The Wahkiakum Lady Mules softball team’s struggles in Central League play continued against the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves last Friday afternoon in Randle. The Lady Mules lost the opener 11-1 in six innings and fell 16-1 in just two and one-half innings in the nightcap. Tori Wegdahl recorded two hits for the Lady Mules in Game 1, including a leadoff triple in the fourth inning, followed by Jem Dyer’s RBI double. Sam Boyce, Morgan Elliott, and Marissa Longtain each added a single. Boyce led off Game 2 with a single and came around to sco...
The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team played host to the Adna Pirates Monday afternoon and suffered a pair of 10 run- five-inning defeats. The Pirates blanked the Mules 10-0 in the opener and took the nightcap by a tally of 15-4. Lars Blix and Mitchel Dault each recorded a pair of base hits and combined to drive in three of the Mules’ four runs in the second game. On April 12, the Mules went on the road to Toutle Lake where they managed just one run on the day, dropping Game 1 to the Ducks 10-0 before falling 11-1 in Game 2. These games were also f...
The Wahkiakum Lady Mule fastpitch team hosted the Adna Pirates on a beautiful Saturday afternoon this past weekend, but unfortunately for Mule fans, the visiting Pirates were too much muscle for the Lady Mules. After suffering an 18-0 pounding in the shortened opener, the Lady Mules fought hard to hang with the Pirates in Game 2, and despite going into the final frame trailing by a score of 4-3, the Pirates outlasted the Lady Mules 10-3 in the nightcap, courtesy of six seventh-inning errors. Sam Boyce tallied a home run for the Lady Mules in...
Last Thursday, the Wahkiakum Lady Mules overcame Naselle’s four run first inning to 10-run their KM counterparts in a 14-4 six-inning victory at Cathlamet. Brieanna Olsen picked up the victory for the Lady Mules, settling down after issuing three walks and a pair of singles in the first inning to allow only two hits over the next five innings. One of those two hits was a one-out double in the third inning, but she was quickly erased when the next batter lined out to second baseman Morgan Elliott, who quickly got the ball to shortstop Tori W...
The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team's offense was a no show through the first four innings last Thursday, but the bats began to awaken in the fifth when they scored a pair of runs before the final out was recorded in the 12-2, five-inning loss to Naselle. Two days later, the Mules took to the road for Mossyrock and wound up on the wrong end of a pair of crushing defeats, falling 10-0 in the opener and 16-1 in the nightcap, both five-inning outings. Steven Doumit and Leo Onodera each went 2 for 3 with a double and a single in game two, with Doumit...
Spring sports are under way and like clockwork, the rains have returned. The baseball season opener for the Wahkiakum Mules was pushed back a few days to Monday, when the Mules hosted a double-header with the Pe Ell Trojans. The Mules fell behind early going into the bottom of the third trailing 3-1, but a hit batter, a single, a double, and six walks later, the Mules jumped on top 7-3. The Trojans countered with a pair of runs in the fourth and tacked on one more in the fifth, cutting the Mule lead to 7-6. The Mules were unable to hold onto...
For the 14th time in school history, the Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team has journeyed east to the “B” state basketball tournament and returned to Cathlamet with hardware in the bag. The Mules earned their fourth 4th-place finish after going 2-1 this past weekend at the Spokane Arena, falling short against the Adna Pirates on Thursday night before turning around to knock off the Lake Roosevelt Raiders and the Dayton Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Mules struggled out of the gate against Adna, giving up four offensive reb...
The Mule Train heads to Spokane for the state tournament today (Thursday) following a last second (literally) victory over the Grizzlies of Bear Creek High School last Friday in Mt.Vernon. The Mules went into the game against the District 1/2 Champion Grizzlies as huge underdogs, with many in the online community (bsports.org) considering Bear Creek a lock to reach Spokane. Wyatt Parker opened the game with a short jumper in the lane to give the Mules a quick 2-0 lead, but the Mules quickly found themselves trailing 5-2 after a pair of Grizzly...
