The newly organized Board of the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District met on Thursday, April 13 at Johnson Park with 16 in attendance. The county commissioners chose three of the five who applied to be on the board after all the prior board members resigned. The new board consists of Andrea Vincent, Don Dyer and Judy Johnson. Good morning! Last year my garage flooded twice, so this year I searched for help to control the high volume of water coming down the hill behind my garage. My neighbor, Bob Torppa, is known as a top operator and I know how true that is, but his equipment is too big to get into the narrow area where the stream hits the culvert carrying water down to the county's culvert. Last Saturday, I headed to Cathlamet to take Ben dog to the new groomer, Jenna Lefever, who has set up a lovely spa for dogs with new equipment accommodating big dogs. Eva Malerich and Krist Novoselic are leading a major renovation project of the historic Deep River Church. It's a major project with windows sent out to be redone, rotted outside wall boards being replaced, the steeple being totally rebuilt, the building being painted and more. One week from today, August 25, will be September 1 and the first day of school for students at Naselle/GRV school. It’s been a short summer for many of us because it seemed summer didn’t truly start till mid-July. The helianthus and dahlias are blooming so that’s a sign of late summer. This year, summer feels more like spring or fall to me, but after spending two weeks inside experiencing covid for myself, and the nasty medicine to fight it, I will take any season. Last week, youth who are attending a camp sponsored by the Department of Blind Services visited the Burkhalter Farm in Grays River. They are using the WSSB (Washington State School for the Blind) in Vancouver for their housing. They made the trip to the Burkhalter's organic farm so the youngsters could experience an actual farm for themselves. The students ranged from 14-16 years in age. Dear Neighbors: (written on Monday) We all love July 4 for any number of reasons. I like having a long weekend to work in my yard and watch the fireworks down valley at the Zimmerman farm. As of July 1, Valley Cup Espresso in Naselle has changed hands and is now called Naselle Coffee. After 10 years, Gail Queener sold her latte stand to Hannah Footh who will now make coffee drinks for residents and visitors who travel through Naselle, or buy groceries at Okie's Market or watch a ball game nearby.
