A noisy delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange Hall last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner is the Fair Board’s biggest fundraising event each year. A hard working group of volunteers planned and staffed this big event and did a fantastic job! The dinner preparation took many hours and then five excellent waitresses worked quickly to get the food hot off the barbeque and stoves out to our guests. Thank-you Sharyl I...

My project for the Wahkiakum County Fair this week was shifting through a big pile of paperwork. It is time to turn in the application for state funding for our fair. Every exhibitor that participated in our 2012 Fair is counted and all exhibitor entries per class are added up. Next a detailed breakdown of the exhibitors; a total of 4-H, Open Youth, FFA or open Adult exhibitors, plus were the exhibitors from our home county or exhibitors from other counties. The next section asks for Capital Improvement projects that...
The Wahkiakum County Fair is only seven months away! Fair Board committees are starting to meet and discuss new ideas to help promote, fundraise for and advertise our Fair. The Royalty Program committee met last week to look over a new program. The rules, responsibilities and funds raised are all topics that are being looked into. The new program is still in a rough draft form, the committee is pooling ideas and as soon as we have a detailed program we look forward to advertising for participants. Keep reading this column for the latest...
The volunteer positions for the Wahkiakum County Fair Board have been filled! We welcome to the board Kathy Durrah and Jason Rainey. We have a full board again and lots of fundraising to do this year! In February we host a Valentine Dinner, March is Easter Bingo time and for April I am preparing the paper work to schedule a Centered Riding Clinic. All these fundraising ideas provide opportunities for our community to meet and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Hope you will plan on attending all our fundraising events as we...
We have in our approved Wahkiakum County Fair budget for 2013, $13,500 to pay out to adult and youth exhibitors. Adults will be receiving the same dollar per point as youth exhibitors again. The premium point payment has been reinstated in our budget for Adults, spread the word! With the above good news circulating around our community, a question was asked; “How about purchasing ribbons for the adult exhibitors instead of using stickers?” To buy these ribbons we will need to ask for donations from our community, as we didn’t plan the extra...
Working outside in this cold weather isn’t much fun, yet wintertime projects at the Fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our projects is to fix all the little problems some of our buildings have acquired over the years. The horse barn gutters had come loose, sending rain water cascading down the siding and the resulting pools of water were flowing into some horse stalls. Bill Chamberlain and Ed Stevens worked together to put those gutters back to doing their job! They also noticed that the metal roof, probably because of t...
5 has been a very busy year with a long list of projects completed by a wonderful crew of volunteers and employees. I look forward to the new projects planned for completion in 2013 and wish everyone in our community a Happy New Year! If you would like to help plan the 2013 Fair, now is a good time to become a Fair Board member, pick up an application at the Wahkiakum County Commissioners office or call 795-8048 for more information. The Fair board meets monthly, meetings last up to 1 1/2 hours. Your interest and expertise are needed! If...
Last week, the Wahkiakum County Fair Board elected new officers. Taking office in 2013: President Bill Chamberlain, Vice-President Phil Vik, Treasurer Rick Damitio, Secretary Maureen Zacker-Bockius. Congratulations to all and I look forward to another productive year at the Fairgrounds. Thanks for stopping by the rummage and book sale last Saturday. It was so cold in the T-building that some nice folks made a donation towards the purchase of a heater for me to stand by. I must admit I got very cold at our five hour sale! The next rummage...
The bright colored lights decorating the fairgrounds and Skamokawa Grange Hall were beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the huge crowd of people attending had a great time. Last weekend’s Skamokawa Grange and Fire Department dinner was a success, hope you attended. Special thanks to Ed Stevens for decorating the fairgrounds and surrounding neighborhood with a multitude of sparkling Christmas lights. It’s time to open up the rummage and book sale! We have received many generous donations of reusable items; a mic...
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause severe flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to help me watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. By Monday afternoon the winds were increasing and the rain was pouring down and blowing sideways because of the high winds. We decided it was time to move...
The Wahkiakum County Fair Board would like to say thank you to the many bingo players who attended Turkey Bingo last Friday night. The winning card holders received a big turkey or a ham for their bingo. During one game, there were four bingos at the same time and Mike Backman, our number caller, had to call a bingo run-off to determine the winner. Now that’s intense bingo! We also had two games of black-out bingo; the winners were Samantha Wright and Kim Hedges. They both received a complete dinner plus a turkey. I suspect there will be some d...
