NOT GREAT--Those who were counting on a nice Memorial weekend in which they could spend three days in the sun, certainly were disappointed. Most of us definitely saw more rain than sunshine as this month came to a close. Here's to a sunnier June. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 2-8 are Becca Keilwitz, Ryan Helms, Robyn Longtain, Jill Havens, Terry Vik, Derrick Bardsley, Michael Wegdahl, Tori Wegdahl, Blain Fritzie, Justin Elfers, Lamar Blix, Rodney Ingersoll, Justin Lindsey, Chloe Cothren, MacKenzie Stevens, Johnnie...
DECENT BEGINNING--I’m beginning this column on Sunday, and it’s starting out fairly decent. Then again, as we saw on Saturday, the sunny day can quickly become a wet one, complete with hail so we’re still dealing with this crazy Spring weather. Not everybody got this sudden burst of nasty weather but it certainly caught those who were in it off guard, as the sunshine had folks sporting light shirts in the 69 degree day, but when that wind brought in those heavy laden clouds that just dumped on us, well the temperature took a quick nose-dive and...
STILL CHILLY/DAMP--The first half of May has certainly been on the damper side of things, which has been fairly disappointing. We had such heavy rain squalls on Sunday, that it took out all reception from the satellite, and of course, really hammered my poor flowers. They say we are supposed to be drying up a bit, so maybe we’ll get a couple of nice days this Friday and Saturday; certainly would be nice! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 19-25 are Kris Parke, Tayler Stornetta, Mitch Moonen, Julie McKinley, Bryson Havens, Elle B...
FAIRLY WET--As I begin this column, the sun is actually shining but there have definitely been some wet moments to the day, and from the looks of it, we’ve got more of that kind of weather headed our way. So, while we may see some dry days now and then, there just doesn’t look to be a string of nice dry days coming our way, which we’d hope to see by now. But as we all know, these Spring forecasts can change at the drop of a hat, so I’m hoping those days that are showing “50 percent chance of rain” wind up being 20 or 30 and that those rain...
MIXED BAG--This past weekend wasn’t too bad compared to other ones and to other places who saw much more rain than we did in West Valley, so I was happy for the sunshine we received. Even this Monday started out a bit drippy but the blue skies that appeared by mid-day were quite enjoyable. Unfortunately they didn’t last, as more rain came in as the day progressed. The forecast is for a couple of drier days early in the week but by the time you read this, it looks to be a pretty soggy weekend. Like it or not, those April showers are lin...
GREAT WEEKEND--I hope you were able to enjoy the glorious weekend weather we had. While we may have some more wet stuff during the week, we are supposed to have another glorious weekend to end April and begin May, so I hope that happens as we could all use a little “Sunshine Medicine” to help brighten our spirits these days. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 28-May 4 are Shannon McClain, Jenna Engle, Carrie Backman, Darren Olsen, Connie Luthi, Troy Heagy, David Faubion, Wolfgang Hoven, Ricky Montgomery, Scott Holland, Car...
NICE START--We are starting this column on a very sunny Easter Sunday and wow, that couldn’t have come at a better time as it’s always nice to have a special holiday be a pleasant one. It’s especially nice considering that the couple days before that were wild, with all kinds of Spring weather, as it “sprung” between rain, hail, snow, thunder, wind and that stuff called “grauple.” Considering many were dealing with snow last Sunday, April 10, this was a huge improvement! Of course, this entire week looks to be on the wet side so please turn o...
NEW CONTACT INFO--I’ve been “out of the loop” lately, and my former email address is no longer working and I can’t contact everybody all over again, so I’ve opted to put my new email address on here for those of you who would rather contact me that way: klouise49@outlook.com. Here’s hoping this computer stays up and running! COLD START--As I begin this column, the hills around us are white and we even had some snow on the windshield of our rigs this morning, so when they said that snow levels were dropping, I guess they weren’t kidding! Folk...
WET START--As I begin this column, it’s a damp Sunday morning, and from the looks of the forecast, we’re only going to get a couple of nice dry days and if you get this paper on Thursday, that might be the second one and the last dry one for several days, so here’s hoping you didn’t have any outdoor plans. Due to the possibility of a very nasty storm system coming in, as well as appointments coming up, I’m going to be turning my column in extra early, as we just never know about the timing of these windy predictions or their consequen...
DECENT START--As I begin this column it’s a bit cloudy but with the sun peeking through now and then, it beats the pouring rain by a mile! Plus, with devastating weather events happening in the southeast part of our country, and wildfires in other states, I’d say we are very fortunate to be where we are right now. The forecast for the weekend looks to be on the dry side, with rain coming back Monday, so we’ll hope the good weather hangs in there and we don’t get fooled on April Fool’s Day! BIGGEST GAG/JOKE?--Speaking of April Fool’s Da...
SPRING IS HERE--As this week begins, a lot of folks are hoping that now that Spring is officially arrived, we will see some much drier and warmer temperatures. While we may have begun this new season a bit on the damp side, the current forecast shows more dry days than wet, so we can only hope that holds true. It also shows the rainy weather may come back on Sunday but with only a 30 percent chance, we can hope it’s just a brief shower and won’t last long. Here’s to Spring and sunshine, which should make us all feel a lot cheerier and it will ce...
BIT DRIPPY--After a very nice sunny start this past Saturday, the rain front moved in by about two that afternoon and then we got a soaking that evening; at least West Valley did! Waking up to more gloomy, wet weather on Sunday morning, after losing an hour of sleep, was all the more reason to cozy up by the fire and either read a book or watch a little NASCAR in the afternoon. Whatever you did, I hope you’ve prepared yourself for a damp week as there are raindrops in the forecast for every day; although, that doesn’t mean rain all day, so if...
