  • New Chamber director finds serendipity

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 25, 2021

If you ask Stacey Lane, it was serendipity that brought her to Wahkiakum County. "I don't necessarily believe in luck," she said. "I love being in Cathlamet. It's probably the most hidden little gem of the state. I know one of the challenges is that it's off the beaten path, but that's one of its charms, and the people are amazing." Lane is the new director for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. She joined the organization as the assistant director part time last year, before stepping into the...

  • Jordyn Watson

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 25, 2021

Jordyn Watson, who has been attending school in Wahkiakum County since the fifth grade, seems at home in her position as an outside hitter for the Mule volleyball team. Prior to her freshman year, she'd been central to team play as a setter, she said, but Coach Kayli Hurley decided to move her to the outside position instead, and she's been racking up kills ever since. "I love hitting," Jordyn said. If you've ever connected a well timed strike to the ball while simultaneously gaining altitude,...

Daniel Martin is ready to go. He's been studying German, and along with other members of the Wahkiakum High School German Club, started fundraising last year for the biannual trip to Germany, set for this year. "I don't know if you know," Daniel said, "but something came up and we were not going to be able to do that anymore. Something about a pandemic." While that particular trip to Europe might be out for now, he now has a passport, and the whole world will one day open up again. Daniel plays...

  • Jenna Mellis

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 25, 2021

"I know what I'm doing, but I don't know what I'm doing," Jenna Mellis said. "That's what I like about life. Surprises." There are a lot of surprises when you are one of eight kids, and four of them are brothers. She's learned a lot from them. "I learned that I have to be sarcastic with them," Jenna said. "I have to dish it back. If you can't handle the heat, then go somewhere else. I also learned that if you dish it, you have to take the hits." They also taught her that no matter how hard the...

At 3 a.m., we lost Bonneville. The guys responded to the substations and were told to wait for a Bonneville Power Administration switchman to arrive. • Port 1 commission OK's kayak launch site at marina

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 18, 2021

In an effort to improve kayakers' experience coming in and out of the Elochoman Slough Marina, Wahkiakum County Port 1 decided to provide an alternate place for them to enter and exit the water. The kayak launch has been moved away from the boat launch to the commercial dock, which can be accessed by the rock pit, and which will benefit Columbia River Kayaking, which sometimes guides kayak trips from the marina. "That will give them their own spot for staging," Commissioner Scott Anderson said....

  • Meet our Seniors: Hannah Musick

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 18, 2021

Hannah Musick wants to be a doctor. "That's the path," she said with certainty. She got hooked on the idea of medicine in eighth grade, and her passion for the notion has only grown. "Now I'm too stubborn to let it go," she said. Things come pretty easy to Hannah, and so she looks for academic challenges. After earning straight A's her sophomore year, she decided she needed more rigor, and signed up for Running Start, to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and an Associates Degree from...

  • Meet our Seniors: Kaden Anderson

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 18, 2021

Kaden Anderson is in business. He started his first lemonade stand in elementary school, and has been growing the profits from that venture ever since. It turns out that while his classmates were reading Harry Potter, he'd picked up a book on trading stocks. "I've always loved business and learning about it," Kaden said. "I love the idea of investing. I love seeing growth compound. There really is a correspondence between risk and return, so the more you put up, the more you can make, but a lot...

  • Meet our Seniors: Kaleo Silva

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 18, 2021

Kaleo Silva is headed to Washington State University in the fall to study mechanical engineering. “I think the thing that made me want to do engineering was taking physics last year,” he said. “I enjoy math, but when you get to higher level maths like calculus, you are considering hypothetical situations, but physics has real world applications.” It was those real world applications that drew him to engineering, but it was a panel of engineers working in the different specialties who spoke t...

The home, which had been evacuated after being threatened by landslides, was donated by Hancock Forest Industries for the training, District 4 Chief Randy Hoven said. "Periodically we get houses like this,"...

  • Meet our Seniors: Mackenzie Lawlor

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 11, 2021

Mackenzie Lawlor's world is wide open. The future is a mystery to this young woman, but she is up for the ride. The only certainty is a plan to take a gap year after she graduates, just to work, and "learn how the world is." After that, she might attend Lower Columbia College and study psychology. "I'll have to see where the world takes me," Mackenzie said. Kyle Hurley is her favorite teacher at Wahkiakum High School. The day starts with him in leadership class, where she and her classmates...

  • Meet our Seniors: Jerzie Coleman

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 11, 2021

The southern accent is largely undetectable, but as Jerzie Coleman became more animated, the y'alls started flying. It was fun to hear, as were some of the descriptions of the cuisine she's been missing. "The food here," she said. "I don't know how y'all survive. I'm sorry, but it's really bland. What's the key thing over here? Game and fish? Hunting is really big down in the south too, but stuff would have flavor. It would have some kick to it. It was so good, but it was really bad for...

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 4, 2021

With General Manager Dave Tramblie’s resignation on the table, the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners wondered Tuesday whether they should limit candidates for a successor to strictly in-house or consider a broader search. “I think this utility has done a good job of building good relationships with our community, and the people we have on staff have taken ownership and responsibility,” Tramblie said. “I think that moving forward, the most seamless transition would be to hire from wi...

  • Animal advocates' food drive is very successful

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 4, 2021

A pet food drive at the Puget Island Fire Station on Saturday was more successful than the Wahkiakum Animal Advocates Group (WAAG) volunteers could have imagined. So successful that their next pet food drive, which was tentatively set for March, may be postponed a little longer. They don't have the storage space to do another drive too soon, Treasurer Lorrie Fink said, but when the Helping Hand food bank stocks get low, they will plan another event. "Everybody has a soft spot for a pet," Fink...

  • Meet our Seniors: Paige Mace

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 4, 2021

Paige Mace If you are looking for Paige Mace, she'll be in one of two places: the gym or the woods near her home. Paige picked up a basketball the first year she could, and has been stealing, looking for the assist, and driving fearlessly to the basket ever since. "I play basketball for 12 out of 12 months a year," she said, when asked about other sports or hobbies. As an eighth grader, Mace got called up to the Mule varsity team. She counts herself lucky to have played with Peyton Souvenir,...
