Buzzards Breath chili cook off set for Labor Day

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is seeking cooks to take part in the Eighth Annual Labor Day “Buzzards Breath” Chili Cook Off in Cathlamet, on September 3.

As well as the cook off and tasting there will be a tortilla throwing contest, live music, a beer garden, a rubber duckie race raffle, a cow plop raffle and a wooden boat raffle.

Cooking starts at 10 a.m. and the public will start tasting at 1 p.m. with judging at 3 p.m.The event will be held at the Elochoman Slough Marina and there is no cost to enter. Cathlamet library to open Fridays

Cathlamet Library will be open from 2-5 p.m. on Fridays, starting August 19.

Friday hours will be offered on a trial basis through December; at the end of the year the experiment will be evaluated, based on customer usage as well as volunteer staffing levels, to determine whether or not to extend the additional hours into 2012. A successful trial adding Saturday hours was done in 2009.

The library, located above the town hall at 100 Main Street, is also open Monday 1-4 p.m., Tuesday 2-5 p.m., Wednesday 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday 1-4 p.m. and Saturday 1-4 p.m. For questions and additional information call the library at 795-3254 or email connielib@centurytel.net.

Museum seeks fair booth volunteers

The Wahkiakum County Historical Museum will be open on August 18 and 19 during fair week from 1-4 p.m.

The museum is also seeking volunteers at their fair booth; those interested should call curator Kari Kandoll at 849-4353 to schedule times. The booth will have a list of those who need to renew their memberships, which helps keep costs down.

Literary fête to raise funds for library

The Blanche Bradley Memorial Library Foundation will have its annual fund raiser for the Cathlamet City Library on August 27 from 6-8 p.m.

The Literary Fête will be held at the Stockhouse Farm at 59 W. Birnie Slough Road on Puget Island. Area author Cathy Turgeon will share ideas on literary endeavors and Fred Carter will provide the music on his acoustic guitar. Appetizers and wine will be served. Proceeds from the ticket sales benefit the foundation and support the Cathlamet City Library.

Ticket price is $25 per person and can be obtained by calling Hilary at 360-355-5517 or Cheryl at 360-431- 7120. Tickets can also be picked up at Bank of the Pacific or Cathlamet Realty West.

Timberland Library releases calendar

Timberland Regional Libraries have released their calendar for August and September.

Events happening at the Naselle branch of the library include

August 21--Page Turners Book Discussion: The Tiger: a True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant, 10 a.m. to noon, for adults and teens.

September 5--All Timberland libraries closed for Labor Day.

September 18--Page Turners Book Discussion: To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild, 10 a.m. to noon, for adults and teens.

September 21--All Timberland libraries closed for annual all staff training day.

September 28--The Timberland Regional Library Board of Trustees will have a public meeting at 7 p.m. at the Elma Timberland Library.

Mule football practice starts midnight, Aug. 17

Mule football practice will start August 17 at midnight. All participants must have a physical and obtain proof of insurance prior to first practice.

A parent meeting will be held 7 p.m. on August 16 in the High School cafeteria.