The Wahkiakum Mule boys earned a trip to regionals this past weekend as they grinded the Pacific League’s #1 seeded Raymond Seagulls to a pulp, winning 82-53 Saturday night at Centralia High School. The victory secured the Central League’s dominance over the Pacific League as the Central won eight of nine district matchups and claimed all four regional berths (a feat the Central League girls claimed as well). The Mules came out of the gate slowly against the Seagulls, falling behind the Gulls 7-2 in the opening minutes before erupting on a 16-...
The Mules picked up a pair of 63-48 victories over Pacific League foes Willapa Valley and South Bend in the first and second rounds of district play. The Mules struggled throughout the game against the sixth seeded Willapa Valley Vikings but maintained their poise and knocked off the Vikes last Wednesday night at Centralia High School. John Chambers hit four three-pointers on his way to a team-high 16 points with fellow senior Wyatt Parker returning from a one-game absence to add 15 points and seven rebounds. Chris Bilgic also hit double digits...
The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team travelled to Pe Ell last Thursday night and capped off the regular season with a 75-51 victory over the Trojans. For the second time this season, the Mules faced the Trojans without leading scorer Wyatt Parker. After a fairly slow start, the Mules kicked it into high gear and torched the Trojans for 51 second-half points. Lars Blix led the Mules with 22 points on 7/18 shooting and pulled in eight rebounds. Brett Chaput had his best offensive night of the season as he posted 16 points on 8/13 from the...
The Mules trailed 8-7 early on against Morton-White Pass Tuesday night, but that was MWP’s only lead of the night as the Mules nonchalantly rolled to a 63-44 victory over the visiting Timberwolves in the Mules' final home game of the season. The Mules had a balanced night of scoring as Lars Blix (13), Wyatt Parker (10), and Chris Bilgic (10) all cracked double digits and John Chambers, Yannik Kruetter, and Brett Chaput netted eight apiece. The Mules’ zone defense didn’t force many turnovers but did do a good job of limiting shot attempts from...
Yannik Kruetter finished off Tuesday night’s decisive fourth quarter with an emphatic dunk, and Wyatt Parker erupted for a season-high 35 points as the Mules rolled to a 72-56 victory over the visiting Mossyrock Vikings. The Mules played at a fast, energetic pace that had been lacking the past few games but led by just two points going into the final frame. However, the fourth quarter turned into one of the Mules’ best of the year as they wrapped up the game on a 25-11 run. Chris Bilgic went a perfect 6 for 6 from the field for 14 points whi...
Last Wednesday night’s game against the Pe Ell Trojans was one that Coach Bill Olsen and his staff hope was just a fluke, a one-time occurrence resulting from the absence of senior and leading scorer Wyatt Parker (out - coach’s decision). Despite pulling out a 60-46 victory over the Trojans, the Mules turned in their worst performance of the 2011/2012 season with 19 turnovers, most unforced. The Mules’ inside game pulled off one of its best performances of the year, however, with Brett Chaput netting a season-high 19 points and Yannik Kruet...
The Mules displayed one of their best all-around performances of the year last Wednesday night in their 64-32 rout of the Napavine Tigers. The Mules held the Tigers scoreless for the first five minutes of the game. The Mule defense never let up and forced a number of turnovers that led to easy transitional scores while making it difficult for the Tigers to get anything going on offense. The Mule offense was just the opposite as they were firing on all cylinders, hitting 50 percent of their two-point tries, 75 percent from the line and 10 of 29...
The Mules defense played long and hard enough on Tuesday night to keep the team in the game until the offense decided to come out of its shell in the second half of a 66-49 victory over the visiting Kalama Chinooks. The Mules forced the Chinooks into 18 turnovers as they came away with 15 steals, six of those from sophomore Chris Bilgic. The Mule offense struggled to get going in the first half as they trailed 27-24 going into the break but came out from the half and posted a 23-point third quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beating three-pointer...
