    At the last Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 monthly meeting, the winners of the 2024 Post Raffle were drawn. Jane Kelsy of Rosburg won a Quilt, Carol Wegdahl of Cathlamet won a Sling Shot Rifle, Sulema Zerr of Puget Island won a Camp Box and Rose Long of Long Beach won a Hunting Bow. We anticipate having another raffle this year beginning in May and will be offering a Marlin 45-70 cal., model #1894G, lever action rifle. Our Post very much appreciates the support from the community with the raffle and donations during 2024....

    On Saturday, January 4th at the Cowlitz Valley VFW Post 1045 in Longview, Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 presented certificates and cash awards to winners of the 2024-2025 Youth Essay (grades 3-5), Patriots Pen (grades 6-8), and Voice of Democracy (grades 9-12) essay contests.     The Wahkiakum Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5297 operates in Cathlamet. Currently there are 62 members in the Post with 273 veterans listed in Wahkiakum County. We believe there are many more veterans living within Wahkiakum County but have not contacted us, and we would like to hear from you. Our Post seeks donations to help local veterans and their families in need, to contribute to local causes, and to recognize and make cash awards to local students and first responders. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cathlamet Fire Hall, although our last 3 meetings were conducted by telephone conference call. Currently, there are 62 members in the Post.     On February 24, Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 hosted the VFW District 16 Youth Essay Awards at the J.A. Wendt Elementary School Multi-purpose Room. District 16 is comprised of nine posts based in Raymond, Longview, Centralia, Winlock, Long Beach, Mossyrock, Ryderwood, Toutle Valley, and Cathlamet.
