The Lady Mules ran into a little competition this week, winning two of three games. Last Thursday, the Lady Mules hosted a 2A Tumwater team after Adna had to cancel because of covid-19. The Lady Mules lost 57-40. "We lost the Adna game with a day's notice," Coach Rob Garrett said. "I was able to get ahold of the coach from Tumwater and they were awesome enough to make the trip down on short notice. We were grateful to be playing a game and even more grateful for the challenge they presented....
The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team only played one game last week after a couple schools in the region had to cancel games because of covid-19. On Friday, Wahkiakum hosted Rainier and won 67-49. The Mules got off to a hot start in the first quarter, Coach Todd Souvenir said, outscoring the Mountaineers 22-7, and shooting 42 percent from three point range. A few Westend community members attended the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting in person or via Zoom on Tuesday to encourage the PUD to move forward on a project to bring water to the Deep River area. Westend resident Karen Bertroch wondered if there might be money available through President Biden’s proposed infrastructure plan to complete the water line to the western border of the county. “It sounds like there would be money available, and it seems a shame that the who...

We are still investigating. We may see as many as five cases by the end of the week. W...
At a quick meeting last Thursday, the Wahkiakum Port 1 Board of Commissioners received an update on milfoil at the marina and learned about a couple potential grants. The Wahkiakum County Weed Board, with the support of Wahkiakum County commissioners, have been trying to address a milfoil problem in some of the local waterways, including the Elochoman Slough Marina, and some of the sloughs on Puget Island. A permit is being renewed, and a company has been hired to spray for it, hopefully this su...
Matthew De La Grange values his time. So much so, he intends to spend his days doing something that makes him happy. Ever since Matthew was young, he's been interested in building. His brother is a civil engineer, and Matthew considered following in his footsteps, but that involved too much math and too much time. So instead, he plans to combine building with another passion: cars. "I'd rather do something I enjoy," Matthew said. "Time flies when you are doing what you love." One day, Matthew wa...
Michael Menard can take the heat. He grew up on the plains in Iowa, Kansas, and Texas, and quite frankly, liked the temperature and the humidity. That's why you'll always find him wearing black and jeans, even when it's 90 degrees here. He momentarily flashed back to life on a quiet farm in the middle of nowhere, laying on hay bales and looking up at the night sky. "It was so nice," he said. About six years ago, his family moved to Wahkiakum County to be closer to his paternal grandparents....
Tyson Hjaltalin is not sure what he's going to do next, but it's bound to be one of two things--gastronomy or astronomy. "I like the stars and cooking," he laughed. One day he would like to open a restaurant. Or study the stars. Maybe both. He's currently enamored with Korean cooking, thanks to his girlfriend and her family, who are from South Korea. "It's not plain old food. They have lots of spicy foods," Tyson said, laughing. "I really like the spicy stuff!" Tyson was born in Wahkiakum, but w...

The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team won two more games this week, and senior Jake Leitz continued his double-double streak. Last Thursday, the team beat Kalama at home 60-59. "Kalama was a good win, but I don't think either team played all that clean," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "It's still early in the season. They did some good things down the stretch. I think we executed in the middle part of that fourth quarter. We could have made things a little easier in the last few minutes of the...

Nine are considered to be potentially active. “Overall we are doing much better as a country,” Wahkiakum Health and Human Services (WHHS) Director Chris Bischoff said on Monday. As for Washington state, Bischoff said there was a significant decline in case counts. "We are not to our summer low yet, but we are getting there. All those things are headed in the right direction,” he said, addin...
Basketball season got off to a quick start for the Wahkiakum Mules boys, who have already played four games and are 2-2. They began their season on the road with a loss to Napavine last Tuesday, 62-49. "They came out and hit four of their first five threes' and put us on our heels," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "We trailed 2-12 to start the game. I thought after falling behind we played tight and nervous on both ends in the first half, but we cut the deficit to two midway through the fourth...
The Wahkiakum High School girls basketball team started their season with three wins this week. They beat Napavine in their home opener last Wednesday, 57-29. "I was super happy with our performance last night," Coach Rob Garrett said. "From a shooting standpoint it wasn't the best, but you can't control the outcome, you can only control the process. As coaches, that's what I really think we need to focus on, the process and how we are getting there, how hard are our kids working, what type of...
Randall Ecklund discovered a passion for one science while studying another. While he enjoyed most of the subjects he studied in school, except perhaps for higher level math, Randall lit up when he started talking about one particular segment of his biology class, when they turned their focus to the chemistry of biology. “It was only about a month of chemistry, but it was always something to look forward to every day,” Randall said. “That class made me want to be a chemist for a while. I had h...
When you love learning as much as Nalani Schultz does, picking a favorite teacher can be hard to do. "I really did love all of my teachers, but I especially enjoyed talking about philosophy and politics with Mr. Cox because it's always exciting and stimulating," Nalani said. "Mr. Stetzer is really funny and unconventional, so that is always fun, and he's kind of awkward. It's hilarious. I really appreciate him because he told me that he saw me being a physics teacher in a brick building and now...
Like his brother Winchester, Remington Greenup was named for a gunmaker. “[My parents] just thought it was a cool name because they go hunting a lot,” Remington said. The sport of hunting never really took hold with Remington, whose friends sometimes call him Rem, or Remy. He does love engines, however. His dad is a logger and mechanic, and Remington has been helping him as much as possible since he was very young. “I loved to help,” Remington said. “Cars and trucks have been a lot of fun to me....
On Tuesday, the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners listened to a quick report about activities at the PUD, discussed the general manager search process, whether or not to record meetings for public access, and continued the conversation about bringing water to Deep River residents. “With our reserves at the level they are, I don’t see any reason why we can’t start doing some work at getting water to the Deep River people,” Commissioner Dennis Reid said. When asked for specifi...

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a new Shop and Dine program, hoping to get people out and about visiting local shops and restaurants. “This was the brainchild of Shannon Britt, who is our chamber president,” Director Stacey Lane said. “People have gotten used to shopping remotely, and as things started to reopen and we moved into Phase 3, we thought it was important to put something together to encourage people to use our local businesses for shopping and dining.” To partici...

Wahkiakum School District has been a kind of educational bookend in Nathan Vallejo's life. He started kindergarten at J.A. Wendt, and 11 or so years later returned for his senior year and to earn his diploma at Wahkiakum High School. He has family here, and so for a month every summer, he would return. As for his memories of kindergarten, he has a vague notion of someone named Hope, but that's all. Nathan hasn't had any trouble adjusting to Wahkiakum High School, even though it's much smaller...
Alex Tantum knows there is a bigger world out there. He came to Cathlamet two or three years ago, when his stepfather found a job opportunity, but he was born in Florida, and lived in Tennessee and California before coming to the Pacific Northwest. "It's pretty good," he says. "It's really expensive to live in California." Living in different places is one kind of education, but Alex has discovered another way to travel and get to know people--foreign films. Foreign everything. He's hooked. So...
Navarre Stewart knows how to make the most of his spare time. He's creative, curious, and busy. If he isn't building models, which is usually, he's taking on some kind of creative writing project, which includes a novel he is working on right now. "The stories I want to tell are like those Star Wars space operas, but with more political grounding," Navarre said. It's clear he's learning a lot in Don Cox's American Government/Global Issues class, and is asking really important questions, which...