The Mules suffered their first loss of the young season last Friday night, taking the fourth-ranked Adna Pirates to the wire before succumbing to a 56-51 defeat. The two teams matched up well on paper, and it showed as neither team was able to build and sustain a lead in a back-and-forth game that was tied at the half and had the Mules leading after the first and third quarters by a point. With three minutes to go in the final frame, the Pirates managed to overtake the Mules and build what seemed to be an insurmountable lead at the time of six...
The Wahkiakum Mules opened up their 2011-2012 basketball season Saturday night with a 33-point win over their KM Mountain rivals, the Naselle Comets. The Mules dominated the entire game both offensively and defensively enroute to a 66-33 win over the visiting Comets. Leading the way for the Mules were seniors John Chambers and Wyatt Parker, with 20 and 17 points respectively. Sophomore Chris Bilgic added eight points and four steals to lead an aggressive half court trapping defense that had the Comets turning the ball over and tossing up...
In a season that has been a tough one to swallow for the Lady Mules softball team, things didn’t get a whole lot better over the past two weeks. Interspersed amongst the relentless periods of rain, the Lady Mules fell victim to defeat a total of seven times dating back to April 18, including a trio of double-headers. In the most recent action, the Lady Mules played host to the Timberwolves of Morton-White Pass last Friday evening. Despite MWP’s slow starts in both games, the Lady Mules ended up dropping the opener 15-0 and the nightcap 16-...
In a pair of tough-fought games the Mules found themselves on the short end of the stick here last Friday night against the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves, falling 8-4 in game one and 6-3 in game two. Ben Miles took the hill in the opener for the 4-8 Mules while Brandon Fudge toed the rubber in the nightcap. Lars Blix found his stroke as he swung the bat well against the Timberwolves, collecting three hits in game one and two more in game two. Eight days earlier, things didn’t fare much better for the Mules while on the road at Adna, losing the...
The Mules took advantage of smart base running and numerous Comet errors as they sent the Comets packing with a 15-1 defeat last Friday in Cathlamet. Defense was a chore for the Comets as they committed eight errors that led to many of the Mules’ runs. However, the Mules did their part at the plate as well, tallying 12 hits and swiping a ridiculous 17 bases. The Mules also took advantage of five walks and three hit batters. Brandon Fudge led the charge offensively, going three for four with a double, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and...
A strong second-half comeback wasn’t enough to keep the Wahkiakum Mules’ season alive as they fell 59-54 to the Pe Ell Trojans last Friday night in the Class 2B boys basketball tournament at Rochester High School. Things looked grim early on for the Mules after a tough-luck first half in which nothing seemed to fall through the nets, putting the team in a 13-point hole at the break. The second half was a whole different story. The Mules came storming back to tie the game at 46-46 less than two minutes into the final frame. The Trojans hit som...
The Wahkiakum Mules came up just short last Thursday night against the Toutle Lake Ducks in Castle Rock, suffering a 50-49 defeat. The last second finish didn’t come without much controversy though, as an apparent blown call on an offensive rebound by Brett Chaput left those who saw the play in complete shock, myself included. With only 2.6 seconds remaining and the Mules trailing by two, Wyatt Parker pulled in a rebound on the defensive end and was fouled in the process. Parker stepped up to the free throw line to shoot a one-and-one with t...
The Naselle Comette defense was too much for the Wahkiakum Lady Mules as Naselle won a 49-29 2B Girls District Tournament basketball team Tuesday in Rochester. The Mules had a tough time advancing the ball down the court against the Comets full-court pressure and open looks from the field were few and far between. The Mules mustered only 29 points on eight of 55 shooting from the field and 11 for 29 from the free throw line. The loss ends the Lady Mules' season. The Comettes had a much better night, shooting 38 percent as they rolled to a...
It was a tough week for Wahkiakum Mule players, coaches, and fans alike as the team dropped two road games and one at home, pushing their season-high losing streak to five games. Last Thursday the Mules hosted the Napavine Tigers and much like their entire season has gone, the offense failed to gain any momentum early, scoring just 21 points through the first three quarters before finding a rhythm in the fourth that netted 16 points for a disappointing 65-37 loss. Wyatt Parker was the lone Mule in double-figures with 16 points to go along with...
