The Fairgrounds is ready for winter weather. Everything has been done to protect our Fair properties from the freezing temperatures that destroyed our pipes last year. There is a really distinct climate difference between Skamokawa and Cathlamet. Last week Skamokawa had temperatures in the teens and three inches of snow. I drove to Cathlamet and there wasn’t any snow or ice on the roads. Heading home, up the Skamokawa Valleys I drove back into a snow blizzard again! Neil Beerbower and Jerry Ledtke finally got all the T-building windows t...

This event has been organized by Fair Board members Martha and Cheryl Backman to raise funds to support the Wahkiakum County Fair for many years. Thank you Martha and Cheryl, you did a great job again! We had a mountain of raffle prizes donated to this event from friends and businesses. Mike Backman used my ticket spinner and about wore the handle off it making sure the tickets were mixed up good. He did a...

Each year the fair board has a big list of things to do before winter sets in. Some of our equipment is pressure washed and then stored on higher ground for the winter. With the help of Pete Ringen, Dean Seaberg and Larry Hendrickson, we were able to get some of our equipment moved last week. We would like to say thank you to these men for all their help to get this accomplished! The T-building windows grant project is moving right along. I think we have finished the hardest part of the project. Neil Beerbower and Jerry Ledtke had sawdust...
The arena surface received some serious attention last week! Neil Beerbower rototilled the whole arena (it took Neil over six hours) his goal is a uniform surface that is ideal for horse riding. We still need to add more dirt, sand and sawdust , then spend many hours driving tractor to get it just right. Before you ride, please spend a little time removing rocks from the arena. We have placed two big cans in the arena for riders to put the rocks into. If there is a 4-H club that could help remove the rocks please call me and we can pick a day...
The Wahkiakum County Fair Board will begin holding their meetings at the River Street Building Meeting Room in November. This building is located by the Wahkiakum PUD Building and our new meeting room is beside the WSU Extension Office. These meetings are attended by many people from the community and in our new location we will have plenty of chairs and be warm! Complete meeting details are at the end of this column. It’s time to start advertising for our next fund raising event. Martha and Cheryl Backman selected November 19 for Turkey B...

