  • Gulls knock Mule boys out of districts

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 19, 2014

Wahkiakum fans were left speechless Monday night in Rochester as the Mules’ season came to an abrupt end after a dreadful 41-38 loss to Pacific League foe Raymond. The Mules entered the game as the clear favorites over the Pacific’s fourth place finishers, despite finishing the regular season as the sixth seed from the Central League. Unfortunately, being the better team on paper means nothing once the game begins, a fact that played out in gruesome fashion against the Seagulls. A multitude of turnovers and missed shots from near point bla...

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team capped their snow-shortened regular season Monday night with a convincing 54-39 win over the Toutle Lake Ducks on Senior Night in Cathlamet. The Mules and Ducks traded buckets back and forth in the opening few minutes. After taking a 20-13 lead after the first quarter and a 29-24 lead into halftime, the Mules came out with cranked up intensity and dominated the Ducks in a 16-3 third quarter to put the game away. Shane Souvenir led the Mules at both ends of the floor, narrowly missing a triple-double as...

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team came from behind to topple league foe Onalaska last Wednesday night, beating the third-placed Loggers 50-44. The Mules entered the final quarter trailing by four points but they came out and hit three triples and went a perfect 8 for 8 from the line down the stretch to outscore the Loggers 17-7. Shane Souvenir spearheaded the Mules’ offense with 22 points and corralled a team high seven rebounds. Souvenir also blocked six Onalaska shots. Seth Doumit c...

The Wahkiakum Mules came out red hot against Napavine last Wednesday night when they hosted the Tigers in a Central 2B League matchup, netting 22 points while converting on five three pointers in the opening quarter. Unfortunately, the Mules managed just 23 points over the final three quarters as they fell 46-45 to the Tigers. Despite scoring only eight points in the second quarter, the Mules went into the break clinging to a narrow 30-25 lead. After halftime, the Mules came out in the third quarter and nearly dropped a goose egg, going...

  • Mules halt slide with win over Winlock

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 22, 2014

Shane Souvenir and Austin Good led the Mules past a sluggish start to a much needed league victory last Friday night when they edged the struggling Cardinals 49-42 at Winlock. The duo combined for 34 points (19 and 15, respectively) as the win pushed the Mules to 8-5 overall (4-5 in league play) and dropped Winlock to a league-worst 0-9 (1-12 overall). Brandon Budd added seven points, Travis Wegdahl netted six, and Seth Doumit scored two points. The Mules hosted Napavine Wednesday night and hit the road this weekend to visit Pe Ell on Friday...

  • Mules hit slide, drop three straight

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 15, 2014

The Mules have hit a bump in the road this season after coming up short in all three of their games this past week. The team’s troubles began last Thursday night against the Mossyrock Vikings. After taking a 17-point lead into the half, 39-22, the Mules imploded in the third quarter, giving up a season-worst 29 points in the third quarter alone while managing just 11 points of their own. A tough fourth quarter saw the game deadlocked at 69 at the end of regulation, but in the extra frame the Mules could muster only a mere three points to M...

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 8, 2014

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team stormed through their opponents in the annual Dayton Christmas tourney that also marked the return to action of senior shooting guard Seth Doumit. The Mules opened the tournament with a 68-38 victory over the Elgin Huskies, a 2A school from Northeast Oregon, before routing the Lacrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus Tigercats in the championship game, 88-49. The Mules used a strong surge in the second and third quarters against Elgin to put the game out of reach, outscoring the Huskies 44-16 over that stretch....

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 18, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team kicked off the new season this past week with a busy schedule, tallying wins over fellow Central 2B League members Napavine, Winlock, and Pe Ell, and a non-league victory against South Bend. Coming off a third place finish at the state championships last year, this year’s Mule squad is eager to earn a repeat trip to Spokane, despite returning only two starters from last year’s team. Led by the 6’3” senior workhorse Shane Souvenir, the 2013/2014 Mules feature a vastly different offensive approach from Mu...