NICE START--As I begin this column, the air is crisp at just 27 degrees and the ground is white with thick frost but the sun is shining and it looks like this Super Bowl Sunday is going to be a really pretty day. Unfortunately the work week looks to start out pretty wet and so does the coming weekend, but at least a few days in there should be dry, so it looks like we’d best hurry and take advantage of these dry spells while we can. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Feb. 17-23 are Vickie Reid, Jade Mahitka, Alyssa Stratton, N...
DRY BEGINNING--As this week begins, we are seeing some sunshine after a cloudy start so that’s a welcome sight. We had a decent day on Saturday as well, so a weekend of dryness was very pleasant indeed. While we are going to have several nice days this week, it looks like those nice days will bring about freezing temperatures in the late night hours, so I hope you haven’t gotten too gung-ho with all your plantings. Once those dry days get over, the forecasters are saying we are in for a weekend and more of rain, so while we’ll be warmer, we’ll...
SOGGY--As this week begins, we are certainly in a wet and soggy weather pattern which they say will last all week, with possibly a dry break on Saturday. Last week the forecast for snow on Thursday did indeed show up but thankfully did not last as long as the batch before that. As we march into March, we are hopefully heading into warmer weather, but then again, I’ve seen it snow in April at Easter time! TURNING IN EARLY--As I begin this column, I’m told that we have a high wind advisory being posted and a scheduled PUD outage for my particular...
COLD ENOUGH?--By the time you read this, we may have had some super cold evenings and depending on which weather report is correct, we may even be seeing some snow flurries today. I hope that doesn’t happen but with this cold system moving in, anything is possible. I just hope everybody was prepared for this “arctic blast” and had plenty of extra feed for their outdoor animals and if you had any plants out that you got them covered up ahead of time and were able to protect and save them, as those temperatures in the teens don’t exactly bode we...
MIXED--As we began this week, it was freezing cold and super foggy, but then the sun came out on Sunday. I think everyone was outside and enjoying those rays but then came Monday morning and in West Valley, we were socked back in with that thick, damp fog that makes your bones ache, so the forecast for the week, which says "sunny and dry" will be amazing if it holds up. I hope it does as I think an extended period of time soaking up a little Vitamin D will really help lift everyone's spirits! SPECIAL DAYS--Those enjoying special days from Feb....
CLOUDY START--As I begin this column, it's pretty cloudy with just a smattering of raindrops, but it appears we'll be seeing some more "real rain" a little later on, so I hope you've kept the boots and umbrellas by the door! For now, the snowflake that had appeared in the forecast on my weather app has disappeared and I sure hope it stays gone. Considering there is a blizzard going on back east with tens of thousands without power and feet of snow on the ground, I'm quite happy to put up with the rain! Let's just hope February is nicer to us...
COLD BEGINNING--As this week began, we not only saw some extreme fogginess, but it was also below freezing, which meant the water buckets for the animals were covered in ice and it definitely meant being inside was much more pleasant. Once the fog let up, we did get to see some sunshine which was most welcome. According to the forecast, we are going to be back to rain by this weekend, so while I didn't care much for the freezing cold, I sure enjoyed the dry part that came with it. Let's hope the rainy stretch is a short one! FINGERS...
CALMER--We were all very relieved to have a much calmer weather pattern this past weekend, which gave us some milder temperatures and some sunshine and also some awesome sunrises and sunsets. After the snow and the relentless rainfall and flooding, this break was definitely appreciated. The current weather forecast for a drier weekend also suggests much colder temperatures, so we'll have to keep an eye out for the possibility of temperatures falling into the freezing category. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Jan. 20-26 are...
NASTY WEATHER--I wrote last week that the rains were coming and that I had hoped we wouldn't get hit too hard, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. Sadly, our area and most of our state, simply got hammered with the relentless rainfall that melted the mountains of snow we already had and along with high tides, brought massive flooding everywhere! So, we went from over a foot of snow, to multiple feet of water, which covered all of our valley floors and washed out culverts, tore up the blacktop and destroyed roads, stranded animals, brought...
MELTING--As I begin this column, we still have plenty of snow on the ground in West Valley, with a layer of ice on top, but we are also seeing some raindrops, so the hope is that we see green grass soon. Of course, we are also hoping for some rather slow thawing conditions so we don't wind up in a flooding situation, which we have seen happen before. Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a disaster as currently there is a flood watch issued! MONDAY'S SLIDE--As we all had feared, SR 4 was once again the site of a mud and rock slide around MP 44...
WHITE CHRISTMAS--For all those folks who were wishing for a white Christmas, it certainly looked like you got your wish! I had hoped we'd just get a couple of inches but Sunday's snowfall was quite impressive, that's for sure! The heavy snow brought branches and trees down and caused some power bumps and even power outages. Then there were the clumps of heavy snow/ice which fell from the trees and caused some windshields to break, so the snow caused some extra hazards to watch for that some...
COLD/WET/SNOW?--Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? According to my current weather reports, that's exactly what they say is going to happen! Some may get excited about that, but if you have travel plans, that may make you rethink those. As we all know, these forecasts change constantly so just in case, be prepared if you're hitting the highways this weekend! ANIMALS--My weather app is saying we are going to get snow and be freezing for several days and we may even get down to 21 degrees in Skamokawa in the upcoming week and those kinds of t...
COLD/SNOW--As I begin this column, there are snowflakes falling and I must say, "I am not amused!" Actually KM Mountain at MP 22 is very white indeed so that may catch a few people off-guard, but hopefully everyone is prepared for these wintery conditions. Maybe by the time you read this, it will all be gone and we won't have to worry about it as we go into the weekend; fingers crossed! It seems when we have a million holiday things to do and places to go and events happening, that the weather opts to dump some horrible weather event upon us....
