soaking wet. I know lots of folks are wanting to get that yard work done too, which always take a quite a bit of time, so if you're a fair weather yard person like me, I'm sure you'd like to see...
MIXED BAG. Well, we certainly had a big mix up of weather this past weekend, as one minute it would be nice and sunny and then the wind would blow in....hard...and the next thing we knew, the rain would pour down and the branches were coming off the trees onto the road and then "poof", that was gone and it would be nice again. There were areas where folks got a lot of hail too, but that seemed to be "here and there" throughout the county, so for those who got some of that, well, your new planting may have taken a beating....ugh! Forecasters say...
ENJOYING THE WEATHER? Well, I certainly hope you've been enjoying this dry spell as it certainly has made it nice for all of those who have been eagerly awaiting a time like this so that lawns can be attended to and flower beds cleaned up, etc. Of course, I don't think my ole body is taking it all too well, as it is rebelling just a bit by showing me swollen ankles and feeling some aches and pains that I haven't had since last Spring...ha! The forecast shows some more cloudy but dry weather, so here's hoping that holds true so that our "webbed...

MIXED BAG. We had a bit of everything this past week so if you didn't like the weather, you just had to wait a bit and it would change. We had downpours and wind, and we had some impressive lightning with some deafening thunder, followed by some sun breaks and sprinkles and clouds and well, it seemed like the weather gods couldn't decide what to do, so they threw a little of everything our way...ha! Fingers crossed we can have April arrive along with the sun and stick around awhile. SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...
NICE WEEKEND Well, I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the sunny days. I have to say as I begin this column, it is foggy and I swear those ships tooting their foghorns are about ready to come into my back yard. The sun should be showing up soon. It's hard to get all the yard work done when we only get a few days of decent days in a row, not to mention those projects that require more than a day or two to accomplish. Then again, we are just into the first week of Spring, so we shouldn't be too surprised that the clouds are springing a...
DOUBLE HOLIDAY MONTH. I always think of March as being St. Patrick’s Day month and April as being Easter month, but that’s not how it is this year. We’ve got St. Patty’s Day on March 17, which is a Sunday this year, but Easter is on the last day of this month, March 31. It’s one of those holidays that does not have a set time, but occurs on the Sunday after the forty days of Lent for those of the Christian faith, so, it’s always changing. There will be special Easter events at the end of this month with the Wahkiakum Fair Foundation...
COLD AND WET/SNOW. At the beginning of this work week we've had a mixed bag of weather here in West Valley, as we have seen some sun, some rain and even a bit of snow so it's going to be interesting to see if that snow part becomes more pronounced as the week progresses. From the pictures I saw, it was quite white up on Beaver Creek so the snow was extremely close by so I do hope you're careful as you travel around, especially in the higher elevations. The week ahead looks to be quite cold, like in the freezing zone, so be sure to be prepared...
TOILETRY DRIVE. Something new has come up that folks can help out with and that’s a toiletry drive for the students at Wahkiakum High School. Some kids are unable to get the necessities that we all need to keep us clean and comfortable, so we are asking the community to help them out if possible. You can take things up to the high school; you can also bring needed items to the Skamokawa Grange Hall on Thursdays throughout the month of March and they’ll see to it that they get up to the school. Some of the requested items are feminine care pro...
VALENTINE’S DAY IS OVER! As I write this, I’m looking forward to going out to dinner at one of our local restaurants with friends for Valentine’s Day but of course, by the time you read this, the big holiday will be over. I’m hoping you had a good time and I’ll be anxious to hear from you about what you did and maybe what your somebody special did extra special for you that you’d like to share with others. LOOKING WET. We had a half-and-half weekend, with Saturday being much drier than Sunday, when most folks were by their televisions...
CHILLY MORNINGS. This past weekend may have been dry but the late night and early morning hours were certainly not warm as it was below freezing on Saturday and Sunday. We had fog so thick on Sunday morning that you couldn’t see two feet down the road. I understand that it was clear and sunny in the Cathlamet area but Skamokawa means "smoke on the water," so I guess it's to be expected. Ha! COMING UP. I hope you come down to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds on Saturday for their monthly flea market sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. It's a...
PLENTY OF WATER. Well, while we had plenty of water around the area, I was happy that we didn't have any major flooding here in West Valley over the roads and such, so that was a big plus. This week’s forecast shows some dry days and it would sure be nice to dry out for a little bit. The only down side I see about drying out is that it's supposed to get down to freezing again and I could do without that, so be watchful if you have to be out and about in the early morning or late evening hours, as it might just be a little slick out. Here's h...
WET. Well, once again we have come through quite the nasty little snow and ice storm and we are back to rain. The forecast is looking more wet than dry, but I'm hoping we get a break for Sunday and Monday, or else we'll be wading through water instead of snow and that's no fun either. Not to mention that after a freeze, we often have mudslides and we don't need those either. Let's hope we end January with no big issues. PREPPED? As the year—and winter—has just begun, it's imperative to take notes on what went smoothly or what went wrong dur...
