Lure coursing event to be held this weekend

There will be a three day sight-hound lure coursing trial this weekend at Misty Rivers Plantation, 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island. This is an AKC sanctioned event in which the dogs compete by chasing an artificial bunny around a 10 acre field. It is sponsored by the Willamette Valley Basenji Club, and the Friday afternoon session will be a competition for basenjis only, plus qualifying runs for other sight hound breeds.

On Saturday and Sunday, festivities start at 8 a.m., and will feature more qualifying runs followed by an all-breed competition which will run until completion, usually mid to late afternoon. Dogs will run in groups of three, competing with others of their own breed, and each day ends with the best of each breed racing against each other for the Best In Field award.

The event is free, and open to the public. Well leashed dogs are also invited. Spectator parking is on the lawn in front. Handicapped parking and restrooms are available on the playing field in back.