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 2, 2013

The Wahkiaum Mules’ baseball season virtually came to an end this past week as the Mules dropped a pair of road games at Morton-White Pass and were swept at home by Toutle Lake. Last Thursday, the Mules hit the road to take on the Timberwolves and lost 9-8 in an offensive battle in the opener before falling 2-0 in a pitching duel of a nightcap. Lars Blix absorbed the loss in game one, going the distance while allowing five earned runs and striking out four. Offensively, Travis Wegdahl set the table out of the leadoff slot for the Mules, g...

  • Tigers sweep Mules in baseball action

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 25, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team struggled to get the bats going last Wednesday night against Napavine, falling 7-0 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 13-2. The Mules tallied just four hits in the opener, two from Lars Blix and one apiece from Dallas Peacock and Gunnar Blix. Things got a little better offensively for the Mules in the second game, notably Gunnar Blix’s pair of hits, including a home run. Peacock, Lars Blix, Travis Wegdahl, and Mason Mackey all picked up singles in the losing effort. The losses dropped the Mules to 5-5 i...

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 4, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mules brothers Lars and Gunnar Blix combined to stifle the visiting Adna Pirates last Thursday in a pair of Central 2B League games, winning the opener 6-2 before taking the nightcap 4-0. The Pirates jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring both of their runs in the first inning of game one on five base hits. That proved to be as much damage as the Pirates would do, however, as the Blix Brothers collectively allowed just three hits over the final 13 innings. At the plate, Lars Blix...

The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team split a double-header with Mossyrock this past week, losing the opener 11-1 in six innings on Friday and winning game two 4-2, with four innings played Friday night and the remaining 2 ½ innings Monday evening. In the opener, Steven Doumit reached base on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning, stole third base and eventually scored the Mules’ lone run. Gunnar Blix recorded the Mules’ only hit, also in the fifth inning, and stole one base. Dallas Peacock walked in all three plate appearances. Pea...

  • Mules place third in state tournament

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 7, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team capped off their rollercoaster season with a third place finish at last week’s state tournament in Spokane, ending the year on a high note. The Mules reached the semifinals after a gritty 62-49 win over Winlock in the fifth meeting between the teams this season. Eager to put their struggles against Winlock behind them, the Mules hoped to jump on the Cardinals early and finish them off with ease. That proved to be too much to ask for though, as it was Winlock that got off to a hot start, putting the M...

  • Mules pound Liberty Bell, head to state

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 28, 2013

For those fans that made the nine hour roundtrip journey to Sunnyside this past Saturday to watch the Wahkiakum Mules take on the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions in a loser-out, winner-to-state regional game, they were rewarded with a 63-36 Mule thrashing of the Mountain Lions in a relatively short-lived game. In a game that lasted less than an hour’s time, the Mules exerted their dominance over their North Central Washington adversaries, jumping out to a 19-8 first quarter lead en route to the 63-36 victory. Comparable to how the Mules finished ou...

  • Mules place 3rd, head to regionals

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 21, 2013

The Mules will be heading to central Washington this weekend as they clinched a berth to regionals with four wins this past week. Facing elimination following their second loss of the season to seventh-seeded Winlock, the third-seeded Mules found themselves in a loser-out matchup against the top-seeded Pacific League champions, the Raymond Seagulls. The Mules, however, quickly silenced any fears of a two-and-out appearance as they jumped on the Gulls early, racing to a 20-8 first quarter lead, and never looking back for a 69-33 win. Senior...

  • Cards upset Mules at District

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 14, 2013

Seniors Peter Weiler and Lars Blix combined for 39 of the Mules’ 52 points last Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the upset minded Winlock Cardinals in the opening round of district play, with the Mules falling 57-52. The third-seeded Mules and seventh-seeded Cardinals were neck and neck throughout much of the game, with neither team able to break open a commanding lead. In the decisive fourth quarter, the Mules were clinging to a narrow four point lead when an unfortunate call turned the tide of the game. After a Winlock fou...

