The Wahkiakum Mule boys are looking to put a rough regular season behind them as they open district play this Thursday (tonight) against the Toutle Lake Ducks in Castle Rock at 6:30 p.m. Unlike previous seasons, a district seed was not automatically given to the Mules; rather they had to earn it by way of a play-in game, the Mules’ third game in five days. The three-game stretch began with senior night on Thursday versus the Pe Ell Trojans. In a game that was back and forth for much of it, the Mules ultimately came out on top with a m...
Brett Chaput stepped up to the free throw line Friday night with the team down a point and only seconds to go and very calmly sank both shots to send the Mules off with a 57-56 victory over the visiting Toutle Lake Ducks. Despite an extremely slow start offensively, the defense kept the team in the game long enough for the offense to awaken and score 40 second-half points. John Chambers led the team with 16 points and 4 assists while Lars Blix added 13 points and six boards. Chaput just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds wh...
Fans who showed up for the Mules’ latest home game witnessed a milestone many have probably never seen in a varsity-level game. After trailing 27-24 at the half to Morton-White Pass, the Mules came out fiery in the second half and mopped the floor with the visiting Timberwolves en route to a 58-33 shellacking. The astonishing feat? In the second half the Mules’ defense held the T-wolves offense to just 6 points, all via free throws, while forcing them to go 0 for 26 from the field. Leading the Mules offensively were Lars Blix and Wyatt Par...
For the first 16 minutes of play, the Wahkiakum Mules looked as though they were going to avenge an early season loss to the Kalama Chinooks last Thursday. However, redemption will have to wait as a rough third quarter with just four points on offense put a damper on plans for an end-of-the-year victory as the Mules came up short in a 54-45 loss. The Mules shot just 25 percent from the field whereas the Chinooks were much more successful, hitting 42 percent of their attempts. Leading the Mules with his first big game of the season was Ryan...
The Wahkiakum Mules picked up their fourth win of the season last Wednesday night with a 66-52 win on the road against KM rival Naselle. The victory pushed the Mules a game over .500 for the season and completed the season sweep over the Comets. Despite the team's near season-high 66 points, it was the team defense that Coach Bill Olsen praised after the game, remarking that, “The whole team tonight, at times, played some of the best ‘D’ of the year. It was also nice to see the team’s confidence level was still high following the Adna game....
The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team split two Central League basketball games this week. The Mules got off to a slow start December 15 at Winlock, trailing 11-6 after one, but bounced back in the second quarter to take a two point lead into the half and finished off the Cardinals with a 19 point fourth quarter. The 47-36 victory put the Mules at 3-2 for the season and snapped the team’s two game losing streak. Wyatt Parker led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points while Brett Chaput and Lars Blix chipped in with 10 apiece. Joel Nicolazzi...
The Wahkiakum Mules got off to a slow start and were never quite able to recover in a tough-to-take 63-52 loss at home Monday night against the visiting Mossyrock Vikings. After committing turnovers in four of their first five possessions, the Mules quickly found themselves trailing and were forced to play catch-up the entire game. Starting point guard Jon Chambers was ineligible, and various players filled in at unfamiliar positions. Leading a balanced scoring attack for the Mules was Wyatt Parker with 10 points followed by Brett Chaput, Ryan...
The Mules jumped out to an early 11-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 60-36 season-opening victory over the visiting Naselle Comets Friday night to reclaim the KM Trophy. Despite an early third quarter run that momentarily brought the Comets to within six points, the Mules used some timely three-point shooting and pressuring defense to extend the lead quickly back to double-digits. John Chambers led the Mules in scoring with 18 points with Brett Chaput and Lars Blix contributing 11 and 10, respectively. Wyatt Parker had seven, Ryan Hel...
