    Grays River Valley Center in Rosburg will be holding their annual Community Pot-Luck on Sunday, July 10th, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided at no charge; visitors can bring a dish to share.     Plans are shaping up for Cathlamet’s Bald Eagle Days summer festival July 15 and 16. The two-day festival includes the traditional parade, street fair, and fireworks show. Organizers are enhancing the relatively new geocaching event, turning it into a two-day family geocaching competition treasure hunt.     The Wahkiakum County commissioners' office reported Monday that the US Coast Guard has required that an AIS GPS Transmitter be installed on the ferry so that other marine vessels can track the location of the ferry at all times through a satellite signal. This is a new federal regulation for a vessel the size of the ferry Oscar B.     Chuck Beyer, Wahkiakum County Public Works Director, on Monday said that is his understanding that the ferry Oscar B. will be taken off of dry dock tomorrow (Tuesday) and run through a series of US Coast Guard tests to verify that the repairs are complete. Once the ferry passes all required tests, the crew will bring the vessel back to Cathlamet, and it will be running on the regular schedule....

  • Compact sets openings for fall salmon fisheries

    The Columbia River Compact met July 29 to set openings for late summer and fall salmon fisheries. The non-Indian mainstem early fall salmon fishery will have several 9-hour openings in August. The openings start at 9 p.m. on August 9,11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 23, 25 and 27. The select areas--off channel fisheries--also had openings. The compact set 36 nights for Deep River starting August 17 and 46 nights each for Blind Slough and Young's Bay.     In last week's article about the meeting of the Wahkiakum School District board of directors, The Eagle erred in stating the cost of a piece of phone system equipment. The article should have stated, "The board approved a location identifier system for the new phone system that will be installed as the school improves security around campus. The location identifier system will cost the school $3,100 a year," and not per month.     Drivers who use State Route 4 west of Cathlamet should prepare for occasional delays this summer. Beginning Monday, July 6, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace two aging culverts linking the Elochoman River Slough to the Columbia River. That work will not immediately disrupt traffic, but drivers can expect occasional daytime, single-lane closures on SR 4 at milepost 34 beginning Thursday, July 16.     Howard & Judy Brawn's Irish Wolfhound, O'Quinn Misty River Pilgrim, completed requirements for AKC championship under AKC Judge Nancy Leising June 13 at the Cascade Hound Specialty show in Hillsboro, Oregon. Pilgrim waltzed around the show ring with his handler, Shelby Miller. Pilgrim is 3'2" at the shoulder and weighs 170 lbs, so his friends dubbed him with a new nickname to go along with his new championship. He's now known as "the Yeti."