ENOUGH ALREADY! Well, I don't know about you but Ole Man Winter can move along and take all his bitter cold with him. I'm sure we've all had enough of the snow, ice, sleet, bitter winds and nastiness by now, at least I have. Once we get to the point where the outdoor temps and blustery winds can cause frostbite within half an hour, I'm done with all the pretty white stuff! By the time you read this, we should be back to more acceptable weather conditions and that can't come soon enough for me and the critters that have had to be outside...
ARE YOU READY? I was hoping that the frigid, possibly snowy, forecast would have warmed up and all the warnings for the super cold temperatures would have gone away by now, but nope— forecasters are still saying temperatures are going to plummet by the time you read this and you may need to be chipping ice or shoveling snow or both. My plan is to stay put and stay warm and I hope all of you who actually have to be out and about in the cold weather will find a way to stay warm and safe. Please keep your vehicle loaded with all the supplies y...
A BRAND NEW YEAR. Here we are in 2024, and it seems like 2023 just flew by! Now we will all have to get used to writing 2024 on everything, just when we've gotten used to writing 2023. At any rate, I hope you had a good New Year’s Eve and enjoyed a good time no matter what you did. I know I enjoyed my dinner out at our local restaurant but I didn't stay for the late-night festivities; I was one of many who opted to watch the new year come in from the comfort of my couch in my living room! I think getting older has something to do with that, b...
MERRY CHRISTMAS! As I begin to write, it is actually Christmas Day, a very wet and blustery one, so I hope my power stays on long enough to finish it up and send it in. There is a high wind warning for this evening, so I'm planning on “batting down the hatches” and hunkering down inside. I hope you're all enjoying the holiday and I hope to hear more about it once everyone settles back into their routine when Christmas is over. Christmas morning is only the beginning of the festivities for most folks; I hope all the dinner plans went well, you...
BITTER COLD. While my weather app was telling me that I was sitting in mid-forties temperatures this past weekend, the truth of it was that we were experiencing below freezing temperatures with lots of frost everywhere. So they were off just a wee bit. I was definitely bundling up and trying to stay warm while it slowly warmed up amid the call outs for power outages due to cars sliding around on the slick roads and those pesky power poles getting in the way. We are supposed to be getting rain for several days prior to Christmas. I hope it is...
PLENTY WET. We had heavy rain this past weekend and, with a little luck, the forecast for drier weather will prevail. While it won't be all dry, it's not supposed to be pouring rain every day either. Fingers crossed! SPECIAL DAYS. Celebrating birthdays this week are Fritz Carmine, Breanna Smith, Zachary Stewart, Sandy Bergseng, Tyson Webb Foster, Jim Webb, Abby Buennagel, Lynah Bergseng, Azula Hoven, Wesley Hoven, Kellie K. Masters, Riley Brown, Angel Brown, Isla Nortrup, Hillary Price, Sunnie Beard, Ruth Linquist, Kristen Souvenir, Barbara...
SPECIAL DAYS. Celebrating birthdays this week are Dennis Reid, Julie Iverson, Kitty Speranza, Carol McClain, Jai Snow, Tom Bosch, Cristina Moonen, Nora Sorenson, Gary Bergseng, Ryan Prestegard, Justin Watkins, Chris Barnes, Ron Hendrickson, Collin Parker, Todd Souvenir, Derek West, Lacey Johnson, Julie Burdick, Tyler Johnson, James Robinson, Donna Downing Christensen, Alexandra Wright, Patrice Everest Holtz and Lucy Owen. Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Mr. and Mrs. Zack Bonds and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Vik. May all of you have terrific...
COLD ENOUGH? I guess it depends on where you live, but out in West Valley we were down in the lower twenties this past week and that’s plenty cold for me! It looks like we will be warming up later this week, though, so by the time you read this, it will have rained for several days. I’m not sure I like that either, but at least folks might not be sliding off the roadways on black ice. There was also freezing fog, which can take drivers by surprise. (But Skamokawa didn’t get its name from nothing; it means, “Smoke on the Water.”) There wer...
WET BEGINNING. As I started this column, it was a gloomy and damp Sunday morning after a very wet and windy Saturday night. Thankfully, by afternoon, we got to see some sunshine; that was a welcome break. By the time you read this, it's supposed to have been sunny and clear for several days. That will make for a nice Thanksgiving weekend. Of course, clear weather also seems to mean a big drop in our nighttime temperatures, so keep that in mind before you wind up with frozen hoses or outside spigots. Since we had several nights below freezing...
COLD AND WET. Well, if you're like me, the dampness we have had has made your bones ache. It's not just the cooler temperatures, but the feeling that we've been "chilled to the bone" with all that moisture that comes from the fog and the rain and the downpours. It looks like we may have some dry days this week but that also means temperatures will fall into the thirties, so there's always a trade -off when the clear days show up. However, by the weekend, it looks like a fifty-fifty shot at rain for multiple days. I'm sure my old bones will be...