Attention all bingo players! On November 16, at 6 p.m., the Wahkiakum County Fair Board’s Turkey Bingo, held at the J. A. Wendt multi-purpose room, will begin! There will be two fund raising raffle drawings at the event. One raffle drawing is for multiple prizes and the grand prize raffle is for a Sears barbecue. Tickets are only $1 each for both drawings. Bingo cards are three for $10. Every bingo winner will receive a turkey or a ham for their prize. You can also purchase some delicious goodies from the kitchen to enjoy during the bingo. T...
The Washington State Fairs Convention held in Yakima was a great place to share ideas with fair managers and fair board members. I spent three days attending fair workshops and meeting numerous talented entertainers and am bringing home stacks of information to share with our fair board. While at the convention, I entered our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair poster into the poster contest and it won first place! We competed with fairs who have under 9,000 people in attendance to receive a big beautiful blue and black first place ribbon....
The Two Island Farmers Market was a great place to sell the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's last packages of smoked Salmon last Friday. We completely sold out and the fund raiser was a success. Thanks again to Art Pedersen, Mike Clark of C&H Classic Smoked Fish, E&E Seafoods and the Two Islands Farmers Market for helping make this fund raising project possible. Our next fund raising raffle will be for a cord of alder firewood. We will be selling $1 raffle tickets at every Wahkiakum County Fair Board event. The alder firewood was cut recently and...
Even as the rains pour down the admission ticket booth continues to be a work in progress each day at the fairgrounds. Ben Vasion and his crew are working each night after school to complete an Eagle Scout project. With the old ticket booth removed, the crew went right to work on the foundation of the new booth. They are using pressure treated beams to support the floor. First they drilled into the concrete and added bolts that connect the concrete to the beams. Next the flooring was screwed down onto the beams. The wall structures were framed...
The weather was very wet and rainy last Saturday, but that did not stop Boy Scout Troop #883 from meeting at the fairgrounds to start an Eagle Scout project. Scout Ben Vasion needed to complete a project and asked me for project ideas a few weeks ago. We discussed a few projects, then Ben decided he would like to tear down the admission gate ticket booth and build a new one. The ticket booth had a rotten floor, the walls were in bad shape and this project needed to be completed before we could safely use the booth again. Looking over the...
Fair Premium checks are in the mail and will be delivered to your mail box in the next few days. Please cash your check as soon as you receive it! All checks need to be cashed by November 10. We are always looking for new ways to bring in funding to support our Fair. We have a new Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raiser. We are selling delicious smoked sockeye salmon. After our fair time salmon barbecue we had a few fillets left, Commissioner Blair Brady suggested we get the salmon smoked and packaged ready to sell. The salmon was smoked at...
Fair Premium checks will be issued this week and delivered to your mail box soon. Please cash your check as soon as you receive it! Missing some eye glasses? Could you have left them at the fairgrounds during Fair time? As we were straightening up the Fairgrounds buildings we have collected three pairs of eye glasses. Please call the fairgrounds if you think a pair might be yours. Naidie Everdell wanted a few special prizes to be awarded along with the ribbons exhibitors received this year in the Cavy and Exotic Barn. After consulting with me,...
Many people attended the Wahkiakum County Fair this year, but on the last day, people came from our county and beyond to stand in line and be served a plate of barbecued Alaskan caught salmon. We enjoy preparing this delicious dinner for our fair visitors and are happy to see our community support this important fund raiser for the fair. This dinner was possible because of the generosity of Art Pedersen and E&E Foods. Art caught the salmon in Alaska, then delivered the fish to be processed to E&E Foods. Art donated the salmon, E&E Foods donated...
Visitors and friends attending the fair had a wonderful group of people to welcome them through our Wahkiakum County Fair gates. Our admission booths were staffed with some of the nicest people from our local area. I heard some comments back about being a ticket taker last August and they were all good! Maybe it was the little bag of treats Valle or Azery took to the workers about half way through their shifts. Maybe it was knowing they were needed and a big part of helping with fair time volunteer activities. We cannot thank them enough for...
My adding machine has been working overtime this week as I total up the points on the exhibitor cards for our Youth Exhibitors. The 4-H, Open Youth and FFA exhibitors were very busy creating items to enter into the Fair! The Youth building was filled up with their wonderful exhibits! In the Youth Still Life Departments, Crafts and Hobbies received the highest number of entries with 674 items entered, that’s a lot of crafts. Educational posters had the next highest amount of entries. Our young exhibitors put lots of time and effort into their p...
How many people attended our Fair this year? After totaling all the figures, we had 3,524 people come through our gates! Hope you enjoyed the entertainment, livestock shows, good food and visiting with friends each day. See you at the 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair! Did you notice the beautiful roses we have growing in our flower beds during the fair? These roses were selected by Georgie Billings for their beauty and ability to continue to survive in our rainy area. She also loaned the fair many potted plants and placed them around the fairgrounds...