  • Mule boys team stops three straight opponents

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 7, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team finished the regular season on a strong note this past week, posting wins against Mossyrock, Toutle, and Adna to secure their position in districts as the third seed from the Central League. The Mules began the week last Wednesday against a resilient Mossyrock team that matched the Mules bucket-for-bucket for most of the game. Despite being in the midst of their best shooting performance of the entire season, the Vikings hung around to keep things interesting before succumbing to a 74-65 defeat. While...

  • Mules fall to Loggers

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 31, 2013

For the second time this season the Mules came up three points short against eighth-ranked Onalaska, falling 45-42 to the Loggers. Slow starts have plagued the Mules throughout the season, and it continued again last Wednesday, as the Mules fell behind early, spotting Onalaska a 15-6 lead after one quarter of play. The Mules converted only two of nine attempts from the field in the opening frame, a pair of three-pointers from Lars Blix, whose game-high 23 points just weren’t enough to carry the Mules past the Loggers. Quarters two and three w...

  • Mules slide past Tigers, Trojans

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 24, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team took a small step in the right direction this past week following back-to-back home upsets the week prior as the team buckled down to pick up a pair of league victories on the road. Last Wednesday, the Mules travelled to Napavine to face a struggling Tigers team, but it was the Mules who did a lot of the struggling early. After one quarter of play, the Mules were still stuck with a goose egg on the scoreboard, trailing 13-0 to the Tigers. Over the next three quarters, though, the Mules finally got into a...

  • Cards, Comets corral cold shooting Mules

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 17, 2013

Wahkiakum fans were left utterly stunned this week after the Mules were upset in back-to-back home games by Winlock and Naselle, falling 54-41 to the Cardinals on Friday and 51-47 to the Comets on Monday. The losses dropped the Mules to 6-3 in league play and 9-4 overall for the season. The Mules trailed 10-8 after one quarter of play against Winlock, but fought back to take a 26-18 lead into the break. After sinking a couple baskets to extend their lead early in the third quarter, things came apart for the Mules. They were outscored by the...

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 10, 2013

Following back-to-back losses to Morton-White Pass and Onalaska in mid-December, the Mules have won six straight games and closed out the first half of the season on a strong note. The recent surge began just before Christmas when the Mules went onto the road and handily beat a less-than-stellar South Bend team 73-24. Lars Blix and Shane Souvenir sparked the Mules offense with 19 and 18 points, respectively, with Seth Doumit and Eli McElroy each tacking on 11 points. Steven Doumit added five points, Travis Wegdahl four, Brandon Budd three and D...

The Timberwolves jumped on the Mules early, taking a 16-7 lead after one quarter and never looking back enroute to a 70-44 pounding of the visiting Mules last Thursday night. Shane Souvenir led the Mules in scoring with 12 points, followed by Eli McElroy with nine, Travis Wegdahl seven, Lars Blix six, Seth Doumit four, Gunnar Blix three, and Steven Doumit one. • Mule boys beat Tigers, Trojans

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 13, 2012

The Mules moved to 3-0 on the young season with home victories over a pair of league foes in the past week, outlasting the Napavine Tigers 49-37 last Thursday and pummeling the Pe Ell Trojans 75-38 on Tuesday. The Mules got off to a slow start against the Trojans Tuesday night, failing to convert on numerous open looks, but still managed to take a 26-17 advantage into the break. The second half was an entirely different story. Behind the strength of a 25-5 dominating effort in the third quarter, the Mules outscored the Trojans 49-21 in the...

  • Mule boys survive scare on the road

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 6, 2012

The Wahkiakum Mules opened the 2012/13 basketball season with a narrow 63-58 victory Tuesday night over the perennial bottom-dwelling Winlock Cardinals, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to nip the home team. After leading by as many as 18 and dominating much of the first half of the game, foul trouble sent two Mule regulars to the bench and the Cardinals managed to fight back from a 30-12 deficit to within three points at the break, trailing 32-29. Wahkiakum extended their lead to five after three quarters, but not long into the final...
