IN THE BOOKS! The Bald Eagle Days festivities for this year have come and gone but boy, did they get nice weather and a good crowd! I thought it was terrific as I attending a reunion near the marina and the breeze blowing all day made it just perfect. We woke up Sunday morning to some thunder and lightning along with a light sprinkle, I'd say the timing couldn't have been more perfect. Hats off to all those who were in charge of this event and those who took part, from parade participants to vendors and more; It is always a success when...
STILL DRY. It is hard to believe we are still in a dry spell, though temperatures have thankfully cooled down to the mid and upper seventies, with a good breeze that beats those higher temps by a mile! It's very dry however and the burn ban is still in effect. Please continue to use extreme caution during this time because one spark and a little breeze can start a roaring, out-of-control fire in just minutes. The house you save may be your own. SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from July 18 through 24 are: Naomi Meyer,...
WET BEGINNING. As I start this column on the very last day of June, it is quite wet out here in West Valley, while that's not ideal for those wanting to get their hay crop in, it is good for the fire danger. With the Fourth of July holiday coming up and all the fireworks being lit off, this wetness should help keep our area a bit greener and wetter and hopefully, we will not see any fires caused by fireworks. However, a big drying trend is coming they say and with temperatures up in the mid-80s it will be great to get that hay crop, camp, or...
MIXED BAG. It's been a bit of this and that for weather, one day it was hot and toasty and the next we got cooler. We saw some light rain Saturday evening and Sunday morning, the hay makers weren't too thrilled. We're going to start this work week out dry with a drippy couple of days mid-week. Dry, not overly hot, which is fine by me but not so great for those that need heat to make decent hay. One thing that kills a good hay crop is moisture, and in Skamokawa we always seem to get more than our fair share of that! Here's hoping things dry out...
CRAZY WEATHER. As this week begins, we had a mix of everything, which included thunder and buckets of rain mixed in with sunshine and blue skies, and it really depended on where you were as to what you had at your house and when you had it, but all in all, it was a day of "what's next?" I think. We did enjoy some nice days earlier, along with some wet ones, but now that it is officially Summer, let's hope the dry and sunny forecast shows up and dries out our webbed feet a bit, ha! SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from...
DRIZZLE. As another week begins, we've got a very damp Sunday going on, which actually worked out okay, as with all that nice weather, it was definitely time to get out there and do some yardwork and I "feel it" all over...ha! So, this drizzle saved me from going out and doing more work that my body would just as soon not do, so here I am....sitting inside, nice and dry. The forecast is showing more cloudiness and some mild temps, so that suits me just fine. The one day that it got up in the 90's here was just a tad bit much for me! Here's...
VERY BRIEF. Due to technical difficulties, this column will be extremely short this week and I will try to do do a lot more "yakking" next week. I do hope you have all come through the buckets of rain and blustery wind storm that we have had to deal with this past Sunday and Monday. We had three inches of rain out here in West Valley, (so far) so it was not nice. SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from June 6 thru 12 are: Brenden McClain, Justin Elfers, Elijah Doiron, Matalyn Longtain, Peyton Souvenir, Paige Ferguson,...
SKAMOKAWA NEWS by Kay Chamberlain 360-795-3425 - klouise49@outlook.com NICE START. After a rather damp and gloomy weekend, this Monday morning, which is Memorial Day, is letting us see a whole lot more sunshine and for that I am very thankful. I know there are a lot of ceremonies and things going on to commemorate this solemn occasion dedicated to all those that gave their lives while serving our country. May we never forget those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and may their families know that we will never forget them. SPECIAL...
MIXED BEGINNING--As this week begins, we seem to have sunshine one minute, then it begins to get pretty windy and the clouds roll in as we get a bit of moisture falling on us. So when it's sunny, one has to hurry and get chores done quickly before Old Man Weather changes his mind again! If the forecast holds, we may have cloudy weather but no rain as this month winds down, but we'll just have to wait and see if that holds up or not. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 23-29 are Elle Britt, Bryson Havens, Mitch Moonen, Scarlet Eng...
NICE OUT. Well, we were wanting some nice weather and we finally got it, so I hope you're enjoying it. I have to say that I was a bit overwhelmed by the beginning of this dry spell when we went from 36 degrees in the morning to 91 by late afternoon last Friday, that was unexpected and way too hot for me! It looks like temps are much more to my liking this week as there will be some clouds and sunshine but it will be dry and in the upper sixties, much better for yardwork and outdoor chores I think. LIGHTS. Did you get to see the Northern Lights...
ANOTHER WET BEGINNING. Once again I'm starting off this column with a whole lot of rain hitting my windows but the forecast is showing that we are in for a drying out and we'll be enjoying some wonderful dry, sunny days so I'm certainly hoping that forecast holds up, as it's been pretty soggy this past week. Here's to happy planting and beautiful gardens soon! SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from May 9 thru 15 are: Kerry Brown, Christeena Bassi, Bryce McClain, Ashleigh Montgomery, Don Nicholes, Ashlenn Coleman, David...
Spring weather has certainly been on the damp side around our neck of the woods lately and I'm eagerly awaiting a bit of a warm up as they say we may have a few dry days on the way....that would be great! Beings they say we are in a drought already, I hate to complain about the rain but on the other hand, it's hard to make things grow when it cold and soaking wet. I know lots of folks are wanting to get that yard work done too, which always take a quite a bit of time, so if you're a fair weather yard person like me, I'm sure you'd like to see...