As I walked around the fairgrounds this year I noticed there were people I didn’t know at our Fair. We also gave out many new exhibitor numbers. These two observations made me suspect that we had more people attending our Fair this year. Patty Dursteler, the Fair Board Treasurer, had the attendance count at the last Fair Board meeting. We had a huge increase in attendance! The search is on, we are looking for fun and interesting entertainment for our 2011 Fair. Fair Entertainment Committee Chairman Jerry Ledtke and I traveled to the Sandy, O...
The Fair Board would like to congratulate Fair Manager Lore Twiet for the fine job she has done these last four months! As Fair manager, you work with the Fair Board, volunteers, hired help, vendors and Wahkiakum County employees to get things accomplished. The fair manager job is not an easy one, many times in the middle of a planned event, everything changes, and the manager has to keep her thoughts in order so she can immediately move in a new direction. Lore was very good at changing directions, and if she needed to consult with me (fair...
I hope that everyone had a chance to stop by and enjoy the 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair. We had a great line-up of entertainment each day. New fund raising events were held during this Fair and many volunteers showed up to help the Fair Board with them. We had lots of animal and still life exhibits brought in by friends and neighbors of our community. The weather was perfect (meaning no rain) it was a wonderful Fair! The Wapato Native American Dancers performing at the Salmon BBQ were incredible. The dancers added a live picture of a lost...
Every year the Fair Board and volunteers of our community work together toward achieving a common goal. The planning is all done now and it’s time to enjoy what we have worked so hard to keep a part of our community. It's opening day at our Wahkiakum County Fair! Time to visit with friends, view entertainment, eat lots of delicious foods, and take a look at all the improvements that have been made to the fairgrounds. The Fair Board selects a special person to dedicate the Fair to each year. Nancy Corbin received this honor. Nancy has a long h...
The second Silver Buckle Series Open Game Show was a well attended event last Saturday at the fairgrounds. There were 24 horses and riders that participated in the timed events. We had competitors from Vancouver, Castle Rock, Kelso, Longview, Woodland, Naselle, Rosburg, Cathlamet and Skamokawa. We gave out some great prizes Saturday to the high point winners in each age group thanks to the generous donations of horse equipment and supplies we received from Watkins Tractor & Supply Company in Kelso, Terri Slape, Western World Inc. in Longview,...
Cassie Bolton and Akaysha Stonebreaker are the 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair Princesses. You may have already met and talked with them at Bald Eagle Days, as both girls were busy representing the Fair and selling pre-season Fair passes. The passes will get you into the Fair all three days and if you purchase them now from one of the princesses they are only $6. Cassie and Akaysha are also selling raffle tickets. This $1 ticket goes into our ticket tumbler and you have a chance to win the awesome prizes we have for this raffle. The grand prize is...
The Fairgrounds was a busy place last weekend. We had horses in the arena, dogs and cats in the T-building, bargain shoppers in the Youth Building and a concrete pad poured for the exotic barn. The Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic was a huge success. Dr. Lisa Bartel had 52 animals brought to her clinic in the T-building! There is one more clinic scheduled for August 7, if you have some questions about the clinic and your animal, call Dr. Bartel at 1-360-484-7228. The Rummage Sale has been very successful at turning donated items into dollars...
Fair Count Down Alert! Only six more weeks until Fair! When you go to the fairgrounds and pick up exhibitor tags and cards in the next few weeks, be sure to take a look at all the activities that are going on. We have some volunteers that are spending many hours pulling weeds, planting boxwood bushes, planting flowers and generally working on landscaping the fairgrounds. We can thank Jean Beerbower, Patty Dursteler, James Daniels, Sarah Czarnecki, and Jesse Aargon for keeping after this project. It’s looking great, no easy task with all the r...
July has arrived and that means only seven weeks till fair! Fair Manager Lore Twiet is currently working on sending contracts out to craft and food vendors. If you would like to be a vendor at the fair now would be a good time to give her a call. We have some building projects to do in July and could use your help. Please call the office and have your name and phone number added to our volunteer list. We will call you when the project is ready to start. Volunteering is a good way to meet people if you are new to our area! I enjoy writing this...
The first show of the “Silver Buckle Series” was held last Saturday, it was a fun and successful event. Stewart Moonen sounded like a professional announcer as he called the classes into the arena to compete and later announced the winners. For setting up the barrels and poles our crew was: Ginger Moonen, Debbie Twiet, Joni Matthews, Connie Luthi and Kathy Perkins. Their job was to measure out the correct number of feet between the poles or barrels and set them in place. They were quick with a rake between the contestants to keep the dirt smo...
The Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds will be covered with fancy cars and lots of people, as the Dollars for Scholars event is this Saturday. Some lucky fishermen will bring in big prehistoric looking sturgeon to be weighed and measured for the Sturgeon Derby. There will be lots of raffle prize drawings and good food. Stop by and support this fund-raiser that provides scholarships for the Naselle and Wahkiakum High School graduating seniors, see you there! We will be having another work party today (Thursday), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fairgrounds to...
Smashed and flattened! It was a mighty wind storm that knocked over the big cottonwood tree at the fairgrounds. We were lucky it fell where it did, it missed the cyclone fence and fell away from the restroom building. Sadly, the two balloon toss little buildings are history. Looks like another project for Jeff! Some good things are happening too. Handyman Jeff Beerbower has built new steps and put new railings on the mini-stage. This is very important to entertainment committee chairman Jerry Ledtke, as he is planning to hire a country rock...
The Fair & 4-H Rummage Sale was a busy place last Saturday! I watched many happy people carry their “found” treasures out the door. We thank the many people that donated their items to this fund raiser. We will hold another sale in June, the date to be determined. One of the best surprises last week was when Julie Johnston showed up at the fairgrounds with the Elochoman Valley Partners! They came with their weed eaters and gardening tools, and were ready to work. They worked their equipment around the many buildings and then headed out to wor...
Here we go again! Rummage sale time! This Saturday (May 15), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. New items have been donated and we are selling them at bargain prices. Come visit with your neighbors and you may get the opportunity to talk to county commissioner Blair Brady, as he usually shows up at our fund raisers that support the fair. As we prepare for our 2010 Fair a lot of time is spent making decisions by the Fair Board. I thought you might be interested to know who these people are, and what they do to...
It’s time for our next Fair and 4-H Rummage Sale! The date of the rummage sale is May 15 (Saturday) and we will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you didn’t get a chance to donate items to our first sale, here’s another chance. We already have tables covered with books, collectables, cute cookie jars, small kitchen appliances, Christmas items and Easter items plus a small sofa, exercise equipment, clothing, tables, desks, a microwave, picture frames and all kinds of little and big odds and ends. If you have something to donate to our colle...
Are you starting to feel like the cold rainy weather is leaving? When that feeling takes hold, we all start to wander outside more, and start thinking maybe it’s time for a little physical exercise. It’s always more fun if you have a goal in mind. How about competing in the Great White Tail Run? If you start walking and slow jogging now, by the time May 15 gets here, you will be ready to join the many locals and out of county people who enjoy the Great White Tail Run. I will share more details about this 4-H event in my future columns. We hav...
The weather was perfect, we had good signs to direct people, and flyers advertising the Fair & 4-H Rummage Sale posted all over the county. This and the fact we all love a big rummage sale, made for a very successful one. We thank our community for the wonderful items that they donated! The youth building was full of these treasures and we sold them at affordable prices. It was like going back 10 years in time, when the fair rummage sale was a part of our summers. It was a social gathering for all who came to shop, a place to spend a few...
We are still collecting items this week for the April 10-11 4-H and Fair Rummage Sale. The tables in the youth building at the fairgrounds are getting covered with good, useable items. We have a very nice love seat, books, clothing, glassware, desks and lots of other treasures! Need to plant a couple acres of bare ground or plant a property boundary line? We have Douglas Fir trees, 120 trees to a bag, ready to plant, rainy weather is perfect for planting these nice trees. The sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday....