MIXED BAG. Well, we certainly had a big mix up of weather this past weekend, as one minute it would be nice and sunny and then the wind would blow in....hard...and the next thing we knew, the rain would pour down and the branches were coming off the trees onto the road and then "poof", that was gone and it would be nice again. There were areas where folks got a lot of hail too, but that seemed to be "here and there" throughout the county, so for those who got some of that, well, your new planting may have taken a beating....ugh! Forecasters say...
ENJOYING THE WEATHER? Well, I certainly hope you've been enjoying this dry spell as it certainly has made it nice for all of those who have been eagerly awaiting a time like this so that lawns can be attended to and flower beds cleaned up, etc. Of course, I don't think my ole body is taking it all too well, as it is rebelling just a bit by showing me swollen ankles and feeling some aches and pains that I haven't had since last Spring...ha! The forecast shows some more cloudy but dry weather, so here's hoping that holds true so that our "webbed...

MIXED BAG. We had a bit of everything this past week so if you didn't like the weather, you just had to wait a bit and it would change. We had downpours and wind, and we had some impressive lightning with some deafening thunder, followed by some sun breaks and sprinkles and clouds and well, it seemed like the weather gods couldn't decide what to do, so they threw a little of everything our way...ha! Fingers crossed we can have April arrive along with the sun and stick around awhile. SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...
NICE WEEKEND Well, I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the sunny days. I have to say as I begin this column, it is foggy and I swear those ships tooting their foghorns are about ready to come into my back yard. The sun should be showing up soon. It's hard to get all the yard work done when we only get a few days of decent days in a row, not to mention those projects that require more than a day or two to accomplish. Then again, we are just into the first week of Spring, so we shouldn't be too surprised that the clouds are springing a...
DOUBLE HOLIDAY MONTH. I always think of March as being St. Patrick’s Day month and April as being Easter month, but that’s not how it is this year. We’ve got St. Patty’s Day on March 17, which is a Sunday this year, but Easter is on the last day of this month, March 31. It’s one of those holidays that does not have a set time, but occurs on the Sunday after the forty days of Lent for those of the Christian faith, so, it’s always changing. There will be special Easter events at the end of this month with the Wahkiakum Fair Foundation...
COLD AND WET/SNOW. At the beginning of this work week we've had a mixed bag of weather here in West Valley, as we have seen some sun, some rain and even a bit of snow so it's going to be interesting to see if that snow part becomes more pronounced as the week progresses. From the pictures I saw, it was quite white up on Beaver Creek so the snow was extremely close by so I do hope you're careful as you travel around, especially in the higher elevations. The week ahead looks to be quite cold, like in the freezing zone, so be sure to be prepared...
TOILETRY DRIVE. Something new has come up that folks can help out with and that’s a toiletry drive for the students at Wahkiakum High School. Some kids are unable to get the necessities that we all need to keep us clean and comfortable, so we are asking the community to help them out if possible. You can take things up to the high school; you can also bring needed items to the Skamokawa Grange Hall on Thursdays throughout the month of March and they’ll see to it that they get up to the school. Some of the requested items are feminine care pro...
VALENTINE’S DAY IS OVER! As I write this, I’m looking forward to going out to dinner at one of our local restaurants with friends for Valentine’s Day but of course, by the time you read this, the big holiday will be over. I’m hoping you had a good time and I’ll be anxious to hear from you about what you did and maybe what your somebody special did extra special for you that you’d like to share with others. LOOKING WET. We had a half-and-half weekend, with Saturday being much drier than Sunday, when most folks were by their televisions...
CHILLY MORNINGS. This past weekend may have been dry but the late night and early morning hours were certainly not warm as it was below freezing on Saturday and Sunday. We had fog so thick on Sunday morning that you couldn’t see two feet down the road. I understand that it was clear and sunny in the Cathlamet area but Skamokawa means "smoke on the water," so I guess it's to be expected. Ha! COMING UP. I hope you come down to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds on Saturday for their monthly flea market sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. It's a...
PLENTY OF WATER. Well, while we had plenty of water around the area, I was happy that we didn't have any major flooding here in West Valley over the roads and such, so that was a big plus. This week’s forecast shows some dry days and it would sure be nice to dry out for a little bit. The only down side I see about drying out is that it's supposed to get down to freezing again and I could do without that, so be watchful if you have to be out and about in the early morning or late evening hours, as it might just be a little slick out. Here's h...
WET. Well, once again we have come through quite the nasty little snow and ice storm and we are back to rain. The forecast is looking more wet than dry, but I'm hoping we get a break for Sunday and Monday, or else we'll be wading through water instead of snow and that's no fun either. Not to mention that after a freeze, we often have mudslides and we don't need those either. Let's hope we end January with no big issues. PREPPED? As the year—and winter—has just begun, it's imperative to take notes on what went smoothly or what went wrong dur...
ENOUGH ALREADY! Well, I don't know about you but Ole Man Winter can move along and take all his bitter cold with him. I'm sure we've all had enough of the snow, ice, sleet, bitter winds and nastiness by now, at least I have. Once we get to the point where the outdoor temps and blustery winds can cause frostbite within half an hour, I'm done with all the pretty white stuff! By the time you read this, we should be back to more acceptable weather conditions and that can't come soon enough for me and the critters that have had to be outside...
